Benham manor. Humphrey Vis de Lou came with William the Bastard the Conqueror, who gave him the said manor; but King Henry, the king's grandfather, took it from him because he killed a certain knight. Walkelin, his son, was never in seisin of the manor, and left a daughter Isabel, whom the said king gave to Robert de London in marriage, with the said manor, but both died without heirs of their bodies. King Richard enfeoffed Richard de Kaunville of the manor, who died in the Holy Land, and John his son died in England without heir of his body. Gerard, elder brother of the said Richard, then intruded upon the manor, but the king removed him, and delivered it to Hugh Wake, whose son James took to wife, Amy, daughter of Peter de Harthelakeston; and their son Hugh, after their death, gave to the king 10 marks and to the queen 1 mark to have seisin of the manor. After his death came his aunts, Joan de Munby and Aline Wake and entered upon the manor through the king that now is: the said Joan died in seisin of her moiety, and afterwards her son John and the said Aline were impleaded by the said king and lost the manor by the judgment of the king's court, and thus the king is in seisin. The manor is worth 24l. and is the king's escheat, unless the heirs of the said Richard de Kaunville have sufficient warranty from the said [king who ?] enfeoffed [their an]cestor.
