Monday, October 16. Present:—Earl of Halifax, Mr. Pitt, Mr. Grenville, Lord Dupplin, Mr. Fane.
Nova Scotia.
Reading the following letters and papers received from the
Honourable Edward Cornwallis, Esquire, Governor of Nova
Scotia, viz.:—
Letter from Colonel Cornwallis, Governor of Nova Scotia, to
the Board, dated at Chebucto, the 20th of August, 1749,
relating to his proceedings since his last, and transmitting:—
List of Civil Officers appointed at Chebucto, with their
salaries.
Copy of Colonel Cornwallis's declaration, in answer to
the letter from the French inhabitants of Nova
Scotia, dated at Chebucto, the 1st of August, 1749.
Copy of a letter to his Excellency, the Governor, from the
commandant of St. John's, in answer to his of the 9th
of July.
Letter from Colonel Cornwallis, Governor of Nova Scotia,
to the Board, dated at Chebucto, the 11th of September,
1749, relating to the present state of the province, and the
opposition of the French and Indians, and transmitting:—
Copy of a letter from the French inhabitants, delivered
to Colonel Cornwallis, the 7th September, 1749; and
also of the Governor's answer in Council to the
Deputies, dated the same day.
Account of the trial of Peter Carteel, a settler, at the
General Court held at Halifax, in the province of Nova
Scotia, the 31st of August, 1749, for the murther of
Abraham Goodsides.
Nova Scotia.
Ordered that the draught of a letter to the Lords Commissioners of his Majesty's Treasury be forthwith prepared, inclosing an extract of so much of the first of the above letters, as relates to the disposition made by Colonel Cornwallis of the provisions belonging to Mr. Alderman Baker, received from Louisbourg, and also to the provision made of barracks and other necessaries for the officers' lodgings, together with a copy of the list of the civil officers appointed by him and their respective salaries.
The draught of a letter to his Grace the Duke of Bedford, inclosing a copy of the last mentioned letter, and of the papers therewith received, and desiring his Grace to lay the same before his Majesty for his directions thereon, having been prepared, was laid before the Board, agreed to, transcribed and signed.
The draught of a letter to Colonel Cornwallis, in answer to several received from him, having been prepared, was laid before the Board, agreed to, transcribed and signed.
Tuesday, October 31. Present:—Lord Dupplin, Mr. Fane, Sir Thomas Robinson, Mr. Townshend.
South Carolina.
Read a letter from Mr. Glen, Governor of South Carolina, to
the Board, dated the 18th of June, 1749, signifying that he has
appointed James Graeme, Esquire, to be Chief Justice of that
province, in the room of Benjamin Whitaker, who has lately left
the province without the Governor's leave, and transmitting:—
A copy of the minutes of Council relating to the above affair.
Ordered that the draught of a letter to the Duke of Bedford, for inclosing to his Grace a copy of the said letter and proceedings of the Council, for his information, be prepared.
Read a letter from Mr. Glen, Governor of South Carolina, dated the 19th of July, 1749, transmitting his answer to the Board's general queries, being a full account of that province, under the sanction of the Governor, Council and Assembly.
Ordered that a letter to his Grace the Duke of Bedford be prepared, for inclosing to his Grace an extract of so much of the above-mentioned answer to queries, as relates to the situation of the Indians and their being supplied with arms, and to the transactions between Mr. Glen and the Governor of St. Augustin, on account of the protection given by him, the said Governor of St. Augustin, to slaves deserting from his Majesty's province.
Nova Scotia.
The draught of a letter to the Lords Commissioners of his Majesty's Treasury, for inclosing an extract of one from Colonel Cornwallis, his Majesty's Governor of Nova Scotia, and also a copy of a list of the civil officers appointed by him, having been prepared, pursuant to the minutes of the 16th instant, was laid before the Board, agreed to and ordered to be transcribed.
Barbados.
Mr. John Sharpe attending, moved their lordships that Samuel
Husbands and George Walker, Esquires, who have been recommended to their lordships in a late letter from Mr. Grenville,
Governor of Barbados, to be appointed of the Council in that
Island, in the room of Reynold Hooper and Thomas Applewaite,
deceased, might be represented to his Majesty as proper persons
for that station; at the same time he certified to the Board that
Barbados.
Mr. Stone, Secretary of the said Island, had revoked a deputation
given by him to said Samuel Husbands to be Clerk of the
Council, and had appointed another person.
Ordered that the draught of a representation to his Majesty be prepared, proposing the said Samuel Husbands and George Walker to be of the Council in Barbados, in the room of Reynold Hooper and Thomas Applewaite, Esquires, deceased.
Jamaica.
Ordered that the draught of a representation to his Majesty be prepared, proposing John Palmer and Samuel Long, Esquires, to be of the Council in the Island of Jamaica, in the room of John Stewart and William Williams, Esquires, both deceased.
Barbados.

The said draughts of representations to his Majesty having been prepared, were laid before the Board, agreed to, transcribed and signed.

Rhode Island.
Read a letter from Mr. West, Secretary to the Lords Commissioners of his Majesty's Treasury, dated the 7th of September, 1749, transmitting to this Board the Rhode Island account for paying the officers and soldiers raised in that colony for the intended expedition against Canada.
New York.
Mr. Catherwood, Secretary to George Clinton, Esquire, Governor
of New York, attending, acquainted their lordships that the
accounts of the said government, relative to the intended
expedition to Canada, had, in passing through some of the offices,
been lost or mislaid, but as the demands of the colonies for this
service were, as he was informed, before the Board for their
consideration, he thought it his duty to lay before their lordships
the following abstracts, relative to the accounts of Governor
Clinton, viz.:—
A list of Governor Clinton's accounts, delivered to Mr.
Potter, the 3rd February, 1749.
Extract of Governor Clinton's accounts with the Crown,
touching the late expedition against Canada.
List of the troops, raised for an expedition against Canada,
that were under the command of Governor Clinton.
Extract of a letter from the Duke of Newcastle to Governor
Clinton, dated 27th October, 1747.
Extract of a letter from his Grace the Duke of Newcastle
to Governor Shirley, dated the 3rd of October, 1747.

Governor Clinton was at among the Indians.
New Hampshire.
Read a letter from Captain Tomlinson, agent for New Hampshire, dated the 28th of October, 1749, inclosing the officers' pay roll of Colonel Atkinson's regiment for the Canada expedition.

Their lordships then proceeded to take into consideration the demands and accounts of the several Northern colonies of charges arisen therein, on the intended expedition to Canada, and a state thereof having been prepared, pursuant to the minutes of the 22nd of last June, was laid before the Board, who made some progress in the consideration thereof.

Ordered that the Secretary do write to Mr. West, Secretary to the Lords of the Treasury, to desire to know whether any demand has been made on the part of the Massachusets Bay for the charge of provisions and transports on the late intended expedition to Canada.
Ordered that the Secretary do write to Mr. Aldworth, Secretary to his Grace the Duke of Bedford, for extracts of so much of a letter from his Grace the Duke of Newcastle, dated the 9th of April, 1746, to the governors of the several colonies concerned in the intended expedition to Canada, as relate to the expences to be incurred on that service, and also a copy of the dismissions of the troops raised in the said colonies by Governor Shirley and Admiral Knowles.
Ordered that the Secretary do write to the Commissioners of his Majesty's Navy for an account of any Bills which may have been drawn upon them by Governor Clinton or Governor Shirley on account of the intended expedition to Canada.
