The manor, two parts whereof the said William sometime held as of his own inheritance, and his mother held a third part in dower; but long ago the said William had demised the said two parts to one Roger Appelgar for a term of years, within which he sold to the said Roger and his heirs the said tenements in fee; but in the time of the war in England he ejected him, and retained the said two parts until the last eyre of the justices in Essex, when certain daughters and heirs of William Appelgar, son and heir of the said Roger brought a writ against the said William, and recovered seisin of the said two parts; those tenements were then in the king's hand through the withdrawal of the said William, but he held a third part of the manor (extent given). N.B.—This extent has been ruled across.

Return (undated) reciting writ of 18 May, 14 Edw. I., requiring the escheator to execute a former writ of plenius certiorari to enquire concerning the condition of the said Peter, and the alienations of lands, &c. made by him, and to commit the custody of the said Peter, with his lands, goods and chattels, &c. to John de Dychton who has to wife Placencia sister of the said Peter, during the king's pleasure, provided that the said Peter his wife and children should be well and honourably maintained out of the issues therof. |

The said Peter is manifestly frantic (freneticus) and an idiot, and altogether incapable' of managing his lands or affairs.
Goutlackarres. The manor held by the said Peter, viz.—three parts of the heir of Richard le Botiler of Sandele, and the fourth part of Sir John de Heton, by service of 3d. yearly; of which manor he gave a mill to Agnes de Seyvill his sister four years ago and then he was incapable.
Skelebrok. 3½ bovates land held of Sir Ran[ulph] de Blamustre by service of 10s. yearly; which he demised whilst of sound mind to Robert son of Stephen de Kirkeby for twenty years, rendering 26s. 8d. yearly to the said Peter, whereof eight years have elapsed.
Smetheton. A messuage and 4 bovates land held of the earl of Lincoln by service of doing suit at the earl's court of Pontefract; which he demised whilst of sound mind to William de Seyvill his uncle for fourteen years, whereof seven have elapsed.
Thurleston. 42s. rent of assize held of the heir of John de Hoderode, whereof nothing is alienated.
Aldeham. 60s. land held of the heir of Roger de Wamwell, which he demised whilst of sound mind to John de Wamwell for twenty years, six years ago, for a sum of money in hand and 4 marks yearly.
The said John de Dychton is incapable in tenements and goods, and weak in knowledge and reason, not only by the examination of the escheator himself but by the testimony of trustworthy knights and of the jury, wherefore the escheator dared not commit the custody of the said Peter and of his lands, &c. to him, until he should further certify the king; nevertheless he sent this inquisition with the king's writs by the said John to the court, but afterwards understood that he had not delivered them; he therefore sends this on the last royal mandate. |
