A messuage in the parish of St. Magnus, sometime of John Hanin, similarly held, rendering yearly to the prior of Christ Church, Canterbury, 20s. and to the heirs of John Hanin 2 marks.
Alice aged 13, and Rose (Roesia) aged 10, daughters of Agnes daughter of the said Henry and Alice, are next heirs of the said Henry.

Answer by the escheator that whereas it is asserted in the writ that King Henry III granted the tenements abovesaid by charter to the said Henry, it seems to him that it was not for him to enquire of whom they were held, when the king by his writ testifies that they are now held of the king, and this ought to be contained in King Henry’s charter.

Bocton Allulph. George de Lavertone, on Wednesday the eve of the Circumcision, 21 Edw. I, married Joan de Oteringedene, and they lived together as man and wife until Monday the eve of St. Michael in the said year, on which day the said Joan died; during this time she was pregnant by the said George and at dawn (in aurora) on the day she died she gave birth to a daughter, after which she received the rites of the church and died; this daughter Andrew, rector of the church of Oteringedene, baptized in her mother’s chamber at Oteringedenne alive and crying, naming her Joan; her godfather was John de Wynefeld and her godmothers Eleanor de Sindisham and Aubrey de Stonacre; she lived until sun-rise of the same day and then died. The lands &c. in Bocton Allulph held by the said George and Joan were of the inheritance of the said Joan.

Perham. Robert de Valeyns, the elder, held the manor of Perham of John de Vaus in chief by knight’s service, which service after the death of the said John was assigned to William de Nerford and Petronilla his wife as her pourparty; and after the death of the said Robert they seized the manor by reason of this service and of the minority of Robert’s heir, and held the same for a fortnight and more, and held a court and received the fealty of the tenants, when the sub-escheator ejected them, seized the manor into the king’s hand, and delivered it to Robert, bishop of Bath and Wells. After the death of the said bishop Robert de Reydon, now sub-escheator, re-seized it and delivered it to the bishop’s executors, who now hold it.
Endorsed: The bishop’s executors came and said that this inquisition ought not to hurt them, because it was taken in their absence. Let a new inquisition be taken in their presence &c.

The wardship of the manor ought to pertain to the king if the heir of the said William and Petronilla were under age and in the king’s wardship, as wardship of wardship as of the honour of Richmond.

John de Danthorpp was son and heir of Sir John de Danthorpp, knight, who was son of Sir Alan de Danthorpp, knight. His mother was daughter of Sir Robert de Carlaton, knight.
Endorsed: The king has given 8l. to Adam his watchman (vigili), and let the idiot be maintained from lands which he has elsewhere.

Insken alias Inskyn. In the time of King John, Thomas de Molyns held the manor of the king in chief and enfeoffed thereof Jordan Dardiz, father of this Jordan, and his heirs, to hold of the king in chief; and he held it by service of 2 knights’ fees, viz. 2 marks, and suit at the king’s county (court) of Leueth: afterwards the said Jordan gave the manor to Richard de Haddesore by rendering to him 8 marks, but performed the suit and service himself by his attorneys, and died seised of the lordship of the manor; and he gave the 8 marks to his daughter Elizabeth. Richard de Hadesoure enfeoffed Nicholas archbishop of Armagh and his church of the manor for 8 marks yearly. Jordan the son, now deceased, died seised of the manor, which is held of the king in chief.

Sowe. A messuage, 60a. arable, 10a. waste, 5a. meadow, 32s. 5 1/2d. rent from 8 free tenants and 7 cottars, and 2s. pleas &c.
Hugh de Loges his father formerly held all the above, with the bailiwick of forester of Canok, of the king in chief by service of keeping the said forest, rendering 10 marks yearly at the king’s exchequer, and doing homage; but King Henry III took into his hand the said bailiwick and lands &c. on account of the said Hugh’s transgression, and the king has since committed the bailiwick with the burden of 10 marks to whom he wood, but restored all the tenements to the said Hugh by a fine made with the king.

Merston. A sixth part of a knight’s fee pertaining to the manor of Gatecumbe, comprising a capital messuage, 70a. land, pasture, and 40s. rent, whereof the said Geoffrey and Iseult and Baldwin their son were jointly enfeoffed, viz. to the said Geoffrey and his heirs, and to Iseult for life.

Endorsed: On a search of the rolls and memoranda of the exchequer it was not found that John de Bradele held anything of the king in chief by knight’s service or serjeanty, but that Ralph de Bradele, his ancestor, held of the king a fourth part of the towns of Bradele and Leysseby by a farm of 60s. to be paid yearly at the exchequer.

