Old Lemyntone. 10 marks of land and rent, viz.—a house with a croft of 3a., 15 cottars rendering for their tenements and salterns (salinis) 45s. yearly and 72 … of salt worth 4l. 12d., a plot of meadow, and a bedelry of the hundred of Christchurch Twynham with the keepership of the warren there, held, of his own inheritance and of that of Joan his wife, of the king in chief by homage only.
John his son, aged 14, is next heir of all the above, after the death of the said Joan who is jointly enfeoffed of the same.
WILTS. Inq. made at Bereford by Dontone on Thursday before St. Gregory the Pope, 28 Edw. I.
Bereford. A court with garden, 78a. arable, 4a. meadow, pasture in common, and 4 tenants each holding a messuage and 6a. land in villenage and rendering 16s. yearly with their works, held, of his own inheritance and that of Joan his wife, of the bishop of Winchester in chief by service of homage.

Stanyngton. A capital messuage with garden, 16 bovates of arable land, 2 1/2a. meadow, and a wood containing 24a.
Hepiscot. A water-mill.
All held of John de Craystock, of his gift to the said William and the heirs of his body, by service of a clove gillyflower yearly.
He died without lawful heir of his body, and all the above tenements ought to revert to John de Craystock and his heirs by the form of the gift aforesaid.

Asswell manor. A capital messuage &c., a fulling mill, 120a. arable, 6 1/2a. meadow, 13a. alderwood and pasture, 50a. young wood, rents &c. (extent given with names of tenants), held of the king in chief by serjeanty, by service of rendering 6s. 8d. yearly at the king’s exchequer; and a piece of garden, 30a. arable, and 7a. alderwood and pasture, held of John de Nortoft, by knight’s service, doing to the same John 10s. yearly. By which extent (viz.—4l. 11s. 10 1/2d.) the manor was delivered to the earl of Cornwall by the king’s commission. He held no other lands this side Trent.
Roger his son, aged 37 and more, is his next heir.
Endorsed: It is agreed by the council that the said land be taken again into the king’s hand, and the wife (mulier) dowered.
Writ of scire facias to the escheator to warn Roger, son and heir of the said Henry, to be in the chancery on the morrow of St. John the Baptist next, which day the king has appointed to Agnes late the wife of the said Henry to receive her dower, 29 May, 28 Edw. I.

583. SARRA, LATE THE WIFE OF RICHARD DE LEVYNGTON.
Writ of certiorari super causa captionis concerning the lands which the said Sarra held in dower in Cumberland, 30 Dec. 28 Edw. I.
Similar writ concerning the lands which the said Sarra held in dower of the inheritance of the said Richard, in the escheator’s bailliwick, 2 Jan. 28 Edw. I.
Return from the escheator that he took the lands aforesaid into the king’s hand for a double reason, viz.—because Christopher son and heir of John de Seton, one of the participants in the said inheritance, was in the king’s wardship, and because Patrick Trompe and Maud de Carrygge, co-heirs and participants of the same inheritance, are in Scotland against the king’s fealty. There are other heirs, viz.—Richard de Kirkebride, Adam de Twynam, Gilbert de Sutheyk, and Walter de Corry, who are in the fourth degree from the said Richard, as is said.

Stapelton. The advowson of the church.
All held in dower of the inheritance of Richard de Levington sometime her husband, who held the town of Levington of the king in chief by 40s. cornage yearly, the town of Skelton of the king in chief by 26s. cornage yearly, and the hamlet of Kirkandr(es) of the king in chief by 6s. 8d. cornage yearly. He died without heir of his body and the inheritance aforesaid descended to his six sisters, viz.—
Euphemia, the eldest, from whom issued Richard de Kirkebride that now is; Isabel from whom issued Adam de Twinam that now is; Eva from whom issued Gilbert de Sotheyk that now is; Agnes from whom issued Walter de Corry that now is; Margery from whom issued William Lukard, who sold his pourparty to John de Seton from whom issued Christopher de Seton that now is; Juliana de Carrig from whom issued Maud and Emma, who are dwelling with the king’s enemies in Scotland, whereby the king is seised of their pourparties in Levington. The sub-escheator seised the said lands &c. because Christopher de Seton aforesaid was under age and in the king’s wardship, and because the said Maud and Emma are with the king’s enemies. Richard de Kirkebride, Walter de Corry, Maud and Emma have their pourparties in Levington; Gilbert de Sothayk, Adam de Twynam, and Christopher de Seton have their pourparties in Skelton; and the said Richard, Walter, Gilbert and Adam have the hamlet of Kirkandr(es); Maud de Carrig and Emma her sister have nothing there, for they took to the value in the vale of Bothecastre, which they sold before the war to Sir John de Swyneburn; and William Lockard had (in the hamlet) of Kirkandr(es) a carucate of land in Staffole, which he gave to Nicholas de Staff(ole) before he enfeoffed John de Seton of the other land.

