Answer from the H. C.

Sir Edward Leech and Mr. Page return with this Answer from the House [ (fn. 1) of Commons:]

That they agree to the Ordinance concerning pressing of Ships for Ireland; and they agree that a Committee shall meet the Committee of Lords this Afternoon, in the Painted Chamber, as is desired: To all the rest of the Particulars, they will send an Answer by Messengers of their own.

Hawes's Cause.

Upon hearing the Counsel on both Sides, between Anne Hawes Widow &c. Plaintiffs, and Nic. Hawes Defendant: It is Ordered, That there be a new Trial with all Speed, and Markham, &c. to be made Parties; and that Nic. Hawes do give good Security for such Mean Profits in the mean Time as this House upon Hearing shall think fit to allow.

And it is Ordered, That the Earl of Manchester, E. Lyncolne, Lord Wharton, Lord Willoughby, and Lord North, shall draw up the Order according to the Debate of the House, and bring it to this House on Friday Morning next.

And Mr. Justice Reeves and Mr. Baron Atkins to be Assistants.

Message from the H.C. that they agree to the Order about Oxford;

A Message was brought from the House of Commons, by Mr. Whitlocke, &c.

To let their Lordships know, that they have agreed to Ordinance sent down to them, to prevent the seizing the Mathematical Instruments and Books at Oxford, with a Proviso. (Here enter it.)

about the Committee concerning the Great Seal;

2. They agree to the reducing of the Quorum of the Committees concerning the Great Seal; and their Committee will be ready to meet at any Time.

and with an Ordinance and Order.

3. To desire Concurrence in an Ordinance concerning the India Company.

4. An Order concerning the Duty for Algier, wherein they desire Concurrence.

That this House agrees to the Ordinance concerning the Books, &c. at Oxford: To all the rest of the Particulars, this House will send an Answer by Messengers of their own.

Bodvell's Cause.

Ordered, That Mr. Bodvill's Cause shall be put off till Friday Morning next.

Alderman Fowkes and the E. I. Co.

Ordered, That Mr. Alderman Fouke's Cause against the India Company shall be heard on Wednesday next come Sevennight.

Ordinance to prevent the Committee of Oxford from seizing any of the Libraries, &c. belonging to any of the Masters, Students, &c. of the University.

"Whereas it is conceived, by the Masters, Readers, Professors, Scholars, and Officers, of the University of Oxon (in regard of the unhappy Condition the said University was lately in), that Seizure and Sale will be made of the Libraries, and Books, Mathematical Instruments, and other Things necessary for their Studies, to the great Discouragement of Learning, and the Undoing of that ancient and famous University: It is Ordered and Ordained, by the Lords and Commons in Parliament assembled, That no Seizure, Sale, or Alienation, shall be made, by any Committee within the said County, nor by any other Person whatsoever, of any Libraries, Books, Mathematical Instruments, Globes, and other Necessaries belonging to the Chambers of any Master, Reader, Professor, Scholar, or Officer, within the said University, or any of them, until the Pleasure of both Houses shall be further signified therein: Provided always, and be it Ordained, That the Committee for Sequestrations in the said County of Oxon do and shall take Inventories of the Libraries, Books, (fn. 2) Mathematical Instruments, Globes, and other Necessaries, belonging to the Chambers of any the Masters, Readers, Professors, Scholars, and Officers, in the said University, which are liable to Sequestration; and leave the same, so inventoried, in the several Hands of the Persons with whom they do now remain, to be made Use of by them; they respectively giving Security to the said Committee, that the said Libraries, Books, Mathematical Instruments, Globes, and other the Necessaries as aforesaid, shall not be embezzled; but shall be forthcoming, to be disposed of at the Pleasure of both Houses of Parliament."
