payable to the Crown; that the said 3,200l. is much
more than said Lord could make of it while he had
it in his own hands or than it had produced at any
time before; that upon security of said sub-farm
said Lord also received of them 1,650l. to be repaid
in the last half year of their grant which ends at
Michaelmas, 1688; that said duty is always subject
to many and great frauds and particular application
and constant charge are required for prevention
thereof with large and expensive correspondence
at home and abroad, by means whereof some years
passed before said farm was brought to any tolerable
method to answer so great a rent and during the late
Dutch war the Farmers were bona fide 1,805l. 2s. 8d.
in disburse (besides what Lord Townshend received
less on his annual rent) for keeping up the management in that time of small trade; that petitioners
know that to compensate Lord Townshend for the
remainder of his term will not be so much for his
Majesty's advantage as the continuance of the grant
for said remainder: therefore pray consideration
hereof. |

of the petition of Sir Edward Stradling,
bart., Joan Mathew, widow, Lewis Thomas,
esq., Edward Turbervill and Mansell Stradling,
gent., shewing that said Sir Edward, Thomas
and Turbervill were security for said Mansell
Stradling and David Mathew, deceased, for said
Mansell's true accompting as Receiver of the late
Taxes in South Wales; that he was ruined by the
said receipt, having been at far greater charges than
was allowed by the Act of Parliament for collecting
and suffered great losses in his returns; that there
lies in arrear 1,575l. 19s. 2d. on the Eighteen Months'
tax and the last Six Months' tax, and deducting
375l. on Col. Stradling's account and 65l. for arrears
set in super and for certificates of Poll money there
remains 1,135l. 19s. 2d.; that said Mansell made
oath before Baron Street that the expense of the
said receipt cost him 5d. per £ and he has been three
years and five months in that service; that
Exchequer process has gone out against petitioners'
persons, lands and goods: pray relief, having been
faithful to the Crown in the late rebellion to the
utmost rigour of imprisonment, sequestration and
banishment. |

Report by Treasurer Rochester to the King on the
petition of Lord Jefferys, Lord Chief Justice, for a
lease of Upp Park in Sussex forfeited by the late
Lord Grey for treason. The Surveyor General of
Crown Lands reports to me the 10th inst. that the
park contains 500 acres valued, with the capital
messuage and two other messuages, at 150l. per an.
clear and there were 260 deer therein in 1682. If
divided and improved to the utmost value it might
be worth 300l. per an. but on Mr. Graham's discoursing with Mr. Grey he finds that it was formerly
let in two farms at 70l. and 50l. per an. and a sheepwalk, being down, estimated at 100l. per an. The
capital messuage is old and a great deal fallen down
these last two years and may cost 1,000l. to repair,
and the subdividing the farms to bring them to the
former improvement may cost 300l. The timber is
worth 1,000l. If the timber be also granted a fine
of 1,000l. may be reasonable and a reserve rent of
40s. per an. But I cannot advise a longer grant
than 31 years as it would be an infringement of the
rules made and observed for some years last past
in the granting of leases. |

entering the judgment on the verdict in an information lately exhibited in the Exchequer against
John Farren, one of the clerks to the Receiver
General of Customs, for taking some small fees for
paying several debentures for half subsidy and
additional duty to one John Cary, merchant; upon
which case a verdict was given for the Crown against
the defendant, "but the entering of the judgment
thereupon was stopped because the matter touching
the demand of the said fees for the future would be
settled by the said verdict." Further a noli
prosequi is hereby to be entered to prevent any
further prosecution of said Farren. |

Justices of the Peace there, whereby great clamour
and discontent has arisen. You are to write by this
post into the country to have the matter examined
so that the gentlemen of the country may be
satisfied that a speedy enquiry is made. |
