WORCESTER. Inq. taken at Wych. Friday the morrow of St. Valentine, 27 Edward III.
Wych. A yearly rent of 100l. from the town of Wych, paid by the men of Wych, held in fee tail, by the king’s charter, to the said earl and the heirs of his body.
He held no other lands &c. in the bailiwick.
He died on the night of St. John’s day in Christmas week last. Joan his sister, whom Thomas de Holond, knight, married, aged 24 years and more, is his heir.
In reply to another writ, the jurors say that the earl held no knights’ fees or advowsons of churches or any lands which could be extended in the bailiwick.

BEDFORD. Inq. taken at Bedeford, Thursday after St. Hilary, 26 Edward III.

BUCKINGHAM. Inq. taken at Aillesbury, Saturday after St. Hilary, 26 Edward III.
Aylesbury. A yearly farm of 60l. from the men of the town, held by the king’s charter in fee tail, to him and the heirs of his body, of the king in chief, which rent used to be paid at the king’s exchequer.
He had no other lands &c. in the county.

Derteford. The farm of the royalty (regalitatis) and market similarly held by knight’s service.
Kent county. 30l. yearly of the issues of the county received by the hands of the sheriff under the name and honour of the earl of Kent.

NOTTINGHAM. Inq. taken at Alreton, 13 February, 27 Edward III.
Allerton under Shirewode. The town (extent given) held in fee tail by the king’s charter to him and the heirs of his body, of the king in chief by knight’s service. The extent includes the wapentakes of Rise and Plomtre of the neighbouring townships, and a common wood in the king’s forest. The town remains mostly without inhabitant and the dwelling-houses broken down and empty, and none will hire (vult conducere) them.
He held no other lands &c. in the county.
He died in the night following St. Stephen’s day in Christmas week last. Heir as above, aged 25 years and more at St. Michael last.
DERBY. Inq. taken at Chesterfeld, 12 February, 27 Edward III.
Chesterfeld. The town (extent given) held of the king in chief by knight’s service. The extent includes a wood called ‘Breresleye,’ and 20l. yearly of fixed rent of the burgesses and other tenants.
Ashford. The manor (extent given), with the hamlets of Great Longesdon, Shelandon, Wardelowe and Hulm, held in fee tail to the deceased and his heirs, of the king in chief by knight’s service. The extent includes woods called ‘Chakkelewe’ and ‘Chirchedale,’ a water-mill and a fulling-mill and a lead mine, formerly worth 20l. yearly, but now stopped for want of workers.

LINCOLN. Inq. taken at Lincoln, Saturday after St. Hilary, 26 Edward III.
Gretham. The manor, with Thorley its member (extent given), including ‘le Hallecroft,’ pasture called ‘le Lynghowe’ and a turbary called ‘Grethamfen,’ held of the king in chief by service of a knight’s fee and charged with 22d. yearly for sheriff’s aid.
Brotilby. The manor (extent given), including a croft called Impegarth and 40s. rent of free tenants in the city and suburb of Lincoln and in Stowe St. Mary’s, held of the king in chief by service of a moiety of a knight’s fee.
Beseby. The manor (extent given), in which there is no capital messuage but a vacant place (placea) called the site of the manor (scitus manerii), held of the king in chief by homage and fealty only. The extent includes rents from free tenants in Beseby, Neuton, Gunnerby, Briggesle, Askeby, Hawardeby, Alwaldeby and Northcotes.
All of which were granted by Edward II to Edmund earl of Kent, father of the deceased, and the heirs of his body.
Castre. A yearly farm of 50l. from the town and soke, similarly held in tail.
Grimesby. A yearly farm of 50l. from the township, similarly held in tail.

RUTLAND. Inq. taken at Okeham, Monday before the octave of St. Hilary, 26 Edward III.
Wissenden. The manor (extent given), including 22a. meadow at Osbernholm, held to the deceased and the heirs of his body of the king in chief by service of a fortieth part of a knight’s fee, of the inheritance of Thomas Wake, late lord of Lidel.
He had no other lands &c. in the county.
He died on 27 December. Heir as above, aged 24 years and more.
Of the manor of Rihal, which is of the inheritance of the said John, nothing is here extended, because it was in the tenure of Sir Bartholomew de Burghersse, knight, on the day the said John died, by what title the jury know not.

