Be it remembered that in the house called "la Bretask," (fn. 1) near the Tower of London, there are 7 springalds and 380 quarels feathered with "latone" and with heads; and 500 quarels feathered with wood, with heads and 29 cords called "strenges." Also 8 bows of ash for the same springalds.

Also at Alegate, viz.: beyond the gate thereof, 1 springald with 2 "strenges" and a "faussecord" for the same. Also 40 quarels feathered with "latone" and headed with iron.

Also in the Chamber of the Guildhall there are 6 instruments of "latone" called (vocata) "Gonnes," with 5 "teleres" (fn. 2) for the same. Also pellets of lead for the same instruments which weigh 400 lb. and a half. Also 32 lb. of powder for the said instruments.

7 Oct., 14 Edward III. [A. D. 1340], came John Lovekyn, "sherman," now draper and citizen of London, before Richard de Berkynge, Alderman, and Thomas de Maryns, Chamberlain, and acknowledged satisfaction of all debts due to him by Robert de Waltham.

Memorandum touching a springald with 80 quarels feathered with "latone" and headed with iron, and 2 "strenges" and a fauss[ecord]....... "bowes" of ash for the same, and 24 targes of the same pattern as other targes (de secta aliorum targiorum) delivered to William Haunsard, under penalty...... to the Commonalty, as he allowed before Henry Darci, the Mayor, and the Aldermen, .

Deed of acquittance by John de Syndlesham, called John de Bedyngtone, brother and heir of Sir Richard de Syndlesham, deceased, and Walter de Mordone, citizens and burgesses of London, to Dino Fozortti, of the Society of the Bardi of Florence, for the sum of 90 gold florins of Florence due to the late Sir Richard, and covenant to indemnify the said Dino and Society in respect of the said payment. Dated 19 July, 11 Edward III. [A. D. 1337].

A memorandum [inter alia] to the effect that the lord the King owed the good men of London for loans made in the Mayoralty of Andrew Aubrey and Richard Lacer the sum of £6,333 6s. 8d.

The Commonalty of the City of London, by Ralph Pecok their attorney, demand against Hugh, Bishop of Bedleem, a certain messuage in the suburb of London. The said Bishop defends the right and puts himself on an inquest of the country, after the manner of a Great Assize, according to the custom of the City, as to whether he has not the greater right to the said messuage as the right of his church of St. Mary de Bedleem. Accordingly, let twenty-four be summoned against the next Court, &c.

Pleas of land held on Monday the morrow of H. Trinity [9 June], 25 Edward I. [A. D. 1297] Proceedings touching the above messuage After making default, the Bishop appears by his attorney, but fails to maintain his defence. Judgment for the Commonalty.

D. 1337], came Philip Gentil, senior, before John de Pulteneye, the Mayor, and the rest of the Aldermen and Thomas de Maryns, the Chamberlain, and covenanted to answer for the property demised by Walter le Ussher, (fn. 5) tanner, to his daughters Sarah, Alice, and Johanna. Names of those who lent the money underwritten for making presents to the King, the Queen, and other magnates temp. John de Pulteneye, Mayor, and Thomas de Maryns, Chamberlain, viz., at the Parliament held on Monday after the Feast of St. Matthias [24 Feb.], 11 Edward III. [A. D. 1336-7]. (fn. 6) which money so lent each of them has a bill under seal of the Chamber in these words, viz. :-

There are due to Peter de Triple, spicer, of the assize next to be levied in the City of London 20 shillings sterling, which he lent for making presents to the King, Queen, and other magnates, Saturday before the Feast of the Epiphany of our Lord [6 Jan.], 10 Edward III. Writ to the same for proclamation to be made that the above foot soldiers, as well as the masters and seamen of ships seized for the King's use, be at Portesmuth with the said ships by Trinity Sunday. Witness the King at Wyndesore, 27 April, 11 Edward III. [A. D. 1337].

