RECORDS OF THE CORPORATION OF KINGSTON UPON HULL PRESERVED IN THE TOWN CLERKS DEPARTMENT

In 1969 the records were in the process of being rearranged. The method by which the records are cited in the present volume, reflecting their arrangement during the preparation of the volume, is here briefly outlined.

The four main classes cited are:

1. Bench Books, or corporation memoranda and minute books, of which vols. 1, 3, 3A, and 4 are foliated and vols. 2 and 5–12 are paginated. Cited as e.g. B.B. 7, p. 123
2. Deeds " " D.123
3. Letters " " L.123
4. Miscellaneous documents " " M.123

deeds, letters, and miscellaneous documents are listed in Stanewell's Calendar.

Other records, many of them books, that were kept on numbered shelves are cited by shelf-number and description of record, e.g. Shelf 61 (Cases and opinions, 1831–6).

Most of the remaining records, which were kept in steel cupboards but retained the numbers of the boxes in which they had formerly lain, are cited by the box-number and by either the number or the descriptive title of the bundle within the box; for a document not included in a bundle the box-number is followed by a description of the document in parentheses: e.g. Box 113, Bdle. 61a; Box 13, Hull Electric Lighting Order, 1890; Box 114 (Contract to Sculcoates Union, 1874).

Documents of title and a few others, previously kept in the aforementioned boxes but later placed with the modern run of numbered documents, are cited by the letter A followed by the number, e.g. A. 81.

The abbreviation 'Hull Corp. Rec.' precedes all the above references.
