255 GREENE V HODGES

John Greene of Milton Clevedon, co. Somerset, esq v James Hodges of the same

November 1637

Abstract

Greene complained that when he demanded the £200 fine that he had been awarded from Hodges in the Court of Requests, Hodges called him a 'Base knave, lowsie knave, drunken knave, base rogue, drunken rogue and beggerley rogue'. Process was granted on 21 November 1637 and John Hungerford entered bond to prosecute the cause the following day; but no further proceedings survive.

'Your petitioner, having a suite depending in the Court of Requests against one James Hodges in the towne and county aforesaid, and having obteyned an order or decree, against Hodges for the some of two hundred poundes, he demanding of it, Hodges used these, or the like wordes following, Base knave, lowsie knave, drunken knave, base rogue, drunken rogue and beggerley rogue, and many other speeches tending to the disparidgment of your petitioner, and spoken by Hodges unto and against your petitioner.'

Petitioned that Hodges be brought to answer.

Duck desired Dethick to grant process, 21 November 1637.

Notes

John Greene of Milton was the son of Bartholomew Greene of Milton and Mary, daughter of John Eyres of Charfield, co. Wiltshire. John Greene married Sicile, daughter of John Walrond of Bovey, co. Devon. They had two sons and three daughters by the time of the visitation of 1623.
