NOTE

The reader should bear in mind throughout that the date of the Domesday Survey is 1086; that King Edward, to whose time it refers as 'T. R. E.' i.e. 'tempore Regis Edwardi,' died January 5, 1066; that the 'hide' was the unit of assessment on which the (Dane) geld was paid; that its subdivisions were: the 'virgate,' one-quarter of the hide; the 'ferling' (farthing), one-quarter of the virgate; and the acre, of which 120 went to one hide. The 'demesne' was the lord's portion of the manor, the peasantry holding the rest under him.

The Rev. J. Collinson prefixed to his History of the County, published in 1791, a copy of the Exchequer Domesday, with an index giving the modern names of places. On the whole the index quite deserves the praise bestowed upon it by the Rev. R. W. Eyton in his Analysis and Digest of the Somerset Survey (according to the Exon codex) and of the Geld Inquest of 1084, 2 vols., 1880. In this latter work the manors are arranged under the Hundreds mainly by means of clues afforded by a close study of the Geld Inquest. The identifications include nearly every manor mentioned, and correct not a few of Collinson's suggestions. In 1899 the present writer printed (Som. Arch. Proc. XLV. ii. 51) an analysis of the Survey arranged to show the prevalence of manors, single or grouped, containing a unit or multiple of five hides. In working it out he availed himself of the immense mass of additional information contained in the Somerset Record Society's volumes, of articles in the Som. and Dors. Notes and Queries, as well as of the six-inch maps of the Ordnance Survey. In 1902, the Rev. T. W. Whale issued an analysis of the Exeter codex and the Geld Inquest. A number of the identifications in the following pages are based upon corrections made therein. But even now finality has not yet been reached. The sites of manors long since obsolete are brought to light quite unexpectedly, and references in early records, by enabling the descent of manors bearing the same name to be accurately distinguished, give clues which eventually carry back their history to Domesday.

  • 49. In Domesday Book this passage is thus compressed: '2 ploughs are there in demense and 6 serfs, and (there are) 12 villeins and 17 bordars with 3½ ploughs. There are 2 mills, which pay 14 shillings and 2 pence, and 19 acres of meadow, and 100 acres of pasture, and 20 acres of woodland. . . . and (these estates) were worth 70 shillings; they now pay 6 pounds and 10 shillings.' In this version the other ploughs are again recorded, and the 70 shillings valuation is referred to the time of King Edward, not to that of the Bishop's succession.
  • 50. This 'Lega' is perhaps Pyleigh, or West Leigh, in Lydeard St. Lawrence. As Leghe Episcopi it has a separate schedule in the Exchequer Lay Subsidy of 1327 (Som. Record Soc. iii. 148). In the same Hundred of Taunton are the schedules of Leghe Militis (Angersleigh) and 'Chappeleghe.'
  • 51. In Domesday Book this passage is thus compressed: 'There is land for 5 ploughs. There are 6 villeins and 3 bordars and 4 serfs and 11 acres of meadow and 100 acres of pasture and 49 acres of wood(land). It was and is worth 45 shillings.

  • 59. Leofwine.
  • 60. Exact equivalent not now known. In Exeter Dom.: 'Turnie' and 'Turnietta.' It is the ' Tournegate' of a Final Concord concerning land in Wyke and Kingsbury in Milborne Port (Ped. Fin. 42 Ed. III. 33; S.R.S. xvii. 68); or the 'Tournegate' of another Final Concord concerning lands in Toomer and Endeston in Henstridge, to the south of Templecombe; Ped. Fin. 14 Rich. II. 21, (S.R.S. xvii. 144).
  • 61. Exet. Dom. reads: '14.'
  • 62. Exet. Dom. '23.'
  • 63. Exet. Dom. adds: '2 thegns held 4 hides, and 1 thegn held 3 hides.'
  • 64. 'Hasecumbe.' Although hitherto identified with part of Ashcombe in Weston-super-Mare, the other part coming later in this schedule, its position in the sequence is in favour of its identification with Hescombe, an obsolete part of the parish of Odcombe, on the borders of Montacute and Tintinhull. In Kirby's Quest 'Etecumb' (Hececombe) in the Hundred of Tintinhull is held by Bret of Lacy as of the Barony of Trowbridge.

  • 69. A 'ii' interlined before 'vill. i. virg.' is probably intended as a correction of the number of virgates, which should be 2.
  • 70. Exet. Dom. '4.'

