Writ of plenius certiorari on the complaint of Margery late the wife of the said Nicholas, that on the death of the said Nicholas the sheriff of Essex and Hertford had taken into the king's hand certain lands which the said Nicholas held of her inheritance, together with other lands which were his own, 24 Feb. 9 Edw. I.
Essex. Extent (undated).
Esthamme and Westhamme. 100a. marsh, 28a. worn out land, 1a. meadow, 4l. rent of free tenants, 12l. 15s. 10d. rent of customers, 32s. 4d. works of customers, pannage, pasture, &c. held by the said Nicholas and Margery, of the inheritance of the said Margery, of the king in chief by knight's service.
Philippa the wife of Roger de Lancastre, her sister, is next heir of the said Margery, and of full age.
[Essex.] Extent (undated).
Aete Monfichet manor. A messuage, gardens, &c., 300a. arable, 2a. meadow, 2s. rent of free tenants, 8s. 8d. rent of customers, 100s. works of customers, pannage, perquisites of court, &c. held by the said Margery on the day the said Nicholas died, of the king in chief.
Heir as above, and be it remembered that he died before Christmas, 9 Edw. I.

Writ to the king's steward to deliver to Agnes, late the wife of the said Robert, the manor of Hamstede with its members of Aldesworthe and Cumpton, co. Berks, except the service of 13s. 4d. due from the same, and 8⅓ virgates land in Cotesmor, co. Rutland, which the king has assigned to her in dower, saving to the king in Cotesmor 50s. 4d. which she shall pay yearly until the lawful age of the heir, 9 May, 9 Edw. I.

Essex. Inq. (undated.)
Hatfeld. A messuage, 120a. land and 15a. pasture which he delivered to John le Ferrur, citizen of London, and Margery his wife for a term of 24 years, 6 years before his death, within which term the said John le Ferun died and the said Margery took to husband one Richard de Quercu, who came with the said Margery to the house of John Filiol in Borham, where the said Baldwin was on his deathbed on Monday in the first week of Lent 7 Edw. I, and there rendered the residue of the said term to the said Baldwin, so that he should enfeoff them jointly for their lives, which he did the same day by his charter. The said messuage &c. are held of the manor of Blunteshale, which was sometime of Nicholas Tregoz, by ¼ knight's fee, and they were in seisin from the said Monday until the Saturday following, when he (the said Baldwin) died, and so have remained peacefully until now. He held no land of the king nor of another on the day he died.
Thomas his son, aged 12 and more, is his next heir.

(Unspecified.) 160a. arable, 30a. wood, 10a. pasture, 3a. meadow, 46s. 4d. rent of assize, works &c., a garden and curtilages, and a windmill, held on the day he died of the king in chief by service of keeping a goshawk of the king's, taking yearly from the king the fee of a goshawk keeper; of all which Joan late his wife has a third part in dower, and has made oath not to marry without the king's licence.
Peter his son, is his next heir, and of full age.

Wardon. A messuage, 54½a. in demesne, 16a. wood, 4½a. meadow, a little piece of pasture, 5 virgates land in villenage, 2½ cottars, and free tenancies worth 17s. 11d. yearly, held of the king in chief, doing scutage and rendering a third part of 9s. 4d. yearly to the king.
She died on Friday before the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, 9 Edw. I. Her heirs are from her two sisters, viz.—William le Coynter, son and heir of Alice de Stiuecle and of full age, and John de Boueles, son and heir of Mary de Boueles, aged 19 on the day of St. Edward in the above year.

847. Thomas Cordeboef.
[Suffolk And] Norfolk. Inq. Saturday after St. Matthias, 10 Edw. I.
[Suffolk.] Mendlesham, Brocford, Wycham. (and) Theuyt in the hundred of Hertesmere. A messuage, 60a. land, 8a. wood, 1a. meadow, 7a. pasture, and 33s. rent.
Norfolk. Haneworthe. 26s. rent for a tenement which the earl of Norfolk held of him of the same fee of Mendlesham.
All held of the king in chief by serjeanty of maintaining a serjeant with a crossbow in the king's army for forty days at his own cost, and rendering to the king 30s. yearly rent.
[Suffolk.] Buckeslawe in the hundred of Blithingg. A messuage, 60a. land, 7a. pasture, and 60s. (rent), with the advowson of the church, held of the earl of Cornwall by knight's service, rendering 5s. every two years for the guard of the castle of Eye, and suit at the said earl's court of Eye.
His heirs are Joan his daughter, and Basilia, Galiena, Maud and Alice, (her) sisters, all of full age.
All these (lands &c.) have been taken into the king's hand, and are in wardship (custodita).