Wynterborn Fifheysse. The manor, held of the heirs of John de Burgo by service of a knight’s fee of Mortain, together with a tenement in Somerset called Lodehaye, which tenement the said William gave by charter to Humphrey de Keyl.
It is not known whether the heirs of John de Burgo have made partition of his fees or not. Immediately after the death of William de Stokes, Hawis de Grelle, who is one of the heirs of John de Burgo, and Walter son of Robert, another heir, came by their bailiffs and took seisin of the manor of Wynterborn Fifheysse, but the late escheator, by his sub-escheator removed the said bailiffs from their seisin, and took the manor into the king’s hand, because the said Walter son of Robert was a minor and in the king’s wardship. Afterwards the manor was demised by the king’s letters patent to Matthia, late the wife of William de Stokes until the lawful age of the heir of the said William de Stokes; and William Burdet for himself and Matthia his wife, was present at this inquiry and said that he had rendered seisin of the said manor to William, son and heir of William de Stokes, who now holds it.

III, and was 21 on that feast last past, and he remembers it because at the feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Mary following the said William’s birth he assumed the habit of religion in that priory, which will be 21 years ago at the said feast next coming.
William de Brunton agrees, and remembers it because King Henry died at the feast of St. Edmund next following the said birth, and he himself baptized the said William in the church of Yoxhale.

John le Fauconer, knight, agrees, adding that at Christmas before the said William’s birth, Anne his mother was pregnant with him at Groby, with whom Sir William Mautravers was at dinner (in prandio) there, and she retired to Yoxhale where she bore the said William.

Robert de Belegrave agrees, adding that he had reports of the said birth within eight days following, and thanked God, but gave nothing to the messenger.
William Bate agrees, for on the eve of St. Bridget before the said William’s birth, a son William was born to him, who was 22 at the feast of St. Bridget last past.
Richard Nowel agrees, adding that from the time the said William was 3 years old he has been with him until now, instructing him, which is 18 years and more.
Robert son of John de Groby, agrees and recollects it because on Monday before Christmas next after the death of King Henry a son John was born to him, and then the said William was 1 year 7 weeks and 3 days old.
Alan le Parker agrees, for on Friday after the Purification last 18 years ago, he married Alice his wife, and then the said William was 3 years of age.
Richard Fraunceys agrees, for at the time of the said William’s birth he was chamberlain of Anne his mother, and when she was in labour Sir William de Ferariis her husband came to the door of the said lady’s chamber, and the said Richard opened it that his lord might come in to speak with her.
Master Adam de Leyc[estre] agrees, and recollects because at the time of the birth he impleaded one Walter de Snyrston concerning the church of Walton before the justices of the Bench of King Henry, which king died at the feast of St. Edmund following.

Richard Foliot, prior of Bissemede, says that the said John was 22 on the fourth day before the feast of St. John the Baptist last, and this he knows because many years ago he heard it by the relation of Sir Robert de Hecham, rector of the church of Kestam, who at the time of the said birth was in the service of (stetit cum) the said countess, and sat at her table (fuit commensal’ ejusdem).
Robert de Hecham, rector of Kestan, says that the same John was born at Kaerdif on Saturday before the said feast 55 Hen. III, and this he knows because he was then of the household of the said countess, who died 12 years ago, and then the said John was 10 years of age.
Andrew, rector of the church of Kinebauton, agrees, and says that Eleanor, mother of the said John, was married to Robert his father about the said feast 24 years ago, and two years after she bore the said John, at which time he was constable of Sir Humphrey (Wunfredi) de Booun, grandfather of the said Eleanor de Kinebalton, and had news at once of the said birth.
Richard de Beyvile, knight, agrees, and knows it because he has often heard many who knew the truth wondering that the said John had not his lands &c., being of age.
Alan de Chartris agrees, and recollects it because three years before the said John’s birth he had seisin of the lands of Joan his wife, which was 25 years ago and more at the feast of St. Nicholas last.
James de Sibford, knight, agrees, and knows it by the relation of the said Andrew and other trustworthy men, who used to wonder that the said John had not seisin of his lands being of full age.
Richard le Mariscal of Stonlee agrees, and knows it because at that time he was of the household of Humphrey (Unfredi) de Boun, great grandfather of the said John, and a month after the said birth Beatrice his own mother bore a daughter Agnes, who if she had lived would be 22 about the feast of St. James next.
Robert le Freman of Weston agrees, and knows it because on Wednesday after Palm Sunday, 9 Edw. I, after the death of the said countess an inquisition was made as to her lands &c. and the jurors said that the said John was her heir and would be 10 years of age at the feast of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist next following.
Richard le Haueker of Kestan agrees, and says that within four days after the said birth he had news of it, and at the feast of the Purification following, Isabel his wife bore a son John, who was 21 at the said feast last past.
Roger le Lord of Lethton and Nicholas Hildegar agree, and know it by the common report of the country, and relation of many trustworthy men.
Alexander Walkelyn agrees, and recollects it because at the feast of St. Peter ad Vincula, 1 Edw. I, he took one Basilia to wife, and at the feast of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist previous, the said John was 2 years of age.
