For mandate to the judges or executors deputed by the pope to confer on him the reserved deanery of Glasgow to make provision of it to him, inasmuch as William de Grenlaw, who was bound to resign it on obtaining a canonry and prebend of the same, still holds it, together with the archdeaconry of Glasgow; notwithstanding that Michael has a canonry and prebend of Brechin, value 2 marks. Whereas, on behalf of John de Alchawe, the pope was petitioned for confirmation of the church of Snodelond, in the diocese of Rochester, collated to him and the ordinary by Way of exchange, notwithstanding that someone by virtue of letters of pope Innocent accepted the said church, and prosecuted his right in the Roman court, where he afterwards died, and whereas surrogation was not prayed for the letters of confirmation cannot pass the chancery, the pope therefore is now prayed to order the letters to pass with surrogation, if necessary.

The church of Argyle, in which is the said archdeaconry, is distant a a day's journey from that of Dunkeld, and the dioceses are conterminous; the said John knows the language and idioms of both, and speaks them well; he is present in the Roman court, where he was the pope's scholar. Whereas the archdeaconry of his church, value 40 marks, was given by him, in the time of Innocent VI. to Maurice son of Peter, and whereas he doubts whether it was reserved to the pope, or lapsed to the apostolic see, the pope is prayed to confirm the said collation, notwithstanding that Maurice has a canonry of Cashel, from which he gets nothing, and which he is prepared to resign, and a canonry and prebend of Ardfert, value 50 gold florins.

John Chandos, viscount of St. Sauveur, and constable of Aquitaine. On behalf of his clerk, John de Stratford, scholar of canon law, for the canonry and prebend of Salisbury, value, according to the taxation of the tenth, 17l. but according to common estimate 27l. which Forcenarius de Calvomonte is bound to resign on getting the priory and a canonry and prebend of St. Radegund's, Poitiers, notwithstanding that John has the church of Chilmark, value 13l. 6s. 8d. and a canonry of Exeter, with expectation of a prebend, which last he is ready to resign.

Roger Payn. For confirmation of the canonry of Crediton, and a prebend styled ‘Bursary,’ granted to him by the pope on their being lapsed to the apostolic see, notwithstanding that they are detained by a certain John who holds another prebend in the same church; and in the papal letters Roger is described as having studied arts and civil law at Oxford for five years, whereas it is now five years since he studied civil law, which he did study for four years.

For licence to build a chapel, with bells and other requisites, within the said college, and have it dedicated, and therein by seculars and regulars to have celebrated masses and other divine offices, the sacrament of the Eucharist administered, oblations received, and bodies buried, without prejudice to the rights of the diocesan and others.

The hospital for poor and lepers of St. Batholomew, Tweedmouth, in the diocese of Durham. Whereas it has been devastated by incursions of the Scots, and its rents and profits are no longer enough to repair the buildings, the master, John Lowyck, has provided of his own goods a little fishing vessel to fish in the sea, on whose shore the hospital stands, for the sustenance of the brethren and the infirm; and whereas the masters of the hospital have not paid tithes to any other church of the lands of the hospital, nor of their other goods, nor of oblations offered in their oratory, nor have any been demanded, and whereas the prior and convent of Halleland (Lindisfarne), pretending that the hospital is in their parish, now demand tithes of the fisheries, though they do not presume to exact them on other goods, the pope is prayed to grant them exemption. Edward, king of England. Whereas by reason of personal citations issued in the Roman court against clerks and laymen of the realm, it happens that the king and nobles are disturbed, and complaint has been made in the parliaments of the realm touching the same, and whereas those Englishmen at whose instance the said citations have been made, have been moved by rancour rather than by desire to get their rights, so that it is easy for simple and suspected witnesses who have causes in the said court to make false depositions in the absence of the parties, whereby such personal citations are issued to the grievance of those cited, and the disturbance of the king and realm; the king, in order to put a stop to such scandals and dangers, prays the pope to order that hereafter when any shall proceed either by word or writing against any of the said nation, before the citation be issued, the matter shall be committed for examination to the cardinals of Boulogne, Pampeluna, Limoges, and Carcassonne, and enquiry made of approved and competent Englishmen, on whose testimony the matter in hand may be determined.

Whereas Henry Ingelby, an undergraduate, is rector of Halghton, in the diocese of Durham, value 100 marks, and canon and prebendary of Cave in York, value 160 marks, and canon and prebendary of Castre in Lincoln, value 68 marks, and canon and prebendary of Southwell, the pope is prayed to remove him from the canonry and prebend of Castre, and to give them to John, notwithstanding that he has the church of Kirby Misperton, in the diocese of York, value 55 marks.

John Gilberti, bachelor of theology at Oxford, a Friar Preacher born abroad (forinatus). Whereas between the friars of his order, and the chancellor and masters of the said university, a question was prosecuted by him on the part of his order in the Roman court and in England, whereby he incurred the enmity of the chancellor, masters, and scholars, and was unable to study there and be promoted to scholastic degrees, he prays to be allowed to study theology in the schools of the order at the university of Paris, so as to take his bachelor's degree, and in the following year to incept in the faculty of theology.

For the hospital of Schirborn, in the diocese of Durham, to be void by the deprivation of Alan de Schetelington, rector of Heminburgh, in the diocese of York, value 160 marks, and chaplain or master of the said hospital, value 86 marks, and canon and prebendary of York, value 40 marks, which he, having no scholastic degree, holds contrary to papal monition against plurality; notwithstanding that Wandsworth expects a benefice in the gift of the archbishop of York, which he is ready to resign.

The pope is prayed to declare valid the processes heard by the archbishop of Naples, auditor of the papal palace, instituted by Robert called ‘de Preston,’ canon and prebendary of All Saints, Derby, and rector of Whethamstede, against Geoffrey Scrop and John de Belmers, canons of Lincoln, and Roger de Sutton and others, also those against William de Arderne, intruded into the said canonry and prebend, and others, heard by J. Robinelli, auditor of the papal palace, touching injuries, imprisonment, losses, and violence inflicted on the said Robert; the validity of the aforenamed processes having been brought into doubt on their further hearing before B. de Bosqueto under papal commission, whom the pope is prayed to order to proceed in the hearing and deciding of the same.
The aforesaid processes are to hold good as if they had been signed by me; provided the vice-chancellor signed them. Avignon, 15 Kal. Nov.
