Abstract

George and Richard Greaves were cited to appear before the Court of Chivalry on 8 February 1638 by Bradshawe for scandalous words provocative of a duel. On 20 October 1638 there was reference to Dr Duck being required to prove the libel and to a possible agreement between the parties; but no further proceedings survive. Summary of proceedings

Dr Duck acted as counsel for Bradshawe and Dr Exton for Greaves. On 20 October 1638 Dr Duck was required to prove the libel. There was also a note in the margin suggesting that a settlement may have been reached between the two parties: 'concordat Mr Latham'. However, there was no further reference to such an agreement.

There was a George Greaves of Hill juxta Stanton [now Stanton-in-the-Peak], co. Derby, the younger brother to John Greaves (b.1607), and mentioned in G. D. Squibb (ed.), The Visitation of Derbyshire, 1662-1664 (Publications of the Harleian Society, new series, 8, 1989).
