BUCKINGHAM. Inq. taken at Aylesbury, 15 May, 4 Richard II.
He held the under-mentioned messuage etc. in his demesne as of fee.
Prince’s Rysburgh. A messuage and a virgate of land, held of the king in chief by knight’s service and service of 7s., 1 lb. pepper and suit to the king’s courts in Prince’s Rysburgh every three weeks.
He died on Thursday before St. Peter’s Chains, 1 Richard II. Henry, his son, aged 14 years and more, is his heir.
Joan, formerly his wife, occupied the premises and received the issues thereof for a whole year after his death. Since then, Lewis Clyfford, knight, has occupied them and received the issues.

Writ of Mandamus, 6 February, 4 Richard II
LINCOLN. Inq. taken at Stamford, Saturday before St. George, 4 Richard II.
He held the under-mentioned manor (estate not given).
Little Paunton. The manor, held of William la Zouche, knight, by service of one knight’s fee. The said William holds it of the heirs of a former earl of Hereford, and they of the king.
He died on Monday before St. Wolfram, 50 Edward III. After his death the manor descended to his three daughters and coheirs, to wit, Avice, aged 27 years and more, married to John Karnell, Isabel, aged 26 years and more, married to Hugh Fayrefax, and Alice, aged 5 years and more.
The said John Karnell and Hugh occupied two-thirds of the manor in right of their wives, and still occupy them; and John Karnell has the said Alice in his wardship, and the third part of the manor belonging to her.

He held the under-mentioned messuage etc. in his demesne as of fee.
Bumpstede ad Turrim. A messuage, 140 a. arable, 6 a. meadow, 2 a. pasture, 8 a. wood and 13s. 4d. rent of assise of free tenants, held of the heirs of the lady Eva de Audeleye by service of doing homage and fealty.
He died on Saturday the feast of St. Juliana last. John Knyvet, his son, aged 23 years, is his heir.

He held the under-mentioned lands etc. in Casterton and Keten in joint feoffment with Eleanor, his wife, and Robert, their son, both of whom are still alive, by grant of John Spicer of Staunford and Alice, his wife, to him and the said Eleanor and Robert, and his heirs, by a fine levied in the king’s court in 41 Edward III.
He held the under-mentioned lands etc. in Wenge in his demesne as of fee.
Casterton. 17 1/2 a. land, held of Edmund, earl of Cambridge, service not known.
Keten. 1/2 a. meadow, held of Hugh Greenham, clerk, service not known.

NORTHAMPTON. Inq. taken at Sothewyk, 11 July, 5 Richard II.
He held the under-mentioned messuages etc. in Abethorp and Newenton, (estate not given).
He held the under-mentioned manor and advowson of Hale jointly with Eleanor, his wife, who is still living, to wit, to him and her and the heirs of their bodies, with remainder to his right heirs, by feoffment of Peter Holt long before the king’s pardon, to wit, in 22 Edward III.
He held the under-mentioned messuage etc. in Sothewyk and Piriho jointly with the said Eleanor in form aforesaid, by gift and feoffment of Richard Hemyngton.
He held the under-mentioned land in Foderyngeye and manor of Wynewyk jointly with the said Eleanor in form aforesaid, by gift and feoffment of (name left blank).
He held the under-mentioned land in Armeston jointly with the said Eleanor, his wife, and Richard, their son, by gift and feoffment of Adam Bacoun, knight.
He held the under-mentioned manor of Deenthorp in his demesne as of fee, except 20 a. land therein which he held in joint feoffment with the said Eleanor, to him and her and the heirs of their bodies, with remainder to his right heirs, by gift and feoffment of William Elys and Joan, his wife, by a fine levied in the court of Edward III.
He held the under-mentioned messuages etc. in Sothewyk, Thirnyng, Aylynton, Scobwell and Le Hoo in his demesne as of fee.
Abethorp and Newenton. 6 messuages and 5 virgates of land, held of the king in chief, as of the manor of Abethorp, which is of the ancient demesne of the crown of England, according to the custom of the manor.
Hale. The manor, with the advowson of the church, held of the king in chief by knight’s service. It is worth nothing by the year because the messuages are wasted and it lies within the king’s forest, and the profits are wasted by the king’s deer.
Sothewyk and Piriho. A messuage, 50 a. land and a meadow called ‘Babholme,’ held of the earl of Stafford, as of the honor of Gloucester, by service of suit to the earl’s court in Tansore twice a year.
Foderyngeye. 1/2 virgate of land, held of the earl of Cambridge, as of the castle of Foderyngeye, services not known.
Wynewyk. The manor (whereof 82 a. land are in the county of Huntingdon and in the same town), held of the earl of Stafford, as of the honor of Gloucester, services not known.
Armeston. A plot and a virgate of land, held of John Byroun, knight, services not known.
Deenthorp. The manor, held of John Tyndale, as of his manor of Deen, by service of 4 marks yearly.
Sothewyk. A messuage and a carucate of land called ‘Knyvettesplace,’ held of the earl of Warwick, service not known.
Thirnyng. A messuage and 4 virgates of land, held of the abbot of Peterborough by service of suit to the abbot’s court twice a year.
Aylynton. A messuage and a carucate of land, held of the same abbot, services not known.
Scobwell and Le Hoo. 2 assarts so called, containing by estimation 30 a., held by rendering to the king 10s. yearly.

