Same to the Clerk of the Signet for a same for a
grant to Sir Thomas Duppa as follows. The said
Duppa has been employed as Receiver of the Tenths
of the Clergy in the dioceses of Lincoln, Exeter
and Sarum for several years and gave bond 1675,
Dec. 6, in 2,000l. for his due accounting. Writs
have issued in Hilary term last upon said bond
and from inquisitions thereupon it was found that
John Hinde, late of London, goldsmith, with John
Toplady, gave bond 1684, Aug. 6, in 5,000l. to
said Duppa conditioned to pay him 2,500l. and
another bond 1685, April 9, in 1,000l. conditioned
he pay him 500l. and they are indebted to him in
50l. more. The sheriffs of London seized said bonds
into the King's hands and thereon extents have
issued against Hinde and Toplady and from inquisitions taken thereon it is found that by patent of
1684, Sept. 26, the King granted Sir Samuel Morland
pensions of 200l. per an. and 400l. and that same
are in arrear from 1682 [sic], Christmas, 1,500l. for
2½ years, which arrear Morland did by deed dated
1682 [sic], June 24, assign to James Wellington,
together with 300l. more which was then due and
which is since received by said Hinde. By indenture
dated 1682, Aug. 30, said Wellington assigned said
arrear to said Hinde. Further, it was found that
by patent dated 1680, May 28, the late King granted
the Earl of Sunderland an annuity of 1,000l. out
of the Tenths of several dioceses and by indenture
dated 1680, July 7, said Earl assigned said annuity
to said Duppa for one year ended 1684, Sept. 29,
one moiety whereof was in trust for Thomas Kirwood,
late of London, goldsmith, whose executor said
Hinde is. Hereon there has been paid at the
Exchequer to said Duppa in trust for Hinde [sic]
500l., being one moiety of said 1,000l. Further,
the said Morland gave bond 1682, June 24, in
3,600l. to said Hinde to pay the 1,800l. assigned as
aforesaid or so much thereof as should not be received
on said patent. The said sheriffs have seized into
the King's hands said 1,500l. and 500l. and said
Morland's 3,600l. bond. The moneys or arrears
which so belonged to said Hinde and are so seized
into the King's hands are in the King's dispose.
On said Duppa's petition it has been reported Mar. 24
last by Bartholomew Fillingham, Tho. Hall and
William Lowndes, "our agents employed in divers
our affairs," that of said Hinde's and Toplady's
debts to said Duppa 1,000l. is endorsed as paid upon
their 2,500l. bond [? leaving due] "upon that bond
1,500l. and upon the other bond mentioned in the
said inquisition 500l. and upon a note the abovesaid
sum of 1,500l. in all 2,050l. [sic] " further, that
said Morland only received 900l. for said assignment
of 1,800l. to Wellington and if he repaid the 900l.
with interest and 200l. more as gratuity the assignee
was to be contented and therefore Morland
desired that his case should be considered
before any assignment be made by the King to
Duppa. |

In order to enable Duppa to pay the Tenths
which he owes to the King his Majesty hereby
grants him the said 500l. which he received on the
Earl of Sunderland's pension and which is seized
into the King's hands as above; to hold same to
him and his heirs without account for ever and also
that he be paid 1,100l. out of the said Morland's
arrear of 1,500l. owing on said Morland's pensions
and similarly seized (the said 1,100l. being adjusted
and agreed between said Morland and said Duppa as
sufficing to satisfy the said debt owing by Morland
to Wellington); the remaining 400l. thereof being
hereby to be paid to said Morland to his own use
without account: Duppa to have said 1,100l. to
his own use and behoof without account. Further,
when Duppa shall have received said 1,100l. then the
said Morland, his heirs, lands and goods shall hereby
be absolutely freed and discharged against the
King and his successors from the said 3,600l.

and James Hoare, Commissioners for executing the
office of Master and Worker of the Mint, to observe
the rules and orders of the Commission to them of
1685–6, Mar. 11, and the terms of the Mint indenture
of 1670, Oct. 8, in the coining of moneys ("the
assaying, weighing, receiving, rating, commixing,
melting, coyning, pixing and paying or delivering
of our own as well as our subjects' gold and silver
when converted into our current moneys"): all
by reason that Henry Slingsby appointed by patent
dated 1662, Dec 31, Master and Worker of the Mint
with Sir Ralph Freeman, since deceased, has
surrendered said office by deed dated April 20 [last]
by which means some question may arise whether
the Commission of 1685–6, Mar. 11, to the abovesaid
Commissioners be not avoided; and further because
a new Mint indenture cannot suddenly be prepared;
which obstructions to the working of the Mint
might be of great prejudice at this time. |

the late King directed the Queen Dowager's trustees
to pay said auditor 125l. 3s. 10d. per an. for his
riding charges according to the prayer of said
petition, but upon receipt of the order the Queen's
Council sent to Secretary Coventry a full state of
their proceedings therein, which was referred to
Sir William Jones, then Attorney General, whose
report thereon shows the just sentence therein
given by the Board. Sir Robert Sawyer, [the
present] Attorney General, agrees the right to be
with the Queen's auditor "and whenever I am
heard upon these papers I conceive he will find
good reason to alter several things in his report." |

distress for the money and be hurried before Justices
of the Peace on account thereof and that if no more
encouragement be given them than a moiety of the
growing duty they will excuse themselves of such
trouble and return such houses as parish houses
which are in no wise liable, wherefore you desire
power to reward the officers with a moiety of the
arrears where a rent of 10s. or more is paid. You
are hereby in such cases to direct the officers to
collect the arrears with the growing duty and to
reward them with a moiety thereof for their
encouragement. |
