[Bamburg.] 37a. arable, and 3a. meadow, held of the king in chief, rendering 6s. 8d. yearly at the exchequer of Newcastle, and to the bailiffs of the town of Bamburg 4s. 5d., and he found a porter and a watchman (wayt) at the castle of Bamburg, and took of the king 2d. daily.

Essex. Inq. Sunday before St. John the Baptist, 16 Edw. I.
Dedham. A messuage called le Esthus (?), 40a. arable, 5a. meadow, 3a. pasture, 2s. rent, &c., held of Sir William de Montecaniso of Edwardeston by socage, rendering 10s. yearly; but he gave all the above to Maud daughter of Henry Pecche, whereof she was in peaceful seisin for seven weeks, and afterwards he married her, so that he did not die seised thereof in demesne as of fee; also a messuage called Overhouse, 60a. arable, 8a. meadow, 3a. wood, and 13s. 10d. and 1lb. pepper rent of assize, held of the prioress of Canpeseth by socage rendering 24s. 4d. yearly; of these he died seised in his demesne as of fee.
La Mile ende. A messuage and 10a. land, and 6a. pasture in the said town of Dyham, 3s. rent from John Randolf and 6d. from Walter de Badele, purchased by the said Robert and Maud.
He died on Sunday after St. Augustine, 16 Edw. I. Gilbert his son, aged 7½, is his next heir.

Sutton in Assefeld. A messuage and 12 bovates land, and 2 bovates in Hothweyt, held of the king rendering 14s. yearly, and doing homage and service, viz.—doing suit at the king's court of Mamesfeld, and in the king's army in Wales for forty days with a man, horse, hauberk, iron cap, lance, and sword.
Sutton Schawe. 10a. land where his mill used to be, held of the king by service of 5s. 3d. yearly.
Sutton. ½ bovate held of the king rendering 16d. yearly as other tenants do.
Kirketon and Screveton. 59s. 6d. yearly rent held of the heirs of Hugh de Capella for scutage when it shall happen.
Sutton upon Sore and Bonyngton. 34s. yearly rent held of Richard de Morley for scutage when it happens.

Sneterton. 2½ bovates and ⅓ bovate land with a messuage, jointly held by the said Jordan and Avice, rendering to Sir Edmund 8s. 2½d. by weight, and to Robert de Dedok 15 quarters wheat.

663. Emery (Almaricus) Pecche.
Writ of plenius certiorari, on the complaint of Margaret late the wife of Edmund Pecche, that the escheator, asserting that the said Emery held the manor of Breset of the king in chief, which not he but Roger Luveday held, by surrender made by the said Emery in the king's court, had taken into the king's hand lands in Lose by Hetham held by Emery Pecche father of the said Edmund of the abbot of St. Edmund's in socage, the wardship whereof ought to pertain to her until the lawful age of Thomas, son and heir of the said Edmund, 30 Jan. 16 Edw. I.
[Suffolk.] Inq. Thursday after St. Matthias the Apostle, 16 Edw. I.
Lose. 1 carucate land was held by the said Emery of the abbot of St. Edmund's in socage, by service of 1d. yearly, of which he dowered Margaret late the wife of Edmund his son, so that he did not die seised except of a moiety thereof; neither the said Emery nor Edmund held anything of the king in chief on the day he died.
Thomas, son of the said Edmund, aged 9½, is next heir of the said Emery.
Writ of certiorari, on the complaint of the abbot of St. Benet's Hulme, that the escheator had taken into the king's hand certain land in Hannyng held of him by the said Emery by knight's service, 4 March, 16 Edw. I.
Norfolk. Inq. Friday after Easter, 16 Edw. I.
Honyng. The manor was sometime held by Geoffrey de Glaunvile, of the abbot of St. Benet's, Hulme, by service of 1 knight's fee; and after his death his inheritance descended to his five sisters, the eldest of whom Eleanor was married in Normandy, and for that reason all the land due to her was taken into the king's hand, and King Henry the king's father held it until he gave it to Sir Emery Peche, but by what service he held the same the jury are ignorant.
The said Emery died on Thursday after Christmas, 16 Edw. I. Thomas son of Edmund Peche, aged 13, as the jury understand, is his next heir.

Ormesby. 7 bovates land and 2 tofts, held of Arnold de Percy by service of 1d. rent; and 4 bovates and 2 tofts held of William son of William de Percy of Kyldale the elder by service of 1 mark, to be paid yearly to William the elder.
Ormesby and Caldcottes. 20l. land held of the said William the younger, for 200 marks which the said Gilbert lent him upon 20l. land until the feast of St. John the Baptist 1289, and in default of payment the land should remain to the said Gilbert and his heirs for ever, rendering 1d. yearly for all services.
Neuton under Hoyphensberg. A messuage, 10 tofts and 22½ bovates land, held of Sir William de Rosels by foreign service.