NORTHAMPTON. Inq. taken at Clyve, Friday before SS. Simon and Jude, 6 Richard II.
He held more lands than are contained in the above inquisition, as follows:—
He held the under-mentioned assarts in Suthwyk and messuages, lands and rents in Apethorp, Neuton, Nassyngton, Walmesford, Stybyngton and Wermyngton in his demesne as of fee.
He held the under-mentioned messuage and 30 a. land and meadow in Suthwyk jointly with Eleanor, his wife, and Margery, his daughter by the said Eleanor, to wit, to them and the heirs of the bodies of himself and Eleanor, with remainder to his right heirs, by gift and grant of Thomas de Morton, vicar of the church of Suthwyk.
He held the under-mentioned 6 1/2 a. land in Suthwyk jointly with the said Eleanor by grant of Richard de Lincoln to him and her and the heirs male of their bodies, with remainder to his right heirs.

Suthwyk. Two assarts called ‘Langewelsike’ and ‘Longehegg,’ held of the king by service of 10s. yearly.
Apethorp and Neuton. 6 messuages and 50 a. land, held according to the custom of the manor of Apethorp (which is of the ancient demesne of the crown of England), to wit, that a man’s first wife shall have for life all the lands etc. which her husband held in demesne as of fee. Eleanor, the deceased’s first wife, who is still living, will accordingly have the premises for life.
Nassyngton. 3s. rent, held of the rector of the church of that town, services not known.
Walmesford and Stybyngton. 16s. rent, held of William de Folkesworth, services not known.
Wermyngton. A messuage, 12 a. land and 5a. meadow, held of the abbot of Peterborough, services not known.
Suthwyk. A messuage and 30 a. land and meadow; 6 1/2 a. land; 12 1/2 a. land; and 2 a. 1 r. land,—all held of the earl of Warwick, service not known.
Suthwyk, Wode Neuton, Fodryngeye and Cotherstoke. 23 a. land and 4 a. meadow, held of the earl of Cambridge and the earl of Warwick, services not known.

LINCOLN. Inq. (fn. 1) taken at Staunford, Monday the morrow of the Purification, 4 Richard II.
He died seised of the under-mentioned messuage, 6 cottages, 24 1/2 a. land, advowson and 8s. rent in Staunford jointly with Eleanor, his wife, who is still living, and Robert, their son.
He died seised of the remaining under-mentioned messuages etc. in his demesne as of fee.
South Ormesby. A messuage and 4 bovates of land, held of Sir Walter Pedewardyne, knight, by a fifteenth part of a knight’s fee; and Sir Walter holds them of the king in chief.
Staunford. A messuage, 6 cottages 24 1/2 a. land, the advowson of the chantry at the altar of St. Nicholas in the church of St. Clement, Staunford, and 8s. rent, held of the earl of Cambridge by two appearances at his court in Staunford and by rendering 12d. yearly. The said earl holds them of the king, as of the crown.
Staunford beyond the Bridge. A messuage, 5 shops and 12 a. land in the liberty of the abbot of Peterborough, held of the said abbot by service of 3s. yearly and by two appearances at his court in Staunford. The said abbot holds them of the king.
Staunford. A cottage, held of the aforesaid earl, service not known.
Date of death as above. Heir as above, aged 23 years and more. Henry Knyvet, his younger son, is his heir to the lands etc. in Staunford according to the custom of the said town, because the town is held in socage. The said Henry was 8 years of age at Martinmas last.