  • 73. Exet. Dom. 'morarũ.'
  • 74. In the Supplement to Kirby's Quest (S.R.S. iii. 44), 1303, Clapton-in-Gordano is held by Rich. Artur of the Earl of Gloucester. This entry of 'Clotune' comes among other manors in Portbury Hundred, and may be considered as a clerical error for 'Cloptone.'
  • 75. Exet. Dom.: '(Fulcran and Nigel) have there 2 hides (in demesne) and 32 villeins, who have 14 ploughs.'

  • 86. The tenant Roger is apparently Roger Wythent, who gave the church of Stok to the church of Bath (v. the Martyrology in Chartularies of Bath Priory, S.R.S. vii. 159). In 1221 Roger de Clifton recovered the advowson of the church of 'Radestok' from the Prior of Bath (Ped. Fin. 5 Hen. III. 48; S.R.S. vi. 43).
  • 87. Exet. Dom.: '4.'

  • 91. Exet. Dom. reads '9.'
  • 92. Mediæval variations are Emelebergh (Kirby's Quest), Emnebergh (Nom. Villar.), Empneberghe (Excheq. Lay Subsidy, 1327), Enbarowgh (Inq. p.m. John Butler, 17 Hen. VIII. Chanc. 43).
  • 93. Exet. Dom. reads, 'the aforesaid 5½ hides.'
  • 94. Exet. Dom.: 'Alnod.'
  • 95. Opetone. Augustine de Plessy held 'Hupptone' in Bruton Hundred of the Honour of Gloucester in 1284, Kirby's Quest (Upetone in Nom. Villar.).
  • 96. There are two places of this name in the county, both held of the Earl of Gloucester. One is 'Wydergrave' in Hardington, near Frome; the other is Wergrave in Sandford Orcas; both are obsolete. Its position in the schedule between Midgehill in Chelvey and Stowell in the Hundred of Horethorne is dubious, but the balance is in favour of the identification adopted.
  • 97. 'Estanwella.' This spelling appears in Kirby's Quest in the Hundred of Horethorne, which contains the modern Stowell. In the Nom. villar., 1317, and in the Exchequer Lay Subsidy of 1327 it is 'Stawelle.'
  • 98. Exet. Dom. gives the details of each holding.
  • 99. Exet. Dom.: '15.'
  • 100. A charter of Edward the Confessor to Bishop Giso mentions 'Lytleinge and Hywise.' As Huish Episcopi is not mentioned in Domesday, it is likely that at this date the parish was known by the first name, which has now disappeared.

  • 116. No doubt the 'Geofanstiga' of King Edgar's charter to Bath Abbey (Bath Cartularies, i. 25; S.R.S. vii. 25. It is marked spurious by Kemble). Two of the bounds are the Camelon, the older form of the Cam brook, and the Bath 'herpath,' perhaps the Fosse way. In a later charter (S.R.S. vii. p. 112, Nos. 581, 582) the Prior of Bath acknowledges the tithes coming from the demesne of Robert de Boys in 'Evesty' within the limits of the parish church of Wellow to belong to the Abbey of Cirencester. A Final Concord of 29 Ed. I., No. 76 (S.R.S. vi. 314) mentions 'Eversyjuxta-Combe Hawey.' So the position of the place can be settled, but the name is quite obsolete.
  • 117. This appears to refer to all the preceding manors.
  • 118. In Exet. Dom. 'Padenaberia.'
  • 119. Exet. Dom. gives details of each holding.
  • 120. Exet. Dom. : 'super illam terram quæ non reddidit gildum.'
  • 121. As there is no place of this name in or near Shapwick, and Chilton (on Polden) does not appear, it is probable that 'Ceptone' really refers to Chilton. In Kirby's Quest Robert de Cheltone holds Cheltone of Cecilia de Beauchamp (representative of Corcelle), who holds of the Abbot.
  • 122. Exet. Dom. gives separate details of each of these four holdings.
  • 123. Caballi with roncini written above.
  • 124. Exet. Dom. has 'Garmund.'

