NORTHUMBERLAND. | Proof of age made at Newcastle upon Tyne, Tuesday before St. Margaret, 13 Edward III. |
.........., aged 54 years and more, says that the said heir was born on 4 May, 11 Edward II, at Newcastle upon Tyne, and was baptized in the church of St. Andrew in that town, so that he was 21 years of age on 4 May last. This he knows because he had a son named William baptized in the same church ......., who, as he well knows, has reached that age.
John de Trewyk, aged 45 years, agrees and says that he had a daughter named Alice baptized .........., who, as he well knows, has reached that age. John de Bradforth, aged 49 years, agrees and says that in the same month of May, 11 Edward II, the bishop of Durham ...... ...... Plescys, aged 51 years, agrees and says that in the week of the heir's birth he had a .......... last past was 21 years of age. ...... Wytlawe, aged 62 years, agrees and says that one William de Sutton, at one time his neighbour, was .........., and he stayed with the said William all that day (?) ....... John ...... says that the said heir was born at Berneston in Holdernesse and baptized in the church of that town by Robert de Gousill, then parish chaplain, and that Thomas de Mounceaux, Robert Feld (?) and Agnes de Ruston raised him from the sacred font on Friday after [the octave of] Easter, 13 Edward II. This the deponent knows because Agnes, his ......., was midwife at the birth of the heir, and as she returned to her own house she fell down and died.
........, aged 50 years, agrees and says that he has a son named Richard who was born and baptized the same day as the said heir, and is now of full age. Robert de Berneston, aged 40 years, agrees and says that William, his father, died the same day that the heir was born, and when he went to the church to fetch a cross and lantern ........... ........., aged 50 years, agrees and says that in the week after the heir's birth he took to wife a certain Agnes Taillour, of whom he has begotten sons and daughters some of whom were married years ago. ........, ........, agrees and says that he had a wife named Margaret who was buried the same day ........ John de Reigny, knight, aged 60 years, says [that the said Nicholas was born at Corym]alet on 24 August, 12 Edward II, [and was baptized] in the parish church there. [This the deponent knows because he had a] son born and baptized the same day, who is now of that age. John de Membury, knight, aged 56 years, agrees and says that .......... in the priory of Taunton where the said Hugh sent a letter to the prior of that priory ........ for moneys received from him as a loan, and the letter was dated in 12 Edward II. Thomas de Orchard, aged 42 years, agrees and says that [he had his] firstborn son buried the same day, and his death is entered in a certain kalendar under that date. John Aunger, aged 60 years, agrees and says that ......... with the aforesaid Henry de Lortie, godfather of the same Nicholas. Thomas de Rydon, aged 50 years, agrees and says that ...... of the said Hugh, and there he was born and baptized. John de Cory, aged 50 years, agrees and says that [on the same] day he took to wife Joan sister of Nicholas de Holebrok of Southpederton. William Baldewyne, aged 60 years, Roger Maloisel, aged 40 years, John de Lo ...., ........, ........., aged 64 years, agree and say that they were that day at Somerton before the sheriff on a certain jury ............ made [on the men ?] of the abbot by the men of the lord of Cory Ryvel, and ate there with ........ [and were told] that the said Nicholas had been born that day. The escheator caused John de Bello Monte and Eleanor his wife to be warned by Richard de Acton [to be present at the said proof] and shew cause why the said Nicholas [should not have his lands restored to him] as being of full age. |

John de Ormesby, knight, aged 50 years and more, says that the said heir is 21 years of age and more, having been born at the priory of Beston on the third ...... Nativity of St. John the Baptist, 1320, and baptized in the church of the same priory. This he knows because he was present in the church and saw the chaplain baptize the said heir.
John Cursoun, knight, aged 46 years and more, agrees and says that on the fourth day before the birth the said Hawise sent for Christiana his wife, and while she was yet with her the heir was born and baptized. Edmund de Baconesthorp, aged 50 years and more, agrees and says that at Christmas next before the birth he received at Gymyngham the order of knighthood. Thomas de Birston, aged 60 years and more, agrees and says that Alice his wife gave birth to Thomas his son at the feast of St. Peter's Chains next after the birth of the aforesaid heir. .........., aged 44 years and more, agrees and says that on Sunday after the said birth he lifted the son of his brother from the sacred font in the church of Tilneye. .........., aged 40 years and more, agrees and says that at the time of the birth he was steward of the lands of Sir Robert de ...... .........., aged 52 years and more, agrees and says that on Monday after Easter before the birth ....... the tithe (?) of the church of ...... from Adam Pope. John ..........., aged 46 years and more, agrees and says that in the year of the birth he and John de .......... the belfry of the church of St. John, Middelton. |

Roger ........ says that the said heir was 21 years of age ............, having been born at Bumstede Helioun and baptized in the church .......... feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, 13 Edward II. This the deponent knows because ...... Michaelmas after the birth he, with Henry Helioun the heir's father, [at the request ?] of Richard Russel, bailiff of the hundred of Hengford, bound themselves in 15l. for the said Richard, and by the date of the indenture, which has remained in his possession, he knows the age of the heir.
Robert Sewale, aged 46 years, agrees and says that he was constable of the castle of Clare when the said heir was born, and rendered his account, and the said Henry told him about the birth and asked him to be the heir's godfather. Robert son of Geoffrey, aged 44 years, agrees and says that at the time of the birth he had the manor of Great Bumstede of the earl of Oxford, so that he knows the age of the heir by the date of his acquittance for payment. John Wychebaud, aged 50 years, agrees and says that at the time of the birth he was steward of Geoffrey de Cornualie, and on the day of the birth [he was holding the court ?] of Amberden, and divers men came into court and announced the birth of the heir. John de Wyditon, aged 43 years, agrees and says that at the feast of the Purification next before the birth Robert his father died, so that he then first came into his lands. (The rest is too much mutilated to be intelligible.) |