NORTHUMBERLAND. Inq. made at Chyvington on Thursday after St. James, 28 Edw. I.
Chyvington West. A third part of the town (extent given with names of tenants), including 14a. pasture called ‘le Northmore’ between Bristelden and ‘le Northburn’, a wood called Stobbiswode between Colierburn and Stobbiswodeleye, containing 100a. wood and waste, a moor called ‘le Brounside’ between Stobbiswodeley and ‘le Allirhope’ containing 10a., and another wood called Chiveleye between Bristildene and Kaldewelmore, containing 106 1/2a. wood and waste, held of the king in chief as of the crown, of the inheritance of Theophania his wife, who survives, one of the heirs of Hugh de Morwik, by service of 1/3 knight’s fee, doing a third part of one suit at the county (court), and rendering 3s. 4d. yearly for the guard of the castle of Bamburgh, 5s. yearly rent at the exchequer of Newcastle for deafforesting the forest, and 3 3/4d. for cornage.
Morwik. The manor (extent given) held, of the said inheritance, of the fee of Alnewik by service of 1/3 knight’s fee, and a third part of one suit at the court of Alnewik every three weeks.
The aforesaid Theophania, aged 36 at the feast of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist last, is next heir of the lands &c. aforesaid.

KENT. Inq. made at Canterbury, 18 April, 28 Edw. I (defective).
Netherehardres. The manor (extent given with names of tenants), including lands held in gavelkind, held of the king in chief of the barony of Crevequer by service of a knight’s fee, doing suit at the king’s court of Lhedes every three weeks. He held no other lands &c. this side Trent.
William his son (aged) …., is his next heir of the lands at free fee; (and of the gavelkind lands the said William?) is one heir, Roger son of the said John another heir (aged) …,……. (aged) …, and Robert his son, aged 22, is a fourth heir.

Horewode. The manor held of John son of Philip by socage, service unspecified; and Walter de Bello Campo now holds it of the king’s gift until the lawful age of the heir.
SALOP. Inq. made at Conede on Friday before St. Valentine, 29 Edw. I.
Crynton. The town held of the king in chief in socage.
Conedovere. The manor similarly held.
Bridgnorth (Brug’). A burgage held of the king.
Myllynchehope the Less (minor), held of the prior of Welloke in chief in socage.
Wolstaneston, held of the lords of Longedon in chief in socage.
Norton, held of Thomas Tochet in chief in socage.

LONDON. Inq. Friday before Christmasday, 29 Edw. I.
He had no lands in the city, but he had there 60s. quit rent. viz.—30s. from the tenement of Hugh de Castello in Fletestrete, 20s. from that of Master Edmund de London, clerk, and 10s. from that of Michael le Poter at Fencherche. The king’s escheator has received the said rent ever since the said Philip’s death.
Writ of plenius certiorari to the said mayor and sheriffs because no mention is made in the above inquisition, of whom the said rent is held, by what service, and who is the heir &c., 18 April, 29 Edw. I.

The rent abovesaid is held of the heirs of John de Enefeud, goldsmith (aur’), and he ought to do no service for it.

And there ought to be paid 30s. yearly out of the manor to Petronilla, mother of the same Edmund, for part of her dower, and 9d. to Peter de Thaleworth. He held no other lands in fee on this side Trent.
His daughters, Petronilla aged 8, and Isabel aged 7, are his next heirs.