Writ to the same complaining of their dilatoriness in executing the King's orders, as well as of the physique of the men selected for his service, and bidding them select 200 archers of the 500 men required, from among the strongest and healthiest men of the City, to be ready in the quinzaine of the Nativity St. John Bapt., the selection of the remainder being postponed at the request of John de Pulteneye, the Mayor. Letters patent of Edward III. to the effect that whereas in a Parliament held at York on the morrow of the Ascension [25 May], anno 9 Edward III. [A. D. 1335], (fn. 12) it was enacted that all merchants, strangers and natives, might sell, if they would, to foreigner and native, save only the King's enemies, corn, wine, merchandise of weight (averium ponderis), flesh, fish, or other victual, wool, cloth, and other goods vendible, in cities, boroughs, vills, ports, &c., within the liberties or without; and whereas it was further enacted that no foreigner or native should be prevented selling such victuals and goods in such places, excepting wines imported into the realm, any charter of liberty to any such city or place as aforesaid to the contrary notwithstanding; and whereas in the statutes of the said Parliament, as of other Parliaments, it has been granted and established that the great charter of the liberties of England in all and singular its articles should be maintained and firmlv observed, and in the same charter it is contained, among other things, that the City of London should have its ancient liberties and free customs uninjured; and whereas it was the intention of us and our progenitors, as well as of the Prelates, Earls, and Barons in the aforesaid Parliaments, and is now our intention, that, by pretext of the statute aforesaid or any other, nothing should be to the prejudice or weakening of the said charter or of the ancient liberties or customs of the City aforesaid; we, wishing to declare our intention that the citizens of that City should not be unduly molested touching their liberties and customs aforesaid contrary to such intent, have granted, with the assent of the Prelates, Earls, and Barons in the present Parliament assembled, for us and our heirs, that the citizens of the aforesaid City and their heirs and successors shall have all their liberties and free customs uninjured and entire as before these times they more freely had the same, the aforesaid statute for the said merchants enacted in prejudice of the liberties and customs of the aforesaid City notwithstanding. Friday before the Feast of SS. Simon and Jude [28 Oct.], 11 Edward III. [A. D. 1337], before John de Grantham, Andrew Aubrey, John Hamond, Richard le Lacer, and Simon Fraunceys, Aldermen, William Haunsard, Henry de Prestone, John de Dallyngge, Richard de Welleford, and Thomas de Waledene, Commoners, and other Aldermen and Commoners [not named], auditors of the Chamberlain's account, there was allowed to Thomas de Maryns, the Chamberlain, the sum of 60s, which had been paid by him to John de Grantham for a horse which the said John lost on the business of the City in going to the Parliament at York (fn. 15) in the ninth year of the reign of King Edward III. [A. D. 1335].

And afterwards Richard de Berkynge, Alderman, and the aforesaid Thomas the Chamberlain, were appointed by John de Pulteneye, the Mayor, and the Aldermen to make a new wall adjoining the gate of Crepelgate, and to repair and cover with lead the said gate and the gate of Aldersgate, and to make two small houses under the said gates for lodging the gate-keepers therein.

Among the receipts are the following, viz.: From Anketin Gisors and Robert Swote, late Wardens of the Bridge, touching their recognizance, £20.; from John de Pulteneye for discharge of the Chamber, 5 marks; money received for engines in the time of the war, £97 15s. 8d.; money borrowed for piles (pro pilis) and making a bretask, (fn. 17) £110.; receipts of murage, £29 3s. 8d.; arrears of account for armed men and archers and of the last account of Henry de Seccheford, 43s. 9d.;

Total of receipts, £493 6s. 2d.

Among the items of expenses occur the following, viz.: Payment of fees (feodorum), £108 12s.; small expenses and presents, £59 18s. 9¾d.; payments made for Aldresgate Ward for the fifteenth of wool and for Nicholas Crane in respect of a fifteenth for three years, 4 marks.

Total of expenses, £486 17s. 9½d.

And so the Chamberlain owes the Commonalty £6 8s. 4½d., out of which he is allowed his fee of 50s for the term between Midsummer and Michaelmas anno 13 Edward III. The balance he will account for in the next account, as also for the sum of 40s. received from John de Hardyngham, clerk of the Sheriff, in respect of an allowance made to the citizens in the Exchequer on the account of Hugh le Marbrer and William de Pounfreyt, late Sheriffs.

Writ to the Mayor, Aldermen, and the whole Commonalty of the City, intimating that at the urgent request of John de Pulteneye, the Mayor, the King permitted the sum of 1,000 marks, of the fifteenth voted for three years in the last Council at Westminster, to be fully allowed in the first year of the payment of the fifteenth. Witness the King at Thame, 25 Oct., 11 Edward III. [A. D. 1337].
