Order to the sheriff of Warwick not to levy until further order any moneys of any of the lieges passing over a bridge in the town of Marton by Kenilworth castle for repair of the bridge [pontage], especially when the bridge is not in need of repair; as the king has learned that the bridge which was of old appointed for public passage of men of those parts, lately became so weak and ruinous that for its repair the sheriff did for a long time collect money from all lieges passing thereby with goods and merchandise; and John Middilton, late of London, who was born in that town, of his devotion and zeal and his compassion for poor passengers thereby for their discharge and peace caused in his lifetime the bridge to be new built of stone and lime, so that for a long while it will need no repair.