CAMBRIDGE. Inq. taken at Fendrayton, 20 August, 5 Richard II.
He held the under-mentioned manor of Dokesworth, messuage etc. in Fendrayton and land in Conyngton jointly with Eleanor, his wife, who is still living, by gift and feoffment of William de Huntyngfeld made with the king’s licence to him and her and the heirs of their bodies, with remainder to his right heirs.
He held the under-mentioned tofts etc. in Ellesworth and Grave jointly with the said Eleanor, by gift and feoffment of John atte Grave made to him and her and the heirs of their bodies, by a fine levied in the king’s court, with remainder to his right heirs.
He held the under-mentioned rent in Pappeworth Anneys jointly with the said Eleanor by gift and feoffment of John Norreys and Margery, his wife, and William de Whytewell and Maud, his wife, made by a fine levied in the king’s court to him and the said Eleanor and his heirs.
He held the under-mentioned advowsons of Pappeworth Everard and Pappeworth Anneys jointly with the said Eleanor.
Dokesworth. The manor (extent given), with the advowson of the church, held of the king in chief by service of a third part of a knight’s fee.
Fendrayton. A messuage, a garden, a dovecote in ruins, 150 a. arable, 20 a. meadow, 10 a. marsh and 10s. rent of assise of free tenants, held of the countess of Norfolk by service of rendering 11s. 7d. Pappeworth Anneys. 41s. 5d. rent, held of the king by service of doing one suit yearly to the king’s view of frankpledge there.

He held the under-mentioned land and rents jointly with Eleanor, his wife, who is still living, by grant of Richard Treton, parson of the church of Oundell, and William, vicar of the church of Southwyk, to him and her and the heirs of their bodies, with remainder to his right heirs.
Wynewyk. 82 a. arable, several pasture worth 12d. yearly, 9l. 3s. 4d. rent of assise of free tenants and a rent of 3 capons at Christmas, held of the earl of Stafford by service of suit to his court at Sautre once a year.

He held the under-mentioned toft in Swaveseye and rents in Swaveseye, Fendrayton and Conyton jointly with the said Eleanor in form aforesaid, by gift and feoffment of George de Ellesworth.
He held the under-mentioned croft etc. in Pappeworth Everard and Eltisle jointly with the said Eleanor in form aforesaid, by grant of Michael Bette of Fulburne, clerk.
He held the under-mentioned 1 a. arable etc. in Pappeworth Everard jointly with the said Eleanor in form aforesaid, by grant of Thomas Kendale, clerk.
Conyton. 3s. 10 1/2d. rent, held of the countess of Norfolk by service of doing suit twice a year to her court at Stanton.

Both the above are held of the duke of Brittany by service of doing suit twice a year to his tourn at Swaveseye, and of the countess of Norfolk by service of doing suit twice a year to her court at Stanton.

He died seised of the under-mentioned messuages etc. in Staunford beyond the Bridge and South Ormesby in his demesne as of fee.
He held the under-mentioned 8 messuages etc. in Staunford jointly with Eleanor, his wife, and Robert, their son, both still living, by grant of John Spicer of Staunford and Alice, his wife, to him and the said Eleanor and Robert and his heirs by a fine levied in the king’s court in 41 Edward III.
Staunford. 8 messuages, 24 1/2 a. land, 8s. rent and a rent of a cock and 2 hens, and the advowson of the chantry at the altar of St. Nicholas in the church of St. Clement, Staunford, held of Edmund, earl of Cambridge, by service of 15d. yearly and by two appearances yearly at the earl’s court there.
Staunford beyond the Bridge. 2 messuages, 6 cottages and 26 a. land held of the abbot of Peterborough, as of the abbot’s lordship, by service of 3s. yearly and by two appearances yearly at the abbot’s court. The custom of the abbot’s manor is that after a man’s death his wife shall have one moiety and his youngest son the other moiety of the tenements held of the abbot. So Eleanor late the wife of the said John Knyvet, and Henry, his younger son, will have the two moieties of the tenements beyond the bridge. The said Henry was 7 years of age at Martinmas last.
South Ormesby. A messuage and 4 bovates of land held of Walter Pedwardyne, knight, by service of a fifteenth part of a knight’s fee; and the said Walter holds them of the king in chief.

