794. Grant of John prior and convent to Richard Hadestok, chaplain, of land with two houses in the parish of St. Mary del Ax; abutments, the land of the nuns of St. Helen on the south and on the north and the land of William Som(er) on the west and the king's street on the east containing in length 29 ells and in width along the land of William Somer 12½ ells 2 ins. and at the east end 13 ells; to hold to Richard and to whomsoever he wishes to assign it; rent 2s. 6d. p.a.; gersuma 50s.; [f. 138v] sealed counterparts; done in June 1252; witnesses, Adam de Basyng, mayor, Nicholas Bat, Laurence Frowyk, sheriffs.

791 contd. Richard de Hadestok; the prior of Wenlok who had from Emma la Ruse two lands adjacent in the parish of St. Augustine and St. Mary Axe at a rent of 4s. 6d. as appears by the following plea.

795. Plea held in the Husting, Mon. 10 Feb. 1360.

The prior by his attorney, Alan de Horewode, seeked against the prior of Wenlok a garden and says that the prior holds of him in the parishes of St. Augustine and St. Mary Axe at a rent of 4s. 6d. p.a. and that the rent was 22s. 6d. in arrears on the day of the suing out of the writ, 18 Feb. 1359, for five years past and the garden was not distrainable for a year and a day and he seeks as gavelet; the prior of Wenlok by his attorney, John de Morton, does not recognise that the garden is held of Holy Trinity and says that John, a former prior of Holy Trinity, granted it to him by charter [incomplete].

796. Indenture which witnesseth that Henry prior of Wenlok leased at farm to Richard de Putford and Margaret his wife a certain garden in the parishes of St. Mary at Ax and St. Augustine Paphay within Bisshopsgate; to hold the garden from 2 Feb. 1363 for the term of their lives and to the survivor; rent 10s. p.a. and 4s. 6d. p.a. to the prior of Crystchurch [Holy Trinity]; the lessees to repair the walls of the garden and maintain them at their own cost; if the rent of 14s. 6d. is unpaid one month after either term of payment, the prior of Wenlok is allowed to enter and distrain until the rent is paid and to repossess the holding; given in the chapel of Wenlok on the above date.

797. [f. 139] Note: John le Brevetur son of William de Chyngelford, bequeathed to Auger son of Henry Godhewe 2s. p.a. of quit rent during his lifetime after the death of Auger, he bequeathed it to Holy Trinity as appears in John's will (fn. 1) enrolled 11 Ed. I and the executors of John granted the tenement itself to William de Haddon who paid 2s. as appears by a charter (fn. 2) enrolled 11 Ed. I.

798. [1258–9] Grant of John prior and convent to Thomas de St. Edmund of land with houses; abutments, the land of John Portar on one side and the land of Katherine widow of Moses on the other extending from the land of William Bray to the king's street called Seyntmaristrete and containing in length 25 ells and 1 in. and in width 13 ells less 3 ins.; rent 6s. p.a.; warranty not to pull down or deteriorate the houses but to maintain them; if the grantee or his heirs wish to sell, the prior and convent to have the preference by a bezant of 2s.; gersuma 20s. and 2s. for pittances; chirograph sealed; witnesses, William son of Richard, mayor, Henry de Coventre, Adam Bruning, sheriffs.

799. [List of those paying rent]: Thomas de St. Edmund who granted the tenement to William de Haddam who paid 6s. as appears by charter (fn. 3) enrolled 9 Ed. I and so William paid 8s. p.a. for the two tenements which were adjacent; Thomas Coberd called de Leycestria; Henry I(s)lelane, 1 and 19 Ed. II and 1 Ed. III; Peter de Weston, 6 Ed. III as appears by Acquittance One (fn. 4) of several parishes; John Trompton, 30 Ed. III; Alice Trompton, 48 Ed. III; Thomas David, 8 Ric. II; Walter Gautrun, 11 Hy. IV and the two tenements are situated adjacent on the east side of Seyntmarystrete between the tenement of the late Moses de Waltham and now of John Howham on the south and the king's street on the north and the west.

800. [1222–48] Grant of Richard prior and convent to Moses de Waltham and Katherine his wife of land in the parish of St. Mary; abutments, the land of the canons themselves on the south and that of Oliva, daughter of Robert de Dacia on the north; rent 2s. 6d. p.a.; [f. 139v] the grantees not to pledge to Jews or religious; the prior and convent to have the preference by a bezant of 2s.; gersuma 30s.; witnesses, Norman 'le Meguser', Nicholas 'le Meguser', John de Wares, Clement de Joye, John de Waltham.

I; Henry Godhewe, 1 Ed. III; Denise Plomer or Virly, 6 and 30 Ed. III; John Frytmonger, 33 Ed. III; John Helpiston, 48 Ed. III; his widow, 8 Ric. II; William Man, 1 and 6 Hy. IV; John Hooham, 10 Hy. IV and this tenement is situated on the east side of Seyntmaristrete between the tenement once of Thomas de St. Albans now of Walter Gautrun on the north and the tenement belonging to the sacristan of Holy Trinity on the south.

802. [1261–8] Grant by Gilbert prior and convent to Asketin de Halsted, 'meguzer' [whittawer] of land with houses; abutments, the land formerly of the prior of Ware on the north and the land of Edmund Epping on the south containing in length 31½ ells 6 ins. and in width along the road at the west end 10¾ ells 2 ins. and at the east end 9¾ ells 3 ins.; rent 6s. p.a.; the grantee not to deteriorate but to maintain the houses; the prior and convent to have the preference by a bezant of 2s.; swore fealty; gersuma 15s. and 2s. for pittances; chirograph sealed; witnesses, John de Norhamtone, alderman of this ward, (fn. 6) Robert Coryngham.
