Proof of age, Friday the morrow of the Epiphany (defective).
Robert de Eton says the said Richard was 21 on the 3rd day after St. Nicholas, 6 Edw. 1. and recollects it well because he was steward to the said William, and has a son of the same age.
William de Sancto Audoeno agrees and recollects it because he was with Ela, countess of Warwick, before she was married to Sir Philip Basset, and the said William came to her and made known that he had a son named Richard, and he had no other than this.
William le Megre agrees, for he had a brother named John le Povre who died in the same year the said Richard was born, and his heir was in wardship for fourteen years and has held his lands for seven years and a half.
Adam de la Dounhall agrees, for his father who died sixteen years ago, told him five years and more before his death that the said William had a son Richard.
Richard Talevan alias Talevand agrees, for he was hundredor of the hundred of Wotton, where the said William had his manor of Staunton, two years before he had his land, in which time the said Richard was born, and he has held his land for nineteen years.
John Cocus of Babbelack agrees, for he was in the service of Ralph son of Nicholas, when the said Richard was born, and remained with him and Richard his son for four years, and was afterwards in the service of Sir Osbert Giffard for seventeen years and more.
Roger do (sic) Osen[eye] agrees, for in the same year that the said Richard was born he demised the hundred of Wotton, and was afterwards in the service of the abbot of Osen[eye] for twenty-one years and more.
Thomas le Botiller agrees, for on the same day the said Richard was born Joan le Botiller his grandmother gave to his father 2 carucates land in Wovelicote which he held for six years, and himself held them for fifteen years and more after his father's death.
John de Luford (?) agrees, for he had a most especial ... named Robert le Rower, who died eighteen years ago, and the said Richard (was born ?) three years and more before.
William Rauf agrees, for he has a son Robert who was born in the same year as the said Richard.

Gilloch. The manor held of the king in chief by service of finding one man for fifteen days at his own cost when the king goes in the army, 'viz.—called Layeferd,' and doing suit every fortnight at the hundred (court) of Wormelowe, and he shall give an ox for heriot when he shall die, or 2s. if he have none, according to the custom of the Welsh in that hundred.

Ayliston and Tonge. The manors were given by William de Harrecurt, lord of Ayliston, to his two daughters Orrabilis and Margery jointly; afterwards came Henry de Penbrugg, and married the said Orrabilis, and John de Canti Lupo the said Margery, and by agreement between them the manor of Tonge remained wholly to the said Henry and Orrabilis, and Ayleston to the said John and Margery, who died seised thereof without heir of their bodies, and so that manor reverted to Fulk son and heir of the said Henry and Orrabilis, then under age, and the said Henry did not die seised thereof. Ayliston manor is held of Richard de Harrecourt by service of 1 knight's fee, and he holds it of the Earl of Winchester, and he of the king, by the said service. |