  • 126. Exet. Dom.: '2 monks at Contona; 2 thegns at Aissecota; Algar at Pedewilla.'
  • 127. Exet. Dom. 10 pounds.
  • 128. This is superfluous to the 20 hides of Butleigh. Its position in the schedule among portions of the great manor of Walton would lead to the belief that it is an obsolete ville, but again it is superfluous. At present it must be left doubtful.
  • 129. Exet. Dom. reads iiii virg., the last stroke interlined.
  • 130. Exet. Dom. gives details of each holding.
  • 131. Exet. Dom. mentions '3 thegns' and 'Sirewold.'
  • 132. Exet. Dom. gives details of each holding.
  • 133. Exet. Dom. reads : 'Alward holds half a hide which Alestan held T.R.E.'
  • 134. Lodreford. Bowen's map of Somerset (1750) marks Loderford south-east of Walton, evidently close to Butleigh moor, now in the civil parish of Walton, but formerly a detached part of Butleigh. There is another 'Loderford,' hodie Lattiford, a detached part of the parish of Holton, situate in North Cheriton. Blackford, Holton and 'Loterforde' are in the Hundred of Whitley (Excheq. Lay Subsidy, 1327). In Domesday Humphrey the chamberlain is tenant both of Halton and Loderford, which rather points to Lattiford as being the modern representative of 'Lodreford.'
  • 135. Exet. Dom.: '1½.'
  • 136. Exet. Dom. reads 'Coriscoma.'

