Black Horse Yard, Aldgate High Street

North out of Aldgate High Street, between Nos. 34 and 35, turning north-east into Middlesex Street (P.O. Directory). In Portsoken Ward.

Former names : "White Horse Alley" (O. and M. 1677-Hatton, 1708). "Red Cross Court" (1720, Strype, I. ii. 28).

It seems to have borne its present name since 1746.

Black Lion Yard, St. Thomas Apostle

Near St. Thomas Apostle in 1634 (L. and P. Chas. I. 1634-5, p. 283).

Named after the Black Lyon Inn, Gt. St. Thomas Apostle (q.v.).

Black Lyon (The)

A messuage in the street called Candelwicke Streete, in the parish of Blessed Mary Abchurch, 25 Eliz. (Lond. I. p.m. III. 68).

Black Lyon Inn

On the south side of Great St. Thomas Apostle, in Vintry Ward (O, and M. 1677-Strype, 1755).

The site has been rebuilt and is occupied by offices, etc.

On the east side of Bell Alley or Back Alley, London Wall Street over against Swan Alley. In Broad Street Ward not far from the boundary of Coleman Street Ward (Strype, ed. 1720, I. ii. 131).

Black Raven

On the west side of Bishopsgate, No. 136. In Bishopsgate Ward Without. Contains an old-fashioned staircase.

There is a 17th-century token of the Black Raven and an old handbill relating to the house is dated 1791 (N. and Q. (1911) 11th S. III. p. 2).

Black Raven Alley

West out of Coleman Street, near London Wall. In Coleman Street Ward (Hatton, 1708-Strype, 1755).

Black Raven Alley

South out of Upper Thames Street at No.104 (P.O. Directory). Near Fishmongers' Hall. In Bridge Ward Within.

First mention : 1574. Messuage in the alley devised to the Fishmongers for the use of the parish of St. Michael, Crooked Lane (End. Ch. 1903, p.11).

Its former name seems to have been "Puppes aley," 26 H. VI. (Hist. MSS. Com. 9th Rep. p. 16). "Popys alley," 33 H. VIII. (ib.).

At the latter reference mention is made of the Black Raven situate on the south side of Thames Street at the corner of "Popys alley" and bounded on the west by the common alleye.

Name derived from this tenement called the Black Raven.

East out of Seething Lane. In Tower Ward (Strype, 1720-O.S. 25 in. 1880). Called "Black Raven Court or Passage," in P.C. 1732-Boyle, 1799.

Seems in later times to have covered part at least of the site of "Black Dog Alley" (q.v.).

The Tower Ward Charity School, est. 1705, was in this street in 1846 (Maskell, p. 185).

Site now covered by Mark Lane station.
