His brother Humphrey Hastanges held and holds the archdeaconry of Coventry and a canonry of Lichfield by royal donation after the death of John, cardinal Gaetani, and the prebend of Longedon, in the said church by exchange with John Geraudi, who held it by royal donation, on the death of cardinal Luke de Flisco; but since Humphrey makes a point of conscience about the retention of the archdeaconry and prebend, though many think that royal donations are lawful, the said baron and steward prays the pope to make provision to his brother Humphrey of the said canonry, archdeaconry, and prebend, and to remit fruits already received; notwithstanding that he has canonries and prebends of Lincoln, and in the collegiate churches of Stafford and Penkenth, in the diocese of Lichfield. John XXII. gave to Master John Pictoris, at the instance of the chapter, the canonry and prebend of Stratforde, void by the death of Nicholas de Lodelowe, but as in the letters of gift, by a mistake of the writer, it was said that the fruits of the prebend were taxed at 5 marks instead of 5l. they pray the pope to order the correction to be made; notwithstanding that John has the parish church of St. Thomas, Salisbury. Signification that he has held the office of prior in many convents, is confessor of the earl of Derby, and other earls, barons, and. ladies in divers dioceses, that divers prelates bring to him their cases, and license him to hear confessions, because he is not in their dioceses; wherefore he prays for faculties like those of bishops to hear confessions and enjoin penances throughout the realm. (f. 6d.) Richard, bishop of Durham. Signification that in his diocese is a fat (pinguis) parish church called Hoghton, which, when void, has been collated by bishops of Durham, at the instance of kings and queens of England, to courtiers, insufficient and light persons who turn the income to lascivious and profane uses, and since, when it becomes void, the said Richard will have to do the same, he desires that the income shall be spent on the increase of divine worship and the good of the state in those parts, which need lettered men; that is to say, that a perpetual vicarage be instituted, value 70 marks, with which the vicar is to undertake to support all expenses, and that with the remainder there shall be instituted five prebends, one of which shall be held by one who shall be called rector or prebendary, and to whom the present rector's manse shall be assigned, and who, out of his prebend, shall pay yearly 100s. apiece to four perpetual chaplains, who shall pray for the pope and the said Richard, and for the souls of all faithful departed; and the four other prebends, each of the value of 25 marks shall be assigned to four clerks and scholars who shall study, two of them theology, and two canon and civil law, until each in his faculty gets a doctor's degree; the bishop therefore prays the pope to grant faculties to himself, the prior, and the archdeacon of Durham to carry out the above scheme. Laurence de Sancto Brioco, of the monastery of St. Stephen's, Caen, was formerly presented by the abbot of the said monastery to the ordinary, and instituted to the priory of Frampton, in the diocese of Salisbury, and ruled it praise-worthily, making reforms and repairs, and restoring to it rights and property that had been taken from it during the wars. The bishop therefore prays the pope, considering the above, and also the heavy losses, both in temporals and spirituals, which it and many other priories have suffered by the recall of their alien priors, to confirm the presentation to the said Laurence.
