Pleading: WB states that he ought not owe this debt, as at the time of this bond he was a lay man and of little learning, and that there was an agreement between him and RG that he would make, seal and deliver to RG a certain bond in £29 2s 4d, under a certain condition, namely that if a certain William Goodyng should pay this sum to RG, then the bond would be cancelled. Pleading: John Doreward states that on 27 April 1459, at Bocking, he delivered to a certain William Doreward and Richard Doreward for safe-keeping a sealed chest containing charters and muniments, namely one charter which recorded that he had granted to WD and RD the manor of Leaden Roding in Essex, and other charters and muniments relating to that manor. This chest was to be returned to him on request, and WD and RD therefore had possession. Afterwards, on 30 April 1459, in the parish of St John Zachary in London, they lost this chest, and it came into the possession of Roger Marchall. He states that this chest is the same chest as both plaintiffs seek from him, but he does not know which of them ought to receive it, and asks that the two plaintiffs speak together to decide.
