Inquisition taken at Chelsea before Richard Sheppard and Robert Brighte, gentlemen, coroners, on view of the body of Adam Ersbie lying dead and slain at Chelsea, by the oaths of Ambrose Haberion, Thomas Walker, William Redman, John Spenser, William Davys, John Mosse, Simon Coxe, Thomas Spelsworthe, Robert Bostone, Abraham Burredge, Thomas Waitelie, Henry Fausett, John Sheford, and William Goodgier, who say upon their oaths that on 15 May, 11 James I [A.D. 1613], John Waterton, Charles Lacye, John Howell and Daniel Elinge, all of Westminster, yeomen, were walking together at Chelsea in a field called Chelsea Fields (the said Daniel having a gun called a birding-piece worth 5s. charged with hailshot) and came to a "brick keele" in the field whence violently issued a dog which furiously barked at the aforesaid John Waterton, Charles, John Howell and Daniel: upon which the said Daniel threw —by reason of which John Gibbes of Chelsea, labourer, came out of the brick-kiln aforesaid and opprobrious words were spoken between the said John Gibbes and the said John Waterton and the rest. Upon which likewise came out William Kendricke, labourer, who seized the said gun from Daniel Elinge, which the said John Waterton seeing he did lay hold upon the said gun, and immediately there came out of the said brick-kiln Robert Dibbins of Chelsea, labourer, and Thomas Draper—, and fought for the gun with the said John Gibbes, John Waterton and Daniel Elinge. Whereupon the aforesaid Adam Ersbie, by chance approaching, did behold them fighting, and as they were struggling together for the said gun, the said gun did discharge and hit with shot the aforesaid Adam, by misfortune and against their will, and wounded him on the right thigh, so that he died on 19 May next following. And so the jurors say that the said William Kendricke, John Waterton, Daniel Elinge, Robert Dibbins, Thomas Draper, and John Gibbes killed the said Adam Ersbie by misfortune and against their will.
