Algar son of Dereman

First preb. in cats., 'Algarus filius Deremanni' (Cat. I), 'Algorus filius Dermanni' (Cat. II). Prob. became preb. after 1086 (see Gibbs p. xxii n. 2), when his father, Dereman, held ½ hide in chief at Islington (Domesday Book 1 fo. 130b).

Ulfran

Occ. in cats. between Algar son of Dereman and Richard, 'Ulfrannus [Wulfrannus, Cat. II] capellanus episcopi'. Occ. as can. 1104/5 (WD 4 fo. 19/23r-v, pd. in Rep. p. 61b), 1111/12 (A/24/521, pd. in Rep. p. 26a), 1114/15 (Hale pp. 127-8) and n.d. as 'Wlfraucnus', can. (Liber Vitae Dunelm.: Facsimile, ed. A. H. Thompson (Surtees Soc. cxxxvi) fo. 33v). Prob. to be identified with 'Wlfrannus capellanus', who occ. c. 1108 (Gibbs no. 63). Perhaps to be identified with 'Wulfrannus', who held land of the cans. of St. Paul's, c. 1128 (Davis, London lands p. 56).

Richard

Occ. in cats. between Ulfran and Henry, 'Ricardus filius cancell.'. Not otherwise known. Presum. son of one of the royal chancellors (for whom, see Regesta 11 pp. ix-x).

Henry

Occ. in cats. between Richard and Jocelin de Bohun, 'Henrueris nepos episcopi Gilberti' (Cat. I), 'Henricus nepos episcopi Gilberti' (Cat. II). Not otherwise known. Presum. nephew of Gilbert the Universal, bp. of London (1128-34), and appd. by him before Aug. 1134.

Jocelin de Bohun

Occ. in cats. between Henry and Robert of Salisbury, 'Jocelinus episcopus Sar''. Does not occ. as can. Archdcn. of Winchester, and may have been appd. to this preb. by Henry of Blois, bp. of Winchester, during Henry's period of custody of the bpric. of London, 1138-41 (cf. Diceto 1 252). Bp. of Salisbury, cons. 1142.

Robert of Salisbury

Occ. in cats. between Jocelin de Bohun and John de Greenford, 'Robertus episcopus Exon' [Oxsomens., Cat. I]'. Does not occ. as can. Dean of Salisbury, by June 1148; bp. of Exeter, cons. June 1155.

John de Greenford (fn. 1)

Occ. in cats. between Robert of Salisbury and Richer de Andelys, 'Johannes episcopus Cicestr''. Does not occ. as can. Dean of Chichester, by March 1157; bp. of Chichester, el. Apr. 1173, cons. Oct. 1174.

Richer de Andelys (fn. 2)

Occ. in cats. between John de Greenford and Robert Banastre, 'Richer [Nicherus, Cat. II] de Andeli'. Almost certainly to be identified with Richer precentor of Rouen, who occ. as can. of St. Paul's [1175 × c. 1181] (G.F.L. no. 417).

Occ. in cats. between Richer de Andelys and Robert [du Val], 'Robertus Banastr' archidiaconus'. Does not occ. as can., but archdcn. of Essex from before 1168, to after Apr. 1196, and presum. transf. from an unident. preb. on d. or res. of Richer de Andelys, after 1175.

Robert [du Val]

Occ. in cats. between Robert Banastre and Peter of Ste.-Mère-Eglise, 'Robertus thesaurarius'. Prob. to be identified with Robert du Val, who occ. as treas. of St. Paul's [1184 × 95, or 1197 × 1219] (see above p. 21).

Peter of Ste.-Mère-Eglise (fn. 4)

Occ. in cats. between Robert [du Val] and Ralph Furnis, 'Petrus thesaurarius'. Presum. to be identified with Peter of Ste.-Mère-Eglise, treas. from before May 1212, to d. in Apr. 1227 or Apr. 1228, who presum. transf. from this preb. to preb. of Mora some time before July 1214.

M. Ralph Furnis

Occ. in cats. between Peter of Ste.-Mère-Eglise and Geoffrey de Lucy, 'Radulphus Furnis'. Presum. to be identified with M. Ralph de Furs, who occ. as can. [c. 1214 × Sept. 1216] (Gibbs no. 145), and with Master R. de Fursis, who occ. as can. 1215/16 (A/39/1369).

