First Class Clerks 1856-70
This grade was created in 1856. The number of First Class Clerks was then fixed at ten. It was reduced to nine in 1857, to eight in 1859 and to seven in 1861. A supernumerary First Class Clerk was appointed in 1866, the number returning to seven in 1868. (fn. 1) The salary scale attached to the grade in 1856 was £700 rising by annual increments of £25 to £900. (fn. 2)
