ALDERMEN OF GLOUCESTER 1483–1835

Under its charter of 1483 Gloucester had 12 aldermen, who were to hold office for life and one of whom was to serve each year as mayor. Under the Municipal Corporations Act the existing bench of aldermen retired from office at the end of 1835.

The list is based on G.B.R., B 2/1, ff. 26v.–31, 36–39v., 60–63v.; on the records of elections and the lists of the common council in ibid. B 3/1–14; and on Ripley, 'Glouc. 1660–1740', App. XXV. Other sources are given in the footnotes. There are probably some names missing in the period 1483–1503. An asterisk indicates where the appointment or removal of an alderman was the result of government intervention.

Most of the aldermen served two terms as sheriff before their appointment and one or two terms as mayor after it. For a list of mayors and sheriffs during the period, see Fosbrooke, Glouc. 208–11 (which can be completed up to 1835 from G.B.R., B 3/13–14).