SOMERSET. Inq. taken at Somerton, Monday after the Conversion of St. Paul, 27 Edward III.
Somerton. The manor (extent given), including a common pasture called Kynggesmore, under water in winter, and 64a. wood from which nothing can be carried in winter owing to the depth of the road (profunditatem itineris) there, a common oven, a market, a fair on the feast of All Saints and a foreign hundred, held in fee tail, to him and the heirs of his body, by the king’s charter, of the king in chief by knight’s service as parcel of the earldom of Kent.
Kyngesbury. The manor (extent given), including a common pasture in Kyngesmoor and Horethorne and a foreign hundred, similarly held as parcel of the same earldom.
Estcammel. The manor (extent given), including gardens called ‘Estortechard’ and ‘Westortchard,’ closes called ‘Chalecroft’ and ‘Wythybere,’ a fulling-mill, 12a. meadow called ‘Practespark,’ 12a. meadow in la Estmede and Mellemede, 56a. meadow in la Estmede, a pasture called ‘Thornylese,’ a pasture called ‘Holeweye,’ a park, a market, 2s. for ‘Petres panes,’ similarly held as parcel of the same earldom.
Cheddre and Congresbury. A yearly farm of 54l. held as above from the bishop of Bath and Wells, for the manor of Cheddre and Congresbury.
Bath. A yearly farm of 20l. from the prior of Bath for the berton of Bath.
Mulbourneport. A yearly rent of 8l. out of the rents of Mulbourneport.
All similarly held as parcel of the same earldom.

Ware. The reversion of the manor after the death of Blanche, late the wife of Thomas Wake of Lydel.

ESSEX. Inq. taken at Chelmersford, Monday after the Purification, 27 Edward III.
Northweld. The manor (extent given) held in fee tail &c. as above, service not known; including a park of 40a. and a leet on Whit Tuesday worth 18d. and no more because the king takes 4s. for a common fine.
Berdestaple. The hundred similarly held, service not known.
Lammerssh. The manor (extent given), including a park of 40a., similarly held of the earl of Hereford by service of a knight’s fee.
Sutbury and Hamme. A yearly farm of 11l. 12d. from the abbot of Stratford for the manors of Sutbury and Hamme, similarly held.
(Unspecified.) A yearly farm of 50l. from the abbot of Waltham Holy Cross, similarly held.
Colne Wake. The reversion of the manor, after the death of Blanche, late the wife of Thomas Wake of Lydel.

Aulton. The manor (extent given), including a meadow at Isynton and a meadow at Kyngesle, similarly held of the king in chief by knight’s service.
Andevere. 100l. rent yearly from the men of the town, of the fee farm thereof, similarly held.
Basyngstok. 80l. rent yearly from the men of the town, of the fee farm thereof, similarly held of the king in chief, and 15s. yearly rent of the farm of the land and tenements of Walter de Merton in Basyngstok, similarly held.

Kerseye. The manor (extent given), including pasture in the park called ‘Lelleseyes Park’ for a bull and 16 cows, a leet at Michaelmas, and the profits of the market (fori) similarly held of the king in chief by service of an eighth part of a knight’s fee, as the jury understand.
Norfolk. Ormesby. 16l. yearly rent held in fee tail as above, issuing from the manor of Ormesby.

Thorpel, Upton and Eston. The manors (extent given) held in fee tail, to the deceased and the heirs of his body, of the king in chief by knight’s service. The extent of Thorpel includes 16a. pasture called ‘Hilhawe,’ 12a. pasture called ‘le Fen’ and a park of 92a. with deer. The extent of Upton includes a wood called ‘Southawe.’ The extent of Eston includes a park containing 30a. of wood, a wood called ‘le Cranes’ and a wood called ‘Heywod’ within the forest of Clyve.
Bliseworth. A yearly rent of 10l. from the manor, which manor is held of the manor of Tuttebury by knight’s service.
He had no other lands &c. in the county.

SURREY. Inq. taken at Taleworth, 22 January, 26 Edward III.
Wockyngge. The manor, with its members, Sutton and Hoke (extents given), held in fee tail, to him and the heirs of his body, by the king’s charter, of the king in chief by service of a moiety of a knight’s fee. The extent of the manor includes a capital messuage dyked (fossato inclus’), pasture in the coney warren always flooded in winter, a pasture called ‘Kyngeswode Heved,’ a park enclosed, a pasture called ‘Coresbrok,’ a fulling-mill demised to Ralph le Fuller, 4s. 6d. rent for carriage of salt, and a free fishery worth 3s. 3d. yearly in summer. The extent of Sutton includes a wood called Estewode.
Puryfrith. The manor (extent given) held in fee tail as above, as of the honour of Clare, of the pourparty of the heir of Hugh le Despenser, a minor in the king’s wardship, by service of a quarter of a knight’s fee and by rendering at the Exchequer by the hands of the sheriff of Surrey 20d. yearly.
Baggeshete. A messuage, 60a. arable, 8a. several pasture, 20a. wood and 10s. rent, held in fee tail as above, of Richard de Wyndesore by service of rendering to him (eidem) every 22 weeks 3s. 4d. to the ward of the castle of Wyndesore.
Taleworth. The manor, with its member Wyke (extents given), held in fee tail as above, of the honour of Gloucester, by service of a quarter of a knight’s fee and by rendering yearly to the prior of Merton 4s. and to Robert son of Neal (Nigelli) 20d.
Turbevill. Tenements so called, viz. a messuage, 120a. arable, 20a. pasture and a water-mill, held in fee tail as above, of the king as of the manor of Shene by service of rendering 18s. yearly and doing suit of court every three weeks.