  • 145. Exet. Dom.: 'two thegns and Alfric the reeve (prepositus).'
  • 146. Exet. Dom. gives details of each holding.
  • 147. Exet. Dom. reads: 'Iodena Wirda.' Being held temp. Domesday by Walter of Dowai, it may be identified with the manor of Edenworthy in Brent Mareys, a moiety of which was held by George de Cantilupe, son of William de C., as a member of the Barony of Worleston or Worle, this being also a holding of W. de Dowai (Inq. p.m. George de C., 1 Edw. I. 16). In the Rentalia of Glastonbury, temp. Abbot Michael de Ambresbury (1235–1252), Will. de Cantilupe and Helyas de Bello Campo held '1 fee at Edenewrth and Kington (in Wilts)' (S.R.S. v. 3). In the Nom. Villarum of 1317, John son of Thomas Beauchamp held 'Yadenworth' in the Hundred of Bempstone.
  • 148. Exet. Dom.: 'nor could he be separated from the church.'
  • 149. Som. Arch. and Nat. Hist. Proc. xlv. ii. 74–5.
  • 150. This abstract is given only in the Exeter Domesday.
  • 151. Exet. Dom. adds 'pariter.'
  • 152. Exet. Dom. as usual gives the separate items for each holding.
  • 153. Exet. Dom. reads: '1½ ploughs.'
  • 154. Exet. Dom. values the abbot's portion at 9 pounds, and Dodeman's at 20 shillings; 'and when he received it, 10 shillings.'
  • 155. Exet. Dom. arranges this and succeeding entries under 'Lands given in almoin' (fo. 196), that of Shaftesbury excepted.
  • 156. Eyton identifies this anonymous manor as one moiety of Nunney (Dom. Stud. Som. i. 158–60).
  • 157. i.e. the nunnery of Shaftesbury.
  • 158. Of Ilchester, v. ante p. 467.
  • 159. Exet. Dom.: 'Land which has been given to the saints in almoin.' The order of the entries runs: North Petherton, Edith the Nun, Bera, Cannington, South Petherton, Carhampton, Honicote, Waverdinestoc, Milverton, Crewkerne, Curry (Rivel), Ilchester, Puriton, Lege, Ragiol, Frome, (Nunney,) Kilmersdon.
  • 160. Exet. Dom. has 'carrucatas.'
  • 161. This place can be identified with the later Stokegomer, hodie Stogumber, by references to its ancient lords; Richer de Andeleio of the Exet. Domesday being replaced by John de Andeli, who held a tenement in demesne in 'Stoke Gunner' in 1226 (Som. Plea Rolls 9–10 Hen. III. 299; S.R.S. xi. p. 64). Walter de Andelys gave the advowson of 'Stokgummer' to the Bishop of Bath and Wells in 1256 (Wells Cath. MSS., Hist. MSS. Report, 1885). In Kirby's Quest, 1285, Robert de Andely holds 'Stokegommer' of Henry de Lacy, Earl of Lincoln. I have not found any example of the earlier form of the word outside Domesday.
  • 162. In the Exchequer Domesday (facsimile) this is written Ebra.
  • 163. Exet. Dom. reads: '3 villeins and 4 bordars.'
  • 164. Plumba = a dish used as a measure for ore, afterwards the due payable on the measure (Eyton, Som. Dom. i. 41).
  • 165. Exet. Dom. reads : '3.'
  • 166. Boloniensis interlined in red.
  • 167. Contitone, held of Count Eustace by Maud. This was one of three places of the same name left unidentified by Eyton. The other two, with a total of 5 hides, belonging to Walter of Dowai, can be identified with part of Chilcompton. The only other parish of Compton on the modern map not provided with a Domesday prototype is Compton Bishop. This has generally been taken as a detached part of the great episcopal manor of Banwell; and it was certainly in the Bishop's hands in 1159 (Wells Cath. MSS. 15). Compton Bishop adjoins Loxton, another manor of Count Eustace. While it is not possible to decide the question, it is quite likely that one of the early bishops of the diocese may have obtained Compton for the see. Failing this, 'Contitone' must remain unidentified.
  • 168. It was held in 1284 (Kirby's Quest) by William le Bret of the Barony of Chester (which was Hugh's earldom). As in the case of Tetton and Alre, the family of Brett had succeeded William, whose surname Eyton considers to have been Malbanc (Eyton, Som. Dom. i. 58).
  • 169. Exet. Dom. reads: '2.'
  • 170. Possibly part of Bicknoller, anciently 'Bykenalra.'
  • 171. Exet. Dom. reads : 'abbot.'
  • 172. Exet. Dom. reads : '3.'
  • 173. Exet. Dom. adds here the statement of the custom due to South Petherton, which will be found under the 'Terra Regis.'
  • 174. As nearly all Malger de Cartrai's holdings in this district came to the family of Vaux, this particular manor may be identified with Seavington Vaux or St. Mary.
  • 175. Compton Durvile in 1284 (Kirby's Quest) was held by the heirs of Whytele of the heirs of Essehulle, i.e. Ashill, owned by Vaux.
  • 176. Exet. Dom. has : 'molendinum quod molit annonam suam' ; having no business outside the manor work (Eyton, Som. Dom. i. 41).
  • 177. This entry and those of Tintinhull and Kingstone below are marked with a cross, to show land alienated from the church. See also p. 451.
  • 178. Exet. Dom. reads : 'Alnod abbot of.'
  • 179. Exet. Dom. has: 'Edwi and his four brothers.'
  • 180. Exet. Dom.: '9.'
  • 181. Exet. Dom. : 'Aluiet, Suet and Alvert.'
  • 182. Exet. Dom. adds here the statement concerning 1 virgate detached from Curry Rivel; see under 'Terra Regis.'
  • 183. There are four entries under this name (with variations), with a total of 5 hides. The Bradon of Harding son of Elnod is Goosebradon, whose superior lords were the family of De Meryet (Inq. p.m. John de Meriet, 1 Edw. II., no. 62). Bradon held of the Count by Drogo, rated at 2 hides, is South Bradon, in which Nicholas Reade held 2 hides of Will. de Montacute Earl of Salisbury in 1397 (Inq. p.m. 20 Ric. II. 35). Another Bradon also held of the Count by Drogo (de Montacute), rated at 1 hide, is the single hide held by Will. de Staunton of Will. de Montacute in 1397 as above. The fourth Bradon held of the Count by Malger de Cartrai, rated at 1 hide, should be the single hide in 'Bradene' given by Gervase Ivas to Hugh de Montisorell c. 1220, and by him given to Muchelney Abbey (Much. Cart., Nos. 14, 15, 16, S.R.S. xiv. p. 52). In Nom. Villar., 1317, the Abbot of Muchelney and Cristina de Staunton are entered as owners in North Bradon.
  • 184. Exet. Dom. reads: '1½ hides.'
  • 185. Exet. Dom. reads: 'Hatulf held Doniet T.R.E. and paid geld for 2 hides ; to this manor has been added the land of 2 thegns who held in parage (pariter). Sawin held 1½ hides and Dunstan 1½ hides.'
  • 186. Exet. Dom. states: 'qui molit annonam suam': having no business beyond the work of the manor.
  • 187. Exet. Dom.: '8.'
  • 188. Exet. Dom. allots the 3 ploughs to the villeins.
  • 189. Exet. Dom. reads: 'Godric held Hachia T.R.E. and paid geld for 2 hides ; to this have been added 2 other manors which 2 thegns held in parage (pariter). Godwin had 2 hides and Bollo 1 hide.'
  • 190. i.e. he could not alienate the land.
  • 191. In Kirby's Quest, 1284, Hugh de Courtney held Cricket Malerbe of Simon de Montacute as of his manor of Shepton Montacute.
  • 192. Exet. Dom.: 'in firma mansionis Regis.'
  • 193. Exch.: portarii. Exet. Dom.: 'portitores.'
  • 194. Exet. Dom.: '2.'
  • 195. This entry is written across the whole width of the page at the foot (pl. xiii. in Photozincographed Copy of Domesday), showing that it had been omitted at the proper place, which on the evidence of the Exeter codex is between Appley and Bradon.
  • 196. Exet. Dom.: 'when the Count received it 20 shillings'
  • 197. Exet. Dom. reads : 'Adwin pariter.'
