Seales March of Deal, co. Kent, gent v Josuah Coppin of the city of Canterbury

Abstract

March complained that in the presence of many persons Coppin called him 'a rogue, a rascall, a coward, and threw nutshells in his face'. He allegedly added, 'tell his Capt[ain] (meaning William Bing, esq, Capt[ain] of Deale Castle) March is a base slave and a villaine, and what is his Capt[ain] but Capt[ain] of Deale Castle.'

Edward Moning of Walmer, esq, Richard Selwin of Sandwich, gent, and Edward Boyse of Bonnington, esq, served as commissioners for Coppin. There were court proceedings in June 1635, but nothing further survives.

'Seales March for 5 yeares past is and hath bin Gentleman Porter of the King's Majestie's Castle of Deale, one of his Majestie's commissioners for the passage at Deale. And that Coppin before many persons (such a time and place) said that March was a villain, a rogue, a rascall, a coward, and threw nutshells in his face, thereby to provoke and c. And then and there with an angry countenance said tell his Capt[ain] (meaning William Bing, esq, Capt[ain] of Deale Castle) March is a base slave and a villaine, and what is his Capt[ain] but Capt[ain] of Deale Castle.'