Writ to the escheator to make a certificate into Chancery touching the dower assigned to the said Maud and Thomas de Kydale, per present husband, of the lands etc. late of the said William, who held by knight’s service of the heir of John de Moubray, a minor in the king’s wardship, in pursuance of a writ to the late escheator dated 24 October, 3 Richard; as no such certificate has yet been made. 8 February, 4 Richard II.
YORK. Certificate dated at Ravensthorp, 8 May, 4 Richard II. Dower was assigned by the late escheator, in pursuance of the above-mentioned writ, on 10 November, 3 Richard II, at Ravensthorp, as follows:—

BEDFORD. Inq. taken at Bedford, Thursday before St. Bartholomew, 5 Richard II.
He held the under-mentioned manor, lands and messuage in his demesne as of fee.
Stratton. The manor (extent given).
Sutton. Lands etc. in the hands of tenants at will rendering 34s. yearly.
Both the above are held of John Hastinges, earl of Pembroke, of the honor of Huntingdon.
Cotton. A messuage in the hands of a tenant at will rendering 2s. 6d. yearly, held of the heirs of John atte Pole by service of rendering 4d. yearly and by suit of court twice a year.
He died on 28 May last. Elizabeth, his daughter, aged 24 years and more, wife of John de Nevill, knight, lord of Raby, is his heir.

He held the under-mentioned third part in his demesne as of fee.
Broghton. A third part of the lordship, worth 2s. yearly in perquisites of court, held of the king in chief by knight’s service.

CUMBERLAND. Inq. taken at Carlell, Saturday the feast of SS. Peter and Paul, 5 Richard II.
He was seised in his demesne as of fee of the under-mentioned town and hamlet.
Gamelsby. The town, with Unthank a hamlet thereof, held of the king in chief by knight’s service and by service of rendering 13s. 4d. yearly for cornage by the hands of the sheriff.
He held no other lands etc. in the counties of Northumberland, Cumberland and Westmoreland.
He died on Monday before Whitsunday last. Heir as above, aged 21 years and more.

Writ to John Devereux, captain, or the king’s clerk, William de Ermyn, treasurer, of Calais. 1 June, 4 Richard II.
CALAIS. Inq. taken before the said John and William, Thursday before the Nativity of St. John the Baptist, 4 Richard II.
The deceased held of the king in chief all the tenements, houses and vacant plots in Calais formerly belonging to John Dayre, which queen Philippa held during her lifetime by gift and grant of Edward III. The premises are held by service of doing and maintaining two watches for the safe-keeping and garrisoning of the town. They render 22 1/2d. yearly to the hospital of St. Nicholas, Calais.
He died about Tuesday before Whitsunday last. Thomas Camoys, knight, is his next heir to the premises by virtue of the following letters patent of Edward III and because the deceased died without heir male of his body. The age of the said Thomas is not known.
Copy of the above-mentioned letters patent, dated at Westminster, 28 June, 49 Edward III, [Calendar of Patent Rolls, 1374–1377, p. 117].

LINCOLN. Inq. taken at Acheford, Friday after the Decollation of St. John the Baptist, 5 Richard II.
He held no lands etc. in the county so far as the jurors can ascertain; but Elizabeth Latymer, his mother, holds the under-mentioned manors etc. in dower for life, and the reversion belongs to his right heirs.
Helpringham. The manor called Thorplatymer, with Beker, a hamlet thereof, held of the earl of Northampton, as of the lordship of Kyme, and of the lord de Bardolf, as of the fees of Vescy, by knight’s service.
Skredington. The manor, held of William Disne by knight’s service.

He died seised in his demesne as of fee of the under-mentioned tenements and shops etc.
Dougate ward. A great tenement at ‘le Erber,’ a shop by the gate thereof, a cellar there held by Geoffrey Waterleder, a tenement there held by John Umfrey, a tenement adjacent and annexed to the last-mentioned tenement, held by John Tedde, a small shop under the tenement of John Umfrey, 5 solars in Cartereslane, and 4 shops in Governelane, all held of the king in free burgage, as is the whole city of London.

