" 80 G. de Northone, insert in margin, acting December 20, 1297 [Letter Book B, fo. 106 (xxxii. b)] See footnote 6c, p. 378.

[There is some difficulty as to the exact date when Sir R. de Basing ceased to be an Alderman. He was present at a meeting of Aldermen on July 26, 1297 [Letter Book B, fo. 106 b (xxxii.)] and again on November 30th, 1297 [fo. 103 b (xxxv.)] when his successor (Northone) was also present. On August 26 in the same year Northone had been in attendance but not Basing (Lib. Cust. fo. 43 b). In the record of the November meeting he is described as Sir Robert de Basinge, citizen and knight, his name standing by itself and preceding those of the undoubted Aldermen: it seems certain that he was not actually an Alderman of a Ward then, but was permitted to attend the meetings of the Court, and I think this was also the case at the earlier date; see p. 250 for a similar instance of an ex-Alderman (H. le Waleys) being present at a Court]

Page 112 Add Note A.—There is no direct evidence to show that N. Hauteyn, whose Aldermanic service only extended over a few weeks, was Alderman of Coleman Street Ward, but there was no other vacancy in the the year 1298 which he could have filled, as of the five Aldermen (other than himself) elected that year, three (Refham, Leyre and Honilane) were present with him at a Court of Aldermen on June 13, 1298 [Letter Book B, fo. 94 (xxxix.)] and therefore no one of them could have been his successor, whilst Norhamton (see Note A, p. 43) remained an Alderman until the late summer or autumn of 1299. Hence the remaining one, Pycot, who was Alderman of Coleman Street as early as August 3, 1298, must have been the successor of Hauteyn.
