Lease by Henry Darci, the Mayor, the Aldermen, and Commonalty of the City to Richard de Felstede, carpenter, of the gate; of Aldresgate, together with a parcel of land to the west of the said gate and a garden to the east, excepting a small chamber newly made (de novo facta) for the keeper of the gate, to hold the same for a term of twenty years at an annual rent of 26s. 8d. Sureties for the said Richard, viz., Richard le Lacer, Richard de Berkyng, Aldermen, William de Cave, skinner, and John Turk, fishmonger. Dated in the Chamber of the Guildhall, Monday after the Feast of St. Nicholas [6 Dec.], 11 Edward III. [A. D. 1337].

De bonis Hugon' le Benere tradit' Joh'i "Foot" etc.

Be it remembered that on Saturday before the Feast of SS. Simon and Jude [28 Oct.], 11 Edward III. [A. D. 1337], came John "Fot," vintner, before Gregory de Nortone, the Recorder, and Thomas de Maryns, the Chamberlain, in the Chamber of the Guildhall, and acknowledged he had received from Walter de Mordone and Ralph de Uptone, late Sheriffs, the following goods and chattels appraised in the presence of John de Shirbourne, the Coroner, and Nicholas Crane and Walter Neel, the Sheriffs, on the oaths of Edmund Mohaut, Richard Ichhell, "phelipers," William Sheep' and Thomas de Alegate, "potteres," Richard Chiviot and William le Barber; which goods belonged to Hugh le Benere, who was indicted before the said Coroner and Sheriffs for the death of Alice his wife, and who, being questioned before the Justices of the lord the King for Gaol Delivery of Newgate touching the said death, refused the law of England (refutavit legem Anglie); whereupon, by judgment of the said Justices, the said Hugh was remitted to prison, there to remain until he should die.

Thereupon the said John Fot bound himself, his heirs and executors, to restore to the aforesaid Sheriffs, or one of them, the aforesaid chattels or their value, in case they are aggrieved (si occasionentur) by the King or some other person, and for saving the Mayor, Aldermen, and Commonalty harmless in respect of the same.

Writ to the Mayor and Sheriffs for proclamation to be made against vintners mixing bad wine with good, and not allowing their customers to see whence the wine is drawn. Witness the King at the Tower of London, 13 March, 12 Edward III. [A. D. 1337-8].

Commissio promalefactoribus castigand' et similiter arma portant' contra pacem etc per petrat' tempore Henr' Darci Maior.

Writ to the same for the arrest of those who go armed by night or day, and all misdoers who hold unlawful gatherings contrary to the Statutes of Winchester, Northampton, &c., and for the safe custody of the same in prison until further orders. Witness the King at Langele, 6 April, 12 Edward III. [A. D. 1338].

Letters patent granting indemnity to the Mayor, Sheriffs, and Aldermen for the time being, and their officers who shall arrest and safeguard misdoers and disturbers of the peace contrary to the above Statutes. Witness the King at Westminster, 1 May, 12 Edward III. [A. D. 1338].

Indentura int' Ric'm de Bet toigne et Nich'm Crane.

Indenture touching defeasance of a bond in the sum of £100 entered into by Richard de Bettoigne, conditional on Nicholas Crane, merchant, enjoying peaceable possession of a certain tenement formerly belonging to Herman le Heaumer and demised by the said Richard to the said Nicholas, situate in the parish of All Hallows de Bredstrate. Deeds of conveyance of the said tenement by the said Herman to Richard, as well as by Henry le Waleys to Dame Gertrude de Colon' and to Peter and the aforesaid Herman her sons, are deposited with the said Nicholas. Dated Tuesday before the Feast of the Ascension [21 May], 12 Edward III. [A. D. 1338].

De Turrella dimissa Steph'o atte Conduyt viz juxta Alegate.

