[f. 198] Acquittances of several parishes

1038. First Acquittance: this indenture witnesseth that, since Peter de Weston, potter and citizen, owes to Holy Trinity 34s. 4d. p.a. viz. for a tenement which Robert de Raughtone held in the parish of St. Botolph without Algate 3s. 6d.; for a tenement which Peter himself held in the same parish of the prior and convent for a term of years 10s.; for a tenement formerly of Robert de Kelseye within Alegate in the parish of Holy Trinity the Great 11s. 2d.; for part of a tenement leased to Robert Panifader afterwards to Richard atte Waye in the same parish 20d.; and for part of a tenement once leased to Henry in le Lane in the parish of St. Mary atte Ax opposite the church of St. Augustine Papie namely in the corner there 8s.; the prior has been fully satisfied of all arrears outstanding on the day of the making of this document viz. £17 13s. 9d. by the melting down of a certain bell (infusione cuiusdam campane) together with the rent due to Michaelmas 1353; sealed by both parties; witnesses, John de Romeneye, John de Stowe, potter, John de Neul(i)n, Walter de Constentyn, William Daniel, Thomas Savage, clerk, Simon de Thotenhale; given at London 1 Aug. 1345.

1039. Second Acquittance: this indenture witnesseth that Nicholas prior and convent on the day of the making of this document have received from Margery widow of Thomas Broun £3 17s. 2d. in payment of all arrears from three tenements of an annual rent of 10 marks coming from the tenement of the late Thomas Cavendisch in the parish of St. Mary Colechurch and a rent of 53s. 4d. [f. 198v] from the tenement of the late John de Enefeld in the parish of Holy Trinity the Great and a rent of 2s. from a tenement of the late Adam Rokesle in the parish of St. Dunstan; and that all the arrears are cleared to Michaelmas last past; sealed counterparts; given at London 28 Oct. 1357.

1040. Third Acquittance: this indenture witnesseth that Nicholas prior and convent received on 26 Dec. 1363 the sum of 18d. of a certain annual rent from a tenement then empty from John son of Symon formerly held by Reginald de Conductu situated in the parish of St. Dunstan in the East in Menchunlane between the tenement of John Cory on the south and that of Peter Sterre on the north and also 2s. of a certain annual rent from a tenement of the said John son of Symon called Weuel atte Stone in the parish of All Hallows Barking, by the hands of Thomas de Appulby, rector of St. Olave, collector of the aforesaid rents deputed by the king, which tenements were formerly of Reginald de Conductu and which at present are in the king's hands for wool carried to Durdraght in Reginald's name; sealed counterparts; given at London the year abovesaid.

1041. Fourth Acquittance: this indenture witnesseth that Nicholas prior and convent received of Ralph de Cantebregg and Walter Forster, executors of the late Thomas Legg, late citizen and alderman of London, £10 10s. 10d. in payment of all [f. 199] arrears from four tenements once of the said Thomas viz. from a certain annual rent of 20s. 4d. and from his tenement newly built in the parish of St. Peter Cornhill; (fn. 1) 3s. p.a. from his tenement formerly of Walter Euere in the parish of St. Bartholomew the Less; 8s. 4d. p.a. from a tenement in the market called le Goot in the parish of All Hallows Honey Lane; 2s. p.a. from his tenement once of Nicholas Reygate in the parish of St. Lawrence Jewry; and that all arrears are cleared to Michaelmas last past; sealed counterparts; 28 Oct. 1357.

1042. Fifth Acquittance: this indenture witnesseth that William prior and convent received of Katherine atte Pole 40s. in payment of all arrears from two tenements; 8s. p.a. for a certain rent from her tenement which she holds of the priory in the parish of St. Michael de Paternostercherch in la Riole; 8s. p.a. from her tenement in the parish of St. Benet Paul's Wharf; and that all arrears are cleared to Michaelmas last past; sealed counterparts; given at London 1 Nov. 1379; [f. 199v] witnesses, John Y(u)e, rector of St. Michael Wood Street, William Rykel, William Creswik, Richard Rose.

