Principal Clerk Assistant 1815-56
This office was created in 1815. The holder was given the rank of a Chief Clerk and the function of relieving the Secretaries of part of the burden of their work. (fn. 1) In 1834 the Principal Clerk Assistant was placed in rank after the Auditor of the Civil List. (fn. 2) The office was abolished in 1856. (fn. 3)
The salary attached to the office in 1815 was £1400. (fn. 4) In 1821 it was reduced, for future holders, to £1100. (fn. 5) In 1841 a progressive salary was introduced, beginning at £1100 and rising after three years to £1150 and after five years to £1200. (fn. 6)
