INTRODUCTION.

The second volume issued by the Sussex Record Society contained a Calendar of the Feet of Fines relating to the county down to 33 Henry III. The present volume is a continuation of this Calendar, and comes down to the end of the reign of Edward I. The Abstracts of the Fines are made on the principle explained in the Introduction to the earlier volume.

Much care has been exercised in compiling the Calendar, but in a work of this kind it is almost impossible to attain absolute accuracy. The similarity in mediæval hands between c and t, n, u and v is bound upon occasion to render the correct reading of a name uncertain.

So far as the Fines contained in this volume are concerned there is little need be said. As a whole they are less detailed and less interesting than those of earlier date, but attention may be called to the interesting series (Nos. 721—726, 729—731, 736) relating to the commutation of services due from fees in the Barony of Bramber.
