Writ of plenius certiorari to Master Walter Scamel, dean of Salisbury, and Ralph de Sandwyco, the king's steward, on the complaint of Adam de la Cnolle and Emma his wife that the sheriff had distrained for a rent, due from them to the said Robert for life only, 8 Nov. 6 Edw. I.
Wilts. Inq. Monday after St. Scholastica, 8 Edw. I.
Fisshelton. A messuage and certain parcels of land and meadow were granted by the said Robert to Master Adam de Tyleneye and his heirs, whose sister and heir the said Emma is, rendering to him 40s. yearly for his life only, and that after his death they should be quit for ever.

292. William de Olton.
Writ to Robert de Ufford, justiciary of Ireland, on the complaint of Hugh, son of the said William, showing that a jury of 24 knights which he had arraigned to convict the jurors of an assize of mort d' ancestor at Warwick of having falsely made oath that the said William, who died at Dungaluy in Ireland, did not die seised of a certain messuage, lands &c. in Olton, but gave them while he was in Ireland to John de Blosmevill by deed of feoffment, desired to be more fully certified, and commanding him to make inquisition, 29 July, 6 Edw. I.

Connaught (Connattia). The said William died at Dungalui seised of two parts of a messuage, 50a. land, 2a. meadow, and 10s. rent in Olton, and he did not give the same whilst he was in Ireland to John de Blosmevill nor make any charter of feoffment to him, nor did he transmit any writing to William de Oddinggesheles, the chief lord of that fee, to put the said John in seisin, and the said John was not put in seisin during the life of the said William de Olton.

Salop. Inq. Thursday after St. James the Apostle, 6 Edw. I.
La Wrekene forest. A messuage, one nook of land containing 12a., and an assart containing 2a. land and ½a. meadow, held of the king in chief by service of keeping the Hay of Welynton in the said forest.
Roger his son, aged 25 and more on the day of St. James the Apostle (last), is his next heir.

294. Richard son of William de Harecurt.
Letters patent to Henry de Sodebrok and Robert le Eyr, with the assent of Adam de Monte Alto who has the wardship, to make proof of the age of the said Richard at Wodestok on Friday the morrow of the Epiphany, 28 Dec. 6 Edw. I.
[Oxford.] Proof of age, Friday the morrow of the Epiphany (defective).
Robert de Eton says the said Richard was 21 on the 3rd day after St. Nicholas, 6 Edw. 1. and recollects it well because he was steward to the said William, and has a son of the same age.
William de Sancto Audoeno agrees and recollects it because he was with Ela, countess of Warwick, before she was married to Sir Philip Basset, and the said William came to her and made known that he had a son named Richard, and he had no other than this.
William le Megre agrees, for he had a brother named John le Povre who died in the same year the said Richard was born, and his heir was in wardship for fourteen years and has held his lands for seven years and a half.
Adam de la Dounhall agrees, for his father who died sixteen years ago, told him five years and more before his death that the said William had a son Richard.
Richard Talevan alias Talevand agrees, for he was hundredor of the hundred of Wotton, where the said William had his manor of Staunton, two years before he had his land, in which time the said Richard was born, and he has held his land for nineteen years.
John Cocus of Babbelack agrees, for he was in the service of Ralph son of Nicholas, when the said Richard was born, and remained with him and Richard his son for four years, and was afterwards in the service of Sir Osbert Giffard for seventeen years and more.
Roger do (sic) Osen[eye] agrees, for in the same year that the said Richard was born he demised the hundred of Wotton, and was afterwards in the service of the abbot of Osen[eye] for twenty-one years and more.
Thomas le Botiller agrees, for on the same day the said Richard was born Joan le Botiller his grandmother gave to his father 2 carucates land in Wovelicote which he held for six years, and himself held them for fifteen years and more after his father's death.
John de Luford (?) agrees, for he had a most especial ... named Robert le Rower, who died eighteen years ago, and the said Richard (was born ?) three years and more before.
William Rauf agrees, for he has a son Robert who was born in the same year as the said Richard.
William son of Ralph le Jevene agrees, for when the said Richard was born he was in the service of Osbert de ... clerk of Sir Edmund the king's brother, and was with him for three years, and afterwards married a wife ...
Augustine de Eynesham agrees, for he was born in the same year as the said Richard, as his parents particularly ...
All the jurors agree ... and say that he is 21 and more.

295. William son of Robert de Aylesbyri alias de Eylesbyri.
Writ to Richard de Holebrok, the king's steward, 1 Nov. 6 Edw. I.
Buckingham. Inq. Friday after St. Clement, 7 Edw. I.
Eylesbyri. A messuage and 3 virgates land held of the king in chief of the fee of the otter hunter by providing straw (litteram) for the king's bed, and finding straw and rushes for strewing the king's bedchamber thrice yearly if he shall come so often, if in winter straw, and in summer rushes, and if the king shall come so often he shall receive two grey geese (gantas) at each visit in summer, and three eels in winter, so that six grey geese or nine eels are due yearly; and a messuage and 4 virgates land held of the lord of Eylesbyri, rendering 63s. 1d. yearly.
Mentlesham of the parish of Wendovere. 2 little crofts enclosed with hedges and 7a. brushwood (bruz), held of the lord of Wendovere in chief, doing 26s. yearly.

