CANONS OF ROCHESTER

All the prebends of Rochester were, by the charter of incorporation, in the king's gift, although Mary granted bishop Maurice Griffith the right of presentation to them for his lifetime. (fn. 1) After the original holder, prebendaries were not normally designated by the number of the prebend, and the succession has to be traced by reference to predecessors. (fn. 1) Evidence for the succession is implicit in the references given, or is discussed in footnotes.