Grant by Henry Darci, the Mayor, and Aldermen to Stephen atte Conduyt, vintner, of a certain turret on the south side of Alegate for a term of ten years from the Feast of St. John Bapt. [24 June], 12 Edward III. [A. D. 1338], at a yearly rent of 6s. 8d.

Be it remembered that Henry Darci, the Mayor, and the Aldermen were warned to appear before the King and his Council at Westminster on Monday after the Feast of St. Alphege [19 April], 12 Edward III. [A. D. 1338]. On which day they appeared, and being asked whether they would safeguard the City on behalf of the King, who was about to cross the sea, as the inheritance of the Mayor and citizens (ut hereditatem ipsorum Maioris et civium), they said that they would do so. Thereupon they were commanded to bring a scheme in writing for safeguarding the City for the approval of the King and Council on the following Friday. (fn. 3)

[Here follow ordinances for guarding the City and its gates, providing (inter alia) for the election of six, eight, or twelve of the best men of each Ward to patrol the City day and night, and to see that the King's peace be not broken.]

The scheme being read was approved.

Writ to the Mayor and Sheriffs and collectors of toll, pavage, pontage, and murage in the City that they permit merchants of the town of Coventre to be quit of such demands, according to the terms of their charter. Witness the King at the Tower of London, 20 May, 12 Edward III. [A. D. 1338].

D. 1338], granting to the Mayor, Sheriffs, and citizens of London the right to take certain custom on merchandise entering the City, as set out, in aid of the City's enclosure (in auxilium civitatis claudende), for a term of five years. And be it known that the aforesaid aid for enclosing the City, granted by the King for a term of five years, issuing out of Westsmethefeld, was demised by Henry Darci, the Mayor, to Thomas le Porter; to hold the same from Friday the morrow of the Ascension, viz., the 22nd May, anno 12 Edward III. [A. D. 1338], until the following Feast of the Ascension, for 12 marks, to be paid by monthly instalments of 1 mark.

Writ of Privy Seal to the Mayor and Sheriffs for arraying the armed men of the City who were to accompany the King abroad, and for having them at 'Gippewyz" on Monday the octave of Trinity [7 June]. Dated at the town of St. Edmund, 3 June, 12 Edward III. [A. D. 1338].

Writ of Privy Seal to the Mayor and Aldermen charging them to hasten the dispatch of the men who were to accompany the King abroad, and to see that they were such as prescribed in private communications. Dated at Walton, 20 June, 12 Edward III. [A. D. 1338].

And forasmuch as many of those who had been chosen by the Mayor, Aldermen, and Commonalty to cross the sea with the King in aid of the war, and of whom mention had been made in the King's Council, declared that they were about to cross the sea with the King in the suite of divers magnates who hired them for wages, the said Mayor, Aldermen, and Commonalty elected 100 men, 40 of them being armed, and 60 archers; (fn. 5) and each Ward was assessed according to its size, viz., Tower Ward for 7 men, &c.

Ordinacio de braciatoribus et concessio eorumdem.

Be it remembered that on Wednesday after the Feast of All Saints [1 Nov.], 11 Edward III. [A. D. 1337], came all the brewers and brewsters of the City and suburbs before Henry Darci, the Mayor, John de Grantham, Gregory de Nortone, John Hamond, Andrew Aubrey, Ralph de Uptone, Simon Fraunceys, Nicholas Crane, and others of the Commonalty, on summons, and they were forbidden by the said Mayor and Aldermen to sell by any other measure than a gallon, potel, and quart, or to sell a gallon of the best ale for more than three halfpence, or a gallon of medium ale for more than a penny, or of a worse quality for more than three farthings. And the same day it was ordained by the said Mayor and Aldermen, and agreed to by the said brewers, that if any of them made default in any of the premises, the delinquent should for the first offence be committed to prison, there to remain three days, and on his exit pay 40 pence to the City's use, and for the second offence be committed for six days and pay half a mark, and for the fourth [sic] offence abjure the City, &c. (fn. 7)

Writ of Edward, Duke of Cornwall and Custos of England, to the Mayor, Aldermen, and Sheriffs of London, charging them to fortify the City and protect the Thames against invasion, and to call to their aid all those holding rents in the City, as well religious as others. Dated at Kenyngtone, 23 Oct., 12 Edward III. [A. D. 1338].

