EDITORIAL NOTE

This is the third volume of the Victoria History of Gloucestershire to be published since the establishment of the Victoria History. The structure and aims of the History as a whole are outlined in an article published in the Bulletin of the Institute of Historical Research, Vol. XL (No. 101, May 1967).

The revival of the Gloucestershire History in 1958 is described in the Editorial Note to Volume VI. The arrangements outlined there by which the Gloucestershire County Council and the University of London collaborate to produce the History of the county have remained unaltered, and the present volume is the second to be produced by that partnership. Again it is necessary to record the University's appreciation of the generous attitude displayed by the County Council.

Lt.-Col. A. B. L. Lloyd-Baker, D.S.O., T.D., who had been Chairman of the Gloucestershire Victoria History Sub-Committee since its formation in 1959, relinquished that position in 1966, on resigning from the County Council. In his place Mr. G. T. St. J. Sanders became Chairman. In October 1964 Mrs. J. R. Morgan resigned her appointment as assistant editor. She was succeeded in September 1965 by Mr. N. M. Herbert.

Many people have given help in the preparation of the present volume. Most of those whose services benefited a single parish are named in the footnotes to the accounts of those parishes. Their co-operation is greatly appreciated. The notes compiled by the late Mr. A. Cossons of Nottingham on the turnpike roads of the county and those compiled by Mr. G. Dutton of Barnwood on the history of religious nonconformity in Gloucestershire have again been of value. The libraries, record offices, and collections, both public and private, whose resources have been exploited are indicated in the footnotes. For the present volume much use has been made of the Worcestershire County Record Office, and the editor is indebted to the Worcestershire County Archivist, Mr. E. H. Sargeant, and his staff, for their co-operation. The Gloucestershire Records Office and the Gloucester City Library have continued to give their indispensable assistance, and the efforts of the County Records Officer, Mr. I. E. Gray, M.B.E., and the City Librarian, Mr. A. J. I. Parrott, and of their respective staffs are recorded with gratitude.
