Matthew de Bremesfeld le Messer ... and says that he (John) was 4 years old when he was contracted with Aubrey de Caumvill at Arewe, who was about 4 or 5 years old, and in the same year the juror's father died, but he does not know how much time has elapsed: he often heard the said John declaiming against the marriage and chiefly when he was of man's discretion, and never saw them together after they were 12 or 14 years old, nor did he ever exhibit her in any of his manors.
John de Rochamton, examined at the instance of the bailiffs of John Giffard, of Rochamton, said that he was of free condition, and a tenant by charter, that the said John was 26 years old, which he believes because a neighbour of his had a son born in the same year, whom he lifted from the sacred font: he often heard the said John declaiming against the said marriage and especially in the hall of Roc[hamton] ... before those lying round, that no one of the race of Le Longespey would adhere to any wife to whom he happened to be married in his boyhood, unless again ... but he knows not whether this was (said) in joke, ...
... examined at the command of the bailiffs of his lord John de Stonhus and others, &c., agrees with the last sworn as to the age of the said John, because his father died in the same year, and that at the time of his contract with the said Aubrey he was 4 years old and as much time as is between the Purification and Nativity of Mary, and that he never really married her. He had heard him declaim against the marriage, and on that article agrees with the last sworn, upon hearing which article the said Aubrey wept; the said Aubrey stayed at the said John's manor from the day of SS. Simon and Jude to Whitsunday, and again the said John came to Rochampton where she was staying, and she asked him why he ... , he answered nothing but afterwards always avoided her presence.
... de Newynton, of Rochampton, says that the said John is 27, and otherwise agrees with the above sworn.
William, Elias and Ralph de Stonhuse, Richard Alwriche, Henry the Reeve (prepositus), William Beverage, and Simon le Nores' of Bremesfeld, agree with previous jurors.
Thomas le Messer, of Bremesfeld, of servile condition, says that the said John is 28 and entering his 29th year, which he knows because on the day of the said John's birth he married his wife, who died 4½ years after and he has always since remained in widowhood.
John de Molendino of Grenham says that the said Sir John will be 29 on the day of St. Walstan, which he knows because he begot a child who will be 29 on that day. (See No. 124.) |
