The sign of the Cocke in Woodstreate and the alley called "Cocke Alley," 36 H. VIII. 1544 (L. and P. H. VIII. XIX. Pt. 1, p. 501).

The Cock and Cock Alley described as in the parish of Blessed St. Peter in 4 Ed. VI. (1550) (Lond. I. p.m. I. 81).

Cock Alley mentioned in registers of St. Peter's West Cheap (Trans. L. and M. Arch. Soc. III. 341).

First mention : Messuage called the Cock near London Wall in parish of All Hallows in the Wall 1561 and 1594 (Lond. I. p.m. III. p. 178-9).

The site seems to have been rebuilt in the 18th century; in Strype's maps it appears to have been built over.

The site is now covered by Moorgate Street Station and the Metropolitan Railway lines.

Named after a house called the Sign of the Cock in Moor Lane, given for the Poor of the Parish.

In a Wardmote Inquest, 1560, the inhabitants of this Alley were presented for throwing filth and rubbish out of their windows into Water Lane (now Whitefriars Street). (Trans L. and M. Arch. Soc. N.S. III. (1), p. 61).
