Private Secretaries to Secretaries c. 1812-1870

In the early nineteenth century, and probably from a much earlier period, it was the established practice for the Secretaries to select Treasury Clerks as their Private Secretaries. Before 1812 the Clerks in question appear to have received no salaries or allowances as such. From that year additional salaries of £150 were made available for those serving as Private Secretaries to the two Joint Secretaries and the Assistant Secretary. (fn. 1) The office of Private Secretary to the Assistant Secretary was abolished in 1856 but revived in 1859. (fn. 2) From 1857 the Parliamentary Secretary also had the services of an Assistant Private Secretary. (fn. 3)