296. Robert Pipard.
Writ to Ralph de Sandwyco, the king's steward, 28 Oct. 7 Edw. I.
Wilts. Inq. Monday after St. Scholastica, 8 Edw. I.
Fhytelton. 10l. land were given by King H[enry] to Adam Cok and his heirs, to be held by paying 6d. rent to the king at Claryndone; and the said Adam had an heir named Agnes whom Robert Pypard married, and died without heir of his body; afterwards King H[enry] granted the marriage of the said Agnes to Henry de Candevre, who married her, and she died without heir of her body; then King E[dward] granted the land to the said Henry for life, and it is now in the king's hand as escheat and in the custody of the sheriff.

Writ of certiorari to the sheriff of Dorset, on the complaint of Hugh de Roches that the wardship of the manor of Lulleworth which pertained to him had been committed to Eustace de Hacche, 24 Jan. 7 Edw. I.
Dorset. Inq. made in full county (court) (undated).
Lolleworth. The manor was held of Hugh de Roches and his ancestors, and the said Hugh holds Wulfeton and the manor of Lolleworthe of the king in chief by free service of 1 knight.
Reginald de Lulleworth his son, aged 12 at Palm Sunday next, is his next heir.
Writ to the sheriff of Dorset, 25 Jan. 7 Edw. I.
Dorset. Inq. made in full county (court) (undated).
Lulleworth. The manor held of Hugh de Roches, and the said Hugh holds it of the king, service unknown.

Somerset. Inq. Monday before the Annunciation, 7 Edw. I.
Styueleghe. 240a. arable, 30a. meadow, 2 marks rent of assize, 100a. wood in the forest of Rechiche &c., one moiety of the tenement and the whole of the wood being held of John Quatremayns in free socage, rendering 1d. yearly, and the other moiety of Thomas le Moyne in free socage, rendering 4s. yearly.
Edmund his son, aged 27½, is his next heir.
Dorset. Inq. Saturday the feast of St. Edward the King and Martyr, 7 Edw. I.
Frome. The manor (extent given) with the advowson of the church, held of the king in chief for ½ knight's fee, of the purchase of the queen consort from Henry de Novoburgo.

Writ to Thomas de Normanvill, the king's steward, 6 March, 7 Edw. I.
[Nottingham.] Extent, Friday in Easter week, 7 Edw. I.
Brunisley. The manor and 1 carucate land there, and 5 bovates land in Trowelle, held of the serjeanty of the fee of Peverel by service of finding in the army of Wales one horse, price 5s., with a sack and pin (brocha), and a halter (capistro) of ½d., for forty days at his own costs; and 1½ bovate land and an assart held of the same fee of Robert de Brunisley, worth 17s. yearly, whereof he is bound to pay 15s. serjeantry yearly at the king's exchequer, which was rated in the time of the said Robert, because the tenement was out of the hands of the said Gilbert, who was the chief lord.
Trowelle. 2 bovates land worth 17s. 6d. yearly, which were rated at 15s. serjeanty in the time of Robert de Muschamp; and a third part of a water-mill rated at ½ mark in the time of Henry Pascayl of Estweyte; because they were out of the hands of the said Gilbert.
Newthorp. ½ bovate land held of Robert de Newthorp.

Wilts. Inq. Thursday the feast of the Holy Innocents, 8 Edw. I.
Tudeworth. The manor was held by Roger la Suche of John Biset, and he gave it to Gilbert de Stanford with Lora his daughter in free marriage, and the said Gilbert being dead, the said Lora gave the same to Arrabilia late the wife of the said Henry and to Fulk their son, by service of 1d. yearly. The manor is now in the king's hand. The jury know not whether he held the other manors named in the writ (missing), of the king in chief.
Salop. Inq. Thursday the feast of the Conversion of St. Paul, 8 Edw. I.
Tonge. The manor was held by Alan la Souche of the honour of Brecheynoc without service because it was of free marriage, and he gave it to William de Harecourt with Alice his sister in free marriage, who begat a daughter Orrabilis, whom the said Henry de Penebruge married, and from whom he had that manor as the inheritance of his wife.

Weston under Egge. The manor was held by Henry de Penebrug of Walter Giffard, archbishop of York, by 1 knight's fee, and afterwards came Henry his son and heir and quit-claimed for himself and his heirs all his right in the said manor for the manor of Ullingwyke, co. Hereford, and for 1,000 marks sterling to the said archbishop.

Ullingwik. 1 carucate land with messuage and garden, 16s. rent of assize with the aid of two villeins, and a meadow worth 6s. yearly, held of the bishop of Hereford, doing suit at his court at Hereford, and answering for ⅓ knight's fee.

Gilloch. The manor held of the king in chief by service of finding one man for fifteen days at his own cost when the king goes in the army, 'viz.—called Layeferd,' and doing suit every fortnight at the hundred (court) of Wormelowe, and he shall give an ox for heriot when he shall die, or 2s. if he have none, according to the custom of the Welsh in that hundred.
Ullingewyk. A third part held of the bishop of Hereford by service of ⅓ knight's fee.
Catteley. 4l. 17s. (sic) 8d. rent of assize, held of the gift of William Devereys by service of 1d. yearly.

Ayliston and Tonge. The manors were given by William de Harrecurt, lord of Ayliston, to his two daughters Orrabilis and Margery jointly; afterwards came Henry de Penbrugg, and married the said Orrabilis, and John de Canti Lupo the said Margery, and by agreement between them the manor of Tonge remained wholly to the said Henry and Orrabilis, and Ayleston to the said John and Margery, who died seised thereof without heir of their bodies, and so that manor reverted to Fulk son and heir of the said Henry and Orrabilis, then under age, and the said Henry did not die seised thereof. Ayliston manor is held of Richard de Harrecourt by service of 1 knight's fee, and he holds it of the Earl of Winchester, and he of the king, by the said service.
