Cock Court

South out of Ludgate Hill at No. 19, in Farringdon Ward Without (Hatton, 1708-Elmes, 1831).

A passage, 40 ft. wide, was made out of the Court into Blackfriars 1760.

Called "Cock Alley," 1760 (Gent. Mag.).

Now St. Martin's Court (q.v.).

Cock Court

South out of White Lion Court, Birchin Lane. In Cornhill Ward (Strype, ed. 1720, I. ii. 150).

Site has been rebuilt.

Cock Court

Out of Angel Alley, Houndsditch. In Portsoken Ward (Strype, ed 1755-Boyle, 1799).

Cock Court

West out of Philip Lane, in Cripplegate Ward Within (O. and M. 1677-Elmes, 1831).

Perhaps identical with the site occupied by "le Cok in the houpe" in parish of St. Alphege mentioned in 1349 in Ct. H.W. I. 566.

Cock Court

West out of Jewry Street. In Aldgate Ward (Hatton, 1708-O.S. 1880).

Former name : "Cock Alley" (O. and M. 1677).

The name is probably taken from a tenement called "the Cocke" in parish of St. Olave Hart Street, sometime belonging to the Crutched Friars, mentioned in 1566 (Lond. I. p.m. II. 53). It also formed one of the boundaries of St. Olave Hart Street parish (Strype, ed. 1720, I. ii. 41).

The site is now occupied by the eastern end of Carlisle Avenue (q.v.).

Cock Court

North out of Fleet Lane, in Farringdon Ward Without (O. and M. 1677-L. Guide, 1750).

Called "Cock Alley" in Strype and L. Guide, 1758.

The site has been rebuilt.

Cock Court

North out of Snow Hill, in Farringdon Ward Without, by Holborn Conduit (Horwood, 1799-Elmes, 1831).

Formerly called "Bell Alley" (q.v.).

Strype speaks of it as a passage into Bell Alley, but in O. and M. the whole Court is called Bell Alley.

Removed for the formation of Holborn Viaduct, etc.

Cock Court

West out of St. Martin's le Grand, in Aldersgate Ward (Horwood, 1799-Elmes, 1831).

First mention : "Cok Alley," in St. Martin's Sanctuary, 1525 (L. and P. H. VIII. IV. (1) p. 473).

Other forms : "Cock Aley," 1541 (ib. XVI. 243). "Cock Alley" (O. and M. 1677-Strype, 1755).

Site afterwards occupied by the old General Post Office buildings.

South out of Catherine Wheel Alley to New Street, Bishopsgate (P.O Directory). In Bishopsgate Ward Without.

First mention : Horwood, 1799.

Cock Inn

On the south side of Leadenhall Street at No. 51, opposite Creechurch Lane (Lockie, 1810-16).

Cock Lane

East out of Snow Hill, at No. 9, to Giltspur Street (P.O. Directory). In Farringdon Ward Without.

First mention : "Cockes lane," c. 1241-50 (Anc. Deeds, A. 1661).

Other forms : "Cockis lane," 1287 (MS. D. and C. St. Paul's Press, A. Box 23, 404). "Cokkes lane," 1311 (Ct. H.W. I. 224).

Prior to the formation of Holborn Viaduct the lane extended rather further west to Holborn Conduit.

Cock Yard

West out of Bishopsgate Street, in Bishopsgate Ward Without (O. and M. 1677-Boyle, 1799).

~The site seems to have been rebuilt in the early part of the 19th century, and Newnham's Place erected there (q.v.).

On the north side of Redcross Street, in Cripplegate Ward Without (O. and M. 1677-Hatton, 1708).

Cockpit Court

West out of Popping's Court, Fleet Street, in Farringdon Ward Without (P.C. 1732-Elmes, 1831).

Former name : "Cock and Py Court" (O. and M. 1677).

Removed for the formation of St. Bride's Street.

The later name is probably a corruption of the earlier one.

Site occupied in O.S. 1880 by entrance to Richard's Buildings (q.v.).
