Abstract

Midleton complained that on 6 August 1639 in the street in Southwark, Atlee told him that he was 'a base dishonest knave and a rascall' and that his 'credit was as good or better' than Midleton's. Process was granted on 14 September 1639 and Midleton entered bond on the 16^th; but no further proceedings survive.

'The petitioner is a gentleman descended of an ancient familie. One Roger Atlee of the parish of St Saviour in Southwarke, plumber, did one the sixt day of August last past publiquelie in the open streete in Southwarke, very much abuse your petitioner; and amongst other scandalous and provokinge speeches told your petitioner that he was a base dishonest knave and a rascall, and that his credit was as good or better then your peticoner's, together with divers other opprobrious speeches much provoking your petitioner to duell.'

Petitioned that Atlee be brought to answer.

Maltravers granted process on 14 September 1639.

Richard Middleton of St Saviour's parish, Southwark, gent, was the son of Arthur Middleton of London and Mary, daughter of John Kilburne of Saffron Walden, co. Essex. Richard married Joane, daughter of William Mathews of Reigate, co. Surrey.