Sowe. The manor (extent given with names of tenants), including 2 hides of land in Grenberge and Caldecote, and a messuage and 1/2 virgate of land in Sowe held by Emma de Bray, held of the king in chief by grand serjeanty, and by service of keeping the forest of Cank. One Hugh de Loges, grandfather of the said Richard, held the said manor with the bailliwick of the forest of Cank of the king in chief rendering 10 marksyearly at the king’s exchequer for the said bailliwick, and doing homage; but king Henry the king’s father, took the said bailliwick into his hand on account of a transgression of the said Hugh, and the king has committed the same to whom he would with the charge of the said 10 marks.
(Unspecified.) A messuage and a virgate of land held of Robert de Monte Alto by homage.

Wyrley. 30s. 1 1/2d. yearly rent from free tenants, 37s. 11 3/4d. rent of customers, and 4a. meadow (extent given with names of tenants), held of the king in chief by grand serjeanty; for one Hugh de Loges his grandfather held the same by the grand serjeanty of keeping the king’s forest of Canok and rendering for the same 10 marks at the king’s exchequer, who was convicted of the taking of a stag before the justices and imprisoned, and afterwards ransomed for 200 marks, for which king Henry the king’s father restored to him his lands &c. but retained the keepership of the said bailliwick; and no other service was afterwards done to the king but homage, wardship and relief.
Heir as above, aged 4 at Whitsunday last.
Rodbaston. The manor (extent given with names of tenants) held of the king in chief by the serjeanty aforesaid, whereof the said Richard and Elizabeth his wife were enfeoffed jointly a year before he married her, by Richard de Loges his father, to hold to them and the heirs of their bodies, and they continued their seisin jointly until the said Richard’s death.

Writ, Karlaverok, 10 July, 28 Edw. I.
CUMBERLAND. Inq. made at Carlisle on Saturday after the Nativity of the Blessed Mary, 28 Edw. I.
Isehale. The manor (extent given), including a great park containing 400a., 300a. pasture called Blencraykmore, and the following free tenements &c., held of Thomas son and heir of Thomas de Multon of Gilleslaund, now in the king’s wardship, by service of a mark for cornage yearly:—
Free tenants:—
Redman. The hamlet held of the said manor by Matthew de Redman by homage, rendering a pair of gilt spurs or 6d. yearly.
Plumland. A moiety similarly held by* Walter de Plumland by homage, rendering 20d. yearly.
Blencrayk. Four bovates of land similarly held by the same Walter, rendering a third part of a pair of gilt spurs or 2d. yearly; 4a. land held by John de Brinthwait by the like service; 100a. land held by William de Blencrayk, rendering 2s. yearly; 9a. held by John de Oxholm, rendering 1d. yearly; and a cottage with curtilage, held by Walter, rector of Plumlond, rendering 6d. yearly; and there are 60 bovates of land &c. in Blencrayk (extent given).
Warthole. Five bovates of land held by William de Warthole by homage, rendering 2 1/2d. yearly; 1 bovate held by Alexander Warde, rendering 1/2d.; and 2 bovates held by Robert de Ireby, rendering 2d. yearly.
Sunderlande. Four bovates held by Alan le Usser, rendering 1d. and an arrow at Christmas yearly; and 12a. held by Adam le Inglis by the like service; and there are 14 bovates of land, cottars and customers &c. in Sunderland.
Linescales. Five tenants holding 49 1/2a. of demesne land and 2a. meadow.
The said Hubert espoused one Ada Brune and begat of her a son William, and they lived together for four years, after which a divorce was made between them by Ralph, sometime bishop of Carlisle, by reason of consanguinity, which was proved before the espousals. The said William is now aged 14. Afterwards the said Hubert married one Margaret du Boys and begat of her a son John, who is 7 years of age.

NORFOLK. Inq. 16 Aug. 28 Edw. I (defective).
Surlyngham. The manor (extent given) held of Roger Bygot, earl of Norfolk and marshal of England, by service of 4 knights’ fees, in whose homage the said Hubert died. And there are of rent resolute at Forneset for ‘waytefee’ 10d. yearly; to Thomas Echelyng for a tenement 1d. yearly; and to Nicholas Brian for a tenement 1d.
The said Hubert married his kinswoman, Ada la Brune, of whom he begat one only son named William, and afterwards by the court Christian a divorce was celebrated between them by reason of consanguinity, and he married one Margaret, of whom he begat sons and daughters, of whom John is the eldest, aged … years, and is his next heir.