SUSSEX. Inq. taken at Lewes, 16 January, 26 Edward III.
Cicestre. A yearly farm of 36l. from the citizens of Cicestre, held in fee tail to the deceased and his heirs.
Idenne. A yearly farm of 8l. from the tenants of the manor, similarly held.
Both held of the king in chief.
He held no other lands &c. in the county as they understand.

YORK. Inq. taken at York, 3 February, 27 Edward III.
Cotyngham and Wyveton. The manors with their members (extents given) held of the king in chief as of the crown by service of a barony and finding an esquire mounted, fitly armed, to carry the king’s hauberk (loricam) in the Welsh war at his own costs for forty days if there should be war in Wales.
Cotyngham. The extent of Cotyngham includes a ‘salteng,’ pastures inundated by the river Humber, which has almost devastated the country there; a park with deer, a ferry across the Humber at Hesill; the ferry of Stanfrey; 4l. rent yearly from the burgesses of Beverley for ‘le dynges’; a yearly rent of 22 horse shoes, price 11d.; and in Cotyngham with its members Hulbank, Doncevale, Neuland, Eppelwyth, Northous and Pilford, 106l. 10s. 6d. rent and not more on account of the mortality and the want of tenants and the inundation of the Humber.
Buttercrambe. The manor with its member Scrayngham (extent given), held of the king in chief as of the crown by service of a knight’s fee. The extent mentions Burghgarth, Ravenbek, ‘le Malegarth’ and Swetapultregarth, and the manor is charged with a rent of 22s. yearly to the prior of St. Andrew’s, York.
Kirkeby Moresheved. The manor with its members in Farndale, Gillyngmore, Brauncedale and Fademore (extents given, with field names), held of John de Moubray by service of 1 1/2 knights’ fees. The extent of Kirkeby includes a weekly market on Wednesday and a fair on the feast of the Nativity of the Virgin; and the manor is charged time out of mind by the ancestors of the earl with 26s. 8d. yearly to the prioress of Keldholm and 13s. 4d. yearly to the vicar of the church of Kirkeby for tithe of the mill. Decrease in value of land &c. through the pestilence.
Croppton and Middelton. The manor (extent given, with field names), with certain tenements in Hartoft, held of the king in chief as of the crown by service of a moiety of a knight’s fee. Decrease in value owing to the pestilence. The manor of Cropton is charged time out of mind by the ancestors of the said earl with 21s. 8d. yearly to the duke of Lancaster to the castle of Pykeryng for the fines of the wapentake and with 100s. yearly to the abbot of Byland (de Bella Landa) and his successors; and ten tofts and ten bovates of land in Middelton are charged time out of mind by the ancestors of the earl with 100s. yearly to Henry de Boys and his heirs.
Aton. The manor (extent given, with field names), whereof the capital messuage and 14 bovates of land are held of the king in chief as of the crown by service of a quarter of a knight’s fee, and the residue is held of John Darcy as of the right of his wife by knight’s service and by rendering 3s. yearly to the said John and his wife and the heirs of his wife for fines of the wapentake.
Hemelyngton. The manor (extent given) held of Ralph de Nevill by knight’s service.
Langeton. Blanche, late the wife of Thomas Wake of Lydel, holds for life the manor of Langeton, with the knights’ fees &c. belonging thereto, by the king’s charter and licence, the reversion whereof pertains to the heir of the deceased.
Compton, Colyngham and Berdesey. A certain yearly farm of 90l. issuing from the manors, held in fee tail to the deceased and the heirs of his body. The said manors are held of the king in chief by knight’s service as of the honour of Pontefract. The abbot and convent of Kirkestall and their successors pay the said farm, which the ancestors of the said earl had of the gift of the king’s progenitors.