1043. Sixth Acquittance: This indenture witnesseth that, since on Fri. 29 Mar. 1325 a dissension had arisen between the prior of Holy Trinity and Stephen Ashwy, kt., concerning £16 17s. 8d. which the prior said was in arrears from the tenement of the said Stephen in the parish of St. Mary Aldermanbury which tenement owed 26s. 8d. p.a. to Holy Trinity and another tenement formerly of William Boconit(is) son of Sabelina situated between the tenement of the said Stephen, which John Walter de Blecchinggeleye held on the east and that of Stephen which John de Burgeyn held on the west, which owed 40s. p.a. and which is in Cheap in the parish of All Hallows Honey Lane, the dissension was settled as follows: the prior remitted to Stephen £7 of the £16 17s. 8d. and he paid the remainder to the prior or his attorney the arrears to Christmas last past, he paid in instalments, 17s. 8d. at the next Easter, 60s. at St. John Baptist, 60s. at Michaelmas and 60s. at next Christmas; sealed counterparts; at London, the above date.

1044. Seventh Acquittance: this indenture witneseth that William prior of Holy Trinity has received from Richard abbot and convent of the abbey of St. Egwin at Evesham 65s. 4d. arrears for one year from divers tenements of the said abbey in London [f. 200] viz. 53s. 4d. p.a. from their principal tenement called le Abbotesyn once held by Margery Broun in the parish of St. Katherine Cricherch and 10s. p.a. from a tenement of the said abbot with a certain alley (aleia) called Kelshillisaleye in the same parish once held by the said Margery and 2s. p.a. for another tenement once held by Margery in the parish of St. Dunstan East by the Tower; and that all arrears are cleared; sealed counterparts; 25 June 1426 [28 lines blank, ff. 200v–201 blank].

1045. [f. 201 v] Memorandum: that 14 May 1441 was born to a certain [blank ? wife] of the lord de Be(u)amont a daughter within the limits of the church of St. Botolph, a church appropriated to the prior and convent of Holy Trinity and the lord came and said that he was a parishioner of that parish and he asked the sub-prior to what extent one of the canons could baptize the child within the monastery of St. Mary Graces and he was asked to withdraw as he was infringing the parochial rights in this, (fn. 2) there being present at the time Simon Campe, esquire, Ralph Prestbury, doctor of canon law (decretorum doctore), Hugh Cardugan, Edward Lymesay, gentleman, John Rouse and many others.

1046. Note: on 9 Feb. 1340 Thomas Heron, prior of Holy Trinity, died, on which day at the request of the sub-prior and convent, John de St. Pol (de Sancto Paulo) for the chancellor (vice cancellarius) with the agreement of John de Stradford (fn. 3) then archbishop of Canterbury announced in parliament[?] (in communi parliamento) that the sub-prior and convent should have the custody of the priory in the form contained in the following.

1047. Letters patent of Edward III, for a fine of 20 marks paid by the subprior and convent, that they shall have the custody of the priory during the vacancy due to the death of brother Thomas Heron with all the goods etc. together with the rents collected from the time of the vacancy if it continues for a month or less but if the vacancy lasts for more than one month, then they shall pay 20 marks a month to the exchequer and pro rata; the escheator, sheriff and any other bailiff or official is forbidden to interfere in the affairs of the priory during the vacancy; witness Edward duke of Cornwall and earl of Chester, our dearest son, custodian of England, at Kenyngton 19 Feb. 1340.

1048. [f. 202] Note: it is recorded on Roll 6 in the exchequer that the subprior and convent gave 20 marks as a fine to have the custody of the priory on the resignation (per cessionem) of brother Roger Poley which custody the king granted 5 June 1331 [as above in 1047]; enrolled on the Originalia Rolls of 5 Ed. III.

1049. Note: in the Great Roll (in magno rotulo) of 4 Hy. VI, the sub-prior and convent owe to the king for the custody of the priory for the next vacancy (in proxima vacacione) after 5 Feb. 1393, 20 marks per month at the exchequer, which priorship fell vacant 4 Aug. 1407 on the death of Robert Exceter as is contained in the account of Richard Whityngton, former mayor and escheator of the City for the year from 28 Oct. 1406 to 28 Oct. 1407 and was vacant until 22 Sep. when the king received the fealty of William Harynton a canon of the house elected to the priorship and returned the temporalia to him as appears on Roll 11 of 8 Hy. IV; (fn. 4) payment due £23 16s. 2½d.

1050. Note: that the sub-prior and convent were summoned to pay but they replied that Richard Whitington had accounted in his escheator's accounts for £23 16s. 2½d. [f. 202v blank: f. 203 is blank except for the signature 'Stephanus Batman' written twice at the head of the folio, the second time in a (poor) Anglo-Saxon script.]