He held the under-mentioned manors and lands etc. in his demesne as of fee.
Danby. The manor with the hamlets (extent given, including a peel in ruins, meadow at Cromclyf, and enclosures and agistments at Glasdale and Lelhome), held of the king in chief by homage and fealty and service of a knight’s fee.
Thornton in Pykerynglyth. The manor (extent given), held of the king in chief, as of the honor of Aumale, which is in the king’s hand, by homage and fealty and service of a knight’s fee.

YORK. Inq. (indented) taken ex officio at York, 16 June, 4 Richard II.
He held the under-mentioned manor, town, advowson and knights’ fees in fee tail, to wit, to him and the heirs male of his body, by grant of Philip Darcy, knight, who is still living, made without the king’s licence in the quinzaine of Easter, 3 Richard II, with reversion in default of such heirs to the said Philip and his heirs.
Yharum. The manor (extent given) and town, held of the king in chief by service of a twentieth part of a knight’s fee. The extent includes a fishery in the river Tese.

CALAIS. Agreement made at Caleys on Friday, 13 February, 6 Richard II, between Robert Brook, attorney of Sir Thomas Camoys, and John de Weston and Raulyn de Meburn, attorneys of Elizabeth late the wife of Sir William, lord de Latymer, that the said Elizabeth shall have the following dower by view and discretion of carpenters and masons chosen and sworn by the assent and agreement of the said attorneys.
A messuage, a ‘wollehous’ and a house for shewing wools called ‘le Shewe,’ which lie on the high street towards the north between the house of John de Langar on the west and 2 houses called ‘Shewes’ of the said Sir Thomas on the east, with a long reed-roofed house and an empty plot which measures 55 1/2 feet from south to north and 44 feet between the hedge of a garden on the west and the said reed-roofed house on the east.
Two great newly-made houses called ‘wollehous,’ adjoining the third ‘wollehous’ towards the south and having a ‘tofalle’ towards the north, with a vacant plot of land appurtenant to them, and lying between the stone wall of a garden appurtenant to the principal plot towards the west and the street called Hue Cowestrete towards the east, and with a third part of the rent of a house which John de Mynistre used to hold.
She shall support a third part of the two watches which the said inn (houstiel) is bound to maintain for the safeguarding of the town; and she shall pay a third part of 22 1/2d. yearly rent due to the Maison Dieu of the town.
Agreed in the presence of Sir John Devereux, captain of Caleys, and Sir William Ermyn, treasurer, and John de Neuwerk, mayor, of the town.

CUMBERLAND. Inq. taken at Cokermouth, Monday after St. Luke, 4 Richard II.
He held the under-mentioned manor of Bolton with the advowsons of the churches pertaining thereto by gift of Edward III to him and the heirs male of his body. He died without such heir male. The present king, by letters patent dated 10 December, 1 Richard II, granted that in the event of his dying without heir male of his body the manor should remain to John lord de Nevill of Raby and the heirs of his body, together with the knights’ fees and advowsons of churches belonging thereto, with reversion to the king and his heirs; and by virtue of that grant he and all the other free tenants of the manor attorned in his lifetime to the said John lord de Nevill, to wit, each of them by 1d.
He alienated the under-mentioned vaccary called Clethowe to Amand Monceux.
He held the under-mentioned plot called Prestcroft, (estate not given).
Bolton in Allerdale. The manor (extent given), with the advowsons of the churches pertaining thereto, held of Gilbert Umfravill, earl of Angos, and Maud, his wife, as of the inheritance of the said Maud, by homage and fealty and service of 13s. 4d. for cornage. The extent includes a plot called ‘Lynwra,’ the manor of Bastenthwayt, held freely of the said Robert, as of the manor of Bolton, by Robert de Bampton, knight, John de Haveryngton and Richard de Irton at a yearly rent of 6l. 7s. 4d., 1 lb. pepper and 1 lb. cummin, and the manor of Le Whythale, similarly held by Gilbert de Culwen, knight, at a yearly rent of 12d. or a pair of gilt spurs.
Clethowe. A vaccary so called within the said manor of Bolton, held of the king in chief by service of paying 13s. 4d. yearly at the Exchequer of Carlisle by the hands of the sheriff.
Prestcroft. A plot so called, held of the king in chief by rendering 13s. 4d. yearly at the said Exchequer by the hands of the sheriff.
He died on Wednesday before St. Matthew in the year aforesaid. Joan Moubray, aged 23 years and more, and Ellen wife of Nicholas son of William de Bolton, aged 24 years, are his sisters and heirs.