Comp' Conductus.

The account of Richard de Gaunt and Thomas le Peautrer, Wardens of the Conduit, rendered before Richard le Lacer, Alderman, and Thomas de Maryns, the Chamberlain, auditors appointed by Henry Darci, the Mayor, and the Aldermen, viz., for one year from the Feast of the Nativity of St. John Bapt. [24 June], anno 7 Edward III. [A. D. 1333].

The said Richard charges himself and the said Thomas, who is dead (qui mortuus), with the sum of £6 and 18d. received in quitrent for divers tankards. He discharges himself of the sum of £9 10s. 2d. for lead and other necessaries for the Conduit.

The account of the aforesaid Richard and Thomas [sic] for one year from the same Feast, anno 8 Edward III. [A. D. 1334].

They charge themselves [sic] with the sum of £6 6s. 6d. received in quitrent for divers tynes (tynis), tankards, &c.

The said Richard discharges himself of the sum of £4 and 22d. for making a clay wall around the head of the Conduit at Tyburne, &c.

The account of the aforesaid Richard and Thomas [sic] for one year from the same Feast, anno 9 Edward III. [A. D. 1335], and up to the Feast of St. Clement next ensuing [23 Nov.].

They charge themselves with the sum of £6 13s. 4d. received in quitrent of divers tynes and tankards.

They discharge themselves of the sum of £7 11s. 7½d. for the repair of two broken brass taps (clavorum), &c. (fn. 8)

At a congregation of the Mayor, Aldermen, and Commonalty, held on Friday after the Feast of St. Luke [18 Oct.], 12 Edward III. [A. D. 1338], there being present Henry Darci, the Mayor, John de Prestone, Reginald de Conduit, John de Grantham, Richard Lacer, Andrew Aubrey, Simon Fraunceys, John Hamond, Ralph de Uptone, Richard Costantyn, Richard de Berkyng, Roger de Forsham, Nicholas Crane, and William de Brykelesworth, it was ordained that every freeman of the City might in future, for the common good of the citizens, sell his ox hides and cow hides to whom he would without hindrance of the Sheriffs or their officers, &c.

At a congregation of Henry Darci, the Mayor, the Aldermen, and a great Commonalty, held on Monday the Feast of Souls [2 Nov.], 12 Edward III. [A. D. 1338], Robert Flambard, Serjeant-at-arms of the City, presented letters from the King, dated at Antwerp, 18 Oct., 12 Edward III. [A. D. 1338], excusing him from executing the duty of Macebearer (loffice de porter la mace) in the City, lately conferred upon him for life, by reason of his being engaged in attendance on the King. (fn. 10)

In the same congregation John Bevyn was, with the consent of the above Robert, sworn to execute the office of Macebearer and to take the profits thereof until the said Robert was willing to occupy the same personally.

Thereupon the said Robert surrendered to the Mayor, Aldermen, and Commonalty the bailiwick which he had in Suthewerk (fn. 12) at their hands.

Afterwards, viz., at the Husting held on Monday the Feast of St. Clement [23 Nov.], 12 Edward III. [A. D. 1338], the bailiwick of Suthwerk was given to Nicholas de Abyndone at an annual rent of £12. Sureties for the said Nicholas, viz., John Bole, Richard Paterling, and Henry le Vannere, who bound themselves jointly and severally before Henry Darci, the Mayor, John Hamond, Richard de Berkyng, Roger de Forsham, Walter Neel, William de Brikelesworth, Aldermen, Roger de Depham, the Recorder, and the Commonalty.
