Draught of Representation.

A letter from Colonel Philipps, Governor of Nova Scotia, dated the 27th of the last month, wherein he acquaints their Lordships that the several facts alledged in Mr. Toshach's petition [folios 159, 165, 189], mentioned in the Minutes of the 18th of February last, were truly represented, was read, whereupon ordered that the draught of a representation be prepared on his said petition.

Their Lordships taking into consideration a letter from the Lord Viscount Townshend, dated the 20th, and mentioned in the Minutes of the 29th of April last, inclosing several extracts of letters from the Lord Glenorchy, Envoy Extraordinary at the court of Denmark, in relation to two new lighthouses set up on the coast of Norway [folios 97, 166], ordered that Mr. Astell be acquainted that the Board desire to speak with him to-morrow morning.

A letter from Mr. Barnes, dated at Amsterdam, the 23rd of April last, relating to his having received an order from the Lord Viscount Townshend to return to England [folios 54, 127], was read, whereupon ordered that the secretary prepare an answer thereto.

Letter from Mr. Burchet, complaint of Captaint St. Lo of men left at Newfoundland.

A letter from Mr. Burchet, dated the 4th of December, 1724, with a complaint of Captain St. Lo, relating to men left at Newfoundland by the fishing ships, contrary to Act of Parliament, was read, and their Lordships resolved to consider at another opportunity of proper methods to prevent the same.

Petition of Countess of Denbigh.

A letter from the Duke of Newcastle of the 27th of last month, referring to the Board a petition from the Countess of Denbigh and others, claiming certain lands in the Island of St. Christophers, was read, and their Lordships resolved to take the same into further consideration, when application shall be made for that purpose.

Letter from Mr. Gordon with memorial about Pera Plantation.

A letter from Mr. Gordon, at Barbados, to the Board, dated the 10th of March 1724–5, inclosing a memorial in relation to a claim he has to Pera Plantation, in Jamaica [folio 175], was read, as also

Memorial from Captain King about the Act concerning Pera Plantation.

Parties to attend.

The memorial of Thomas King, Esquire, praying for the confirmation of an Act for settling the said plantation, whereupon ordered that the several parties concerned have notice to attend the Board to-morrow sevennight, in order to lay before their Lordships what they may have further to offer on that subject.

Duties for two new lights on coast of Norway.

Mr. Astell, attending, as he had been desired, their Lordships had some discourse with him, in relation to the duties demanded for maintaining two new lights set upon the coast of Norway [folios 163, 168], and he informed their Lordships that he had consulted several people on that subject, and found that all nations were to pay like duties, and thought the only thing to be recommended to my Lord Glenorchy in that case, was to procure effectual orders that fires might be duly kept therein, for that otherwise they might be of dangerous consequence.

Mr. Astell being withdrawn, their Lordships ordered the draught of a letter to the Duke of Newcastle to be prepared upon that subject.

A letter from Mr. Norris, Mr. Wordsworth and Mr. Tomlinson, in answer to one writ them the 13th of February last, concerning the new regulation made in Sweden, whereby all vessels are prohibited from importing thither any goods other than the product of the respective countries to which they belong, was read, whereupon ordered that they be acquainted that the Board desire to speak with them thereupon on Tuesday morning next.

Acts and Papers about Indian Trade.

Reepresentation thereupon.

Their Lordships taking into consideration the Order in Council of 30th of April,. mentioned in the Minutes of 1st of May, 1724, referring to the Board a petition from several New York merchants against the renewing an Act, passed in New York in November, 1720, entituled, An Act for the encouragement of the Indian Trade, and rendring of it more effectual to the inhabitants of this province, and for prohibiting the selling of Indian goods to the French [folios 156, 176]; as also the Order in Council of 23rd of July, mentioned in the Minutes of the 5th of August last, directing copies of several papers on that subject to be transmitted to the Governor of New York, his answer thereto, and several other letters and papers on this subject, mentioned in the Minutes of the 5th and 12th of May last, gave some directions for preparing the draught of a representation thereupon.

Consideration put off.

Mr. Nivine and Mr. Huggins, attending, as they had been desired [folios 166, 179], as also Captain King and some other gentlemen, in relation to An Act, passed at Jamaica in December, 1722, entituled, An Act for encouraging the speedy settling of the Plantation commonly called Pero or Pera Plantation situate at Port Morant in the Parish of St. Thomas in the East in this Island, and for obliging all persons entituled to the equity of redemption thereof, to redeem the same by a prefixed time; Mr. Nivine, on behalf of Mr. Gordon, desired their Lordships would please, (Mr. Gordon's solicitor not being present), to defer the consideration of the said Act to Wednesday morning next, which their Lordships were pleased to agree to.

A letter from Mr. Shelton, secretary to the Lords Proprietors of Carolina, dated the 8th instant, in relation to the said Lords Proprietors having agreed with Monsieur John Peter Purry, for transporting twelve hundred natives of Switzerland into South Carolina, as desired by their petition to His Majesty, referred to the Board by His Grace the Duke of Newcastle's letter of 5th, mentioned in the Minutes of the 9th of June, 1724, was read, whereupon ordered the secretary make an answer to Mr. Shelton's said letter.

Act about Pera Plantations.

Captain King, and the Lady Cotton his wife, attending, as they had been desired [folios 175, 279], with Mr. Banks, in behalf of an Act, passed at Jamaica in December, 1722, for encouraging the speedy settling of the Plantation, commonly called Pero or Pera Plantation, situate at Port Morant in the Parish of St. Thomas in the East in this Island, and for obliging all persons entituled to the equity of redemption thereof, to redeem the same by a prefixed time; as also Mr. Nivine, with his solicitor, in behalf of Mr. Gordon of Barbados, against the said Act; Mr. Banks, in behalf of the Lady Cotton, desired their Lordships would please to report the said Act to His Majesty, in order to its confirmation; but Mr. Nivine acquainting their Lordships, that there was a suit in Chancery now depending between the said Mr. Gordon and Captain King, in relation to Pero Plantation, and he conceived, if their Lordships should confirm the said Act, it might put a stop to the proceedings in Chancery, their Lordships were pleased to resolve that the said Act should lye by, till that suit was determined in Chancery.

A letter from the Duke of Portland, dated the 12th of April, 1725, with copy of the proceedings at Jamaica on the condemnation of some French indigo seized there on board the ship Nassau, therein referred to, was read, whereupon ordered that Mr. Miranda be acquainted with the Board's desire of speaking with him upon this subject, this day sevennight, at eleven o'clock in the morning [folios 190, 266].
