Prayers.
Council of State.
THE House this Day proceeded in the Election of Twenty others, to be Members of the Council of State for the Year ensuing.
Mr. Speaker appointed Sir Henry Vane junior, Sir Henry Mildmay, Sir Wm. Armyn, and Mr. Scott, to deliver the Papers to the Clerk to read.
And the said Four Members opened each Paper; and caused the Clerk to read each Name distinctly, and to write down each Name in a several Column: And as any Name was repeated, the Clerk did set down a Stroke under the Name.
And all the Names being read;
Sir Henry Vane junior, Sir Henry Mildmay, Sir Wm. Armyn, and Mr. Scott, reports from the said Four Members, That, in the said Papers, these Persons have the greatest Number of Subscriptions; viz. Richard Salwey, Alderman Allen, Robert Goodwin, Wm. Leman, Major General Harrison, Edmund Prideaux Attorney General, Sir Thomas Withrington, John Carey, Sir John Boucher, Sir John Trevor, Lieutenant General Fleetwood, Henry Darley, Thomas Lister, Wm. Cawley, Walter Strickland, Nicolas Love, Robert Reynolds Solicitor General, Wm. Say, John Fielder.
Which being but Nineteen in Number; they presented these Three Persons, who had an equal Number of Votes; viz. Sir William Brereton, George Thompson, Earl of Pembroke.
Which being read;
The first Nineteen were each of them put to the Question, in Order, as they were presented.
And thereupon it was Resolved, That Richard Salwey be one of the Council of State for the Year ensuing.
Resolved, That Alderman Allein be one of the Council of State for the Year ensuing.
Resolved, That Mr. Robert Goodwyn be one of the Council of State for the Year ensuing.
Resolved, That Mr. Wm. Leman be one of the Council of State for the Year ensuing.
Resolved, That Major General Harrison be one of the Council of State for the Year ensuing.
Resolved, That Edmund Prideaux Attorney General be one of the Council of State for the Year ensuing.
Resolved, That Sir Thomas Widdrington Knight, Serjeant at Law, be one of the Council of State for the Year ensuing.
Resolved, That John Carew Esquire be one of the Council of State for the Year ensuing.
Resolved, That Sir John Bourchier be one of the Council of State for the Year ensuing.
Resolved, That Sir John Trevor Knight be one of the Council of State for the Year ensuing.
Resolved, That Lieutenant General Fleetwood be one of the Council of State for the Year ensuing.
Resolved, That Henry Darley Esquire be one of the Council of State for the Year ensuing.
Resolved, That Thomas Lister Esquire be one of the Council of State for the Year ensuing.
Resolved, That Wm. Cawley Esquire be one of the Council of State for the Year ensuing.
Resolved, That Walter Strickland Esquire be one of the Council of State for the Year ensuing.
Resolved, That Nicholas Love Esquire be one of the Council of State for the Year ensuing.
The Question being put, That Robert Reynolds Esquire be one of the Council of State for the Year ensuing.
It passed with the Negative.
Resolved, That Wm. Say Esquire be one of the Council of State for the Year ensuing.
Resolved, That John Fielder Esquire be one of the Council of State for the Year ensuing.
After which, the Three other Names presented were written in several Papers, of equal Bigness; which were close rolled up, and put into a Glass together: And Mr. Speaker took out one of them, wherein the Name of George Thompson Esquire was written.
And the Question being put;
It was Resolved, That George Thompson Esquire be one of the Council of State for the Year ensuing.
The next Paper taken out had the Name of Sir Wm. Brereton.
And the Question being put, That Sir Wm. Brereton be one of the Council of State for the Year ensuing;
The House was divided.

So it was Resolved, That Sir Wm. Brereton be one of the Council of State for the Year ensuing.
Resolved, That Gualter Frost Esquire be Secretary to the Council of State.
Resolved, That all the Instructions given to the Council of State for the Year now last past be presented to the House To-morrow Morning; to be taken into Consideration, the first Business; nothing to intervene.