M. Geoffrey de Lucy

Occ. in cats. between Ralph Furnis and William de Haverhull, 'Galfridus de Lucy'. Occ., not called can., 8 Jan. 1223 (A/38/1219), and 28 Aug. 1223 (cart. of Walden: B.M., Harley MS. 3697 fo. 39v). First occ. as can. Nov. 1223 or a little earlier (Curia Regis Rolls XI no. 1275). Also successively archdcn. of London, from before March 1226; dean by June 1231, to d. in Nov. 1241. Transf. from this preb. to preb. of Totenhall between Dec. 1237 and Feb. 1239.

William de Haverhull (fn. 5)

Occ. in cats. between Geoffrey de Lucy and Fulk Lovel, 'Willelmus de Haverhull [Haverhulle, Cat. II]'. Not appd. until after 1235/6, when still called clk. (WD 1 fo. 60a). (fn. 6) First occ. as can. 4 Feb. 1240 (Reg. Greg. IX no. 5055). D. as can. 23 Aug. 1252 (Chron. Maj. v 320). Commem. 23 Aug. (Obit. II fo. 109r), 24 Aug. (Obits. III fo. 96r, IV pp. 69, 94).

Fulk Lovel

Occ. in cats. between William de Haverhull and Philip Lovel, 'Fulco Lovel'. First occ. as can. 9 Apr. 1255 (Reg. Alex. IV no. 322). Presum. transf. from this preb. to preb. of Caddington Major between Oct. 1257 and Dec. 1259.

Philip Lovel

Occ. in cats. between Fulk Lovel and Hugh de Dodingham, 'Philippus Lovel'. Presum. transf. from preb. of Weldland after Oct. 1257. Occ. as can. 25 Jan. 1259 (Reg. Alex. IV no. 2813). D. prob. as can. 29 Dec. 1259 (Chron. Maj. v 731).

Hugh de Dodingham

Occ. in cats. between Philip Lovel and Peter de Rivaux, 'Hugo de Dodingh''. Not otherwise known, unless to be identified with Hugh de Mortuo Mari, preb. of Pancratius (cf. below p. 70), who held church of Donington (Lincoln dioc.), 1268 (Reg. Sutton 1 78).

Peter de Rivaux (fn. 7)

Occ. in cats. between Hugh de Dodingham and Ralph de Dunion, 'Petrus de Aurivall''. Keeper of king's wardrobe, Sept. 1257-June 1258 (Tout, Chapters 1 282). Still alive 20 July 1261 (C.P.R. 1258-66 p. 170). D. as preb. before 2 Nov. 1262 (C.P.R. 1266-72 p. 739).

Ralph de Dunion

Occ. in cats. between Peter de Rivaux and William de Montfort, 'Radulphus Dungon'. Royal gr. of preb. in St. Paul's in succession to Peter de Rivaux, 2 Nov. 1262 (C.P.R. 1266-72 p. 739; cf. C.P.R. 1258-66 p. 256). Will dated 15 Feb. 1283 (A/66/7). D. prob. as can. 10 Oct. 1285 (Flor. Hist. 111 64). Commem. 10 Oct. (Obits. II fo. 109v, IV pp. 71, 97). Will proved 2 June 1286 (Cal. of Wills 1 77).

M. William de Montfort

Occ. in cats. between Ralph de Dunion and John de Luco, 'magister Willelmus de Muntfort' (Cat. I), 'Willelmus de Monford'' (Cat. II). Instal. as can. 31 Oct. 1285 (B.M., Harley MS. 6956 fo. 89v, from missing Liber F). Also dean, el. Oct. 1285, d. Sept. 1294. Possibly transf. to an unident. preb. before d. (cf. below).

[M. Ralph de Baldock

Occ. in Cat. II between Thomas de Charlton (res. 1327) and Thomas de Astley (who presum. preceded Charlton). Presum. misplaced (see Le Neve, Fasti 1300-1541 v (1963) 43). Difficult to fit into chronology of preb. unless held it for very short period between Montfort and Luco. Also preb. of Holbourn and Newington. Also successively archdcn. of Middlesex, by June 1278; dean, Oct. 1294-Feb. 1306.]

M. John de Luco

Occ. in cats. between William de Montfort and William de Sardene, 'Johannes de Luco per commut. [Cat. II omits per commut.]'. Presum. transf. from preb. of Weldland before Apr. 1295. Occ. this preb. c. 1294 (Liber F valor). (fn. 8) Last occ. as can. 28 May 1300 (Westminster, D. & C., Ch. 12325), and 1300 (Reg. W. Greenfield 1, ed. W. Brown (Surtees Soc. cxlv) 13).