[Norfolk;] hundred of North Erpingham. Inq. Wednesday in Whitsun week, 16 Edw. I.
Ruweton. The manor (extent given) held of Sir Robert de Waleyns in free marriage by service of 1/8 knight's fee. She held nothing of the king in the hundred.
She died on Monday before Mid Lent in the said year. Robert de Valeyns, her brother, aged 60, is her next heir.
Norfolk; Hundred of Shropham. Inq. Friday in Whitsun week, 16 Edw. I.
Little Breckles. A messuage, 80a. arable, 10a. meadow, pasture, 20s. rent of assize from customers, rents of fowls and geese, 60 works, a watermill &c. held in dower through the death of Thomas de Grymiston her husband, who held the same of the countess of Arundell by service ½ knight's fee. She held nothing in the hundred of the king in her demesne as of fee.
Date of death, as above. Alice the wife of John de Breckles, daughter of Geoffrey brother of the said Thomas, to whom the said tenements ought to descend, is next heir of the said Thomas and aged 26.

A capital messuage 'cum quodam avenam,' 9 bovates land in demense without tofts, and 7 bovates land, whereof John de Fitteling holds 2 by homage and foreign service, and the abbot of Thorenton 2 in frank almoin, held of the king in chief by knight's service; and 9 bovates land with 9 tofts, held in bondage of John de Aseby by free service of 1 mark yearly, together with a wind-mill.
Stephen his son, aged 40 and more, is his next heir.
Endorsed:—Inquisition of lands and tenements which were of Stephen de Oustewyk in Holdernesse, who held of the king by reason of the lands which were of the earl of Albemarle.

675. Emma alias Emma la Base, Daughter of Salomon son of Ralph de Berkynge.

Essex. Inq. Wednesday after the Purification, 16 Edw. I.
Berkyng. A messuage and ½ carucate land, sometime held, as her pourparty of the inheritance of the said Solomon, of John son and heir of Sir William Comyn of Kylbride, who is in the king's wardship, one of the heirs of the barony of Valoynes, by service of 5d., her pourparty of the service. The said Solomon for the whole tenement which he held in Berkyng of the said barony, did suit at the court of Heycham which is a member of the said barony, until by a composition made in the king's court between Sir Robert son of Walter, who married Gunnora,
ancestress of the said John Comyn and heiress of the whole barony, and the said Solomon, the said Robert released to the said Solomon the said suit. In the time of King Henry the king's father, Sir William Comyn father of the said John, on the day that Isabel, mother of the said William and one of the heirs of the said barony, died, was under age, and King Henry had the wardship of his lands, &c. in England by reason of the said barony, and conferred the same upon Sir William de Valensia until the lawful age of the said William, and the same Emma la Base then did service to Sir William de Valensia. The said Emma being unable to move from her bed from infirmity and age, during the lifetime of Roger de la Rokele her husband, a charter of feoffment was made under the names of the said Roger and Emma or one of them, of the truth of which the jury are ignorant, granting the said messuage and ½ carucate to Roisa, daughter of John Den son of the said Emma, and to John son of Henry Malemayns, by virtue of which the said Henry caused the said Emma to be carried from the said house to his own house, where he kept her, and there within a week after the making of the said charter she died. The said Roger her husband until the day she died freely disposed of the goods and chattels within the said house and land.

[Suffolk.] Inq. Wednesday before SS. Simon and Jude, 16 Edw. I.
Brom. A capital messuage, 50a. arable, 16a. meadow, and 6a. pasture, held of the king by this service, that if the king should wish to have foot-soldiers (petalliam) from the towns of Norfolk and Suffolk in his army in Wales, he should conduct it from the ditch (fossat') of St. Edmunds to Wales, and receive at the said ditch 4d. per head for his sustenance for forty days, and for suit of the hundred of Hertesmere 2¼d. yearly; 96a. arable, and 8a. pasture, of the fee of le Botyler, held of Sir Robert de Sehlton (?) by service of ½ knight's fee; 8a. land held of the prior of Thefford Monachorum, rendering 4s. 4d.; 5a. held of John de Hoo rendering 12d.; a water-mill held of Robert de Pirar(iis) rendering 1d. yearly; and there are 34s. 8d. rent of assize of free tenants, 11s. 7d. rent of customers and bondmen, 140 works, 4 hens at Christmas, 60 eggs at Easter, and 500 red herrings at Lent; and he had the advowson of a moiety of the church by reason of the tenement held of the king, and there is a rector of that moiety by itself. John Davelers with the consent of Bartholomew his father dowered Isabel his wife of the manor of Everwarton with the advowson of the church, and the said Bartholomew made a charter thereof to the said Isabel, who now survives, during her virginity.
Bartholomew his son, aged 1 year and 3 weeks, is his next heir.

Everwarton. A messuage with garden, 80a. arable, 3a. alderwood, 2a. marsh, a water-mill, a wind-mill, 48s. 4d. rent of assize of free tenants, 24s. 5½d. rent of bondmen and customers, and 32 carriage services (averagia) from the said manor to Yakesnol towards Brom, held of the king in chief by the same service as above; 10a. arable held of John de Aldwartun;
5a. land of the fee of William de Brumpton; and 3a. land of the fee of William de Thorp; and he had the advowson of the church by reason of the tenements held of the king. The said John dowered Isabel his wife of this manor and advowson with his father's consent, as abovesaid.
