Matfen West, with the premises in Nafferton, was formerly a grand serjeanty held of the king in chief, but in the time of King Henry, the king’s great-grandfather, as they understand, it was given at a rent (arentata) to divers free tenants in fee by the king’s justices to be held by them and their heirs of the king in chief by knight’s service and by service of rendering at the exchequer of Newcastle upon Tyne, by the hands of the sheriff of Northumberland, 4d. an acre; and this rent, which formerly came to 25l. a year, the present king by his charter dated 29 July in his twelfth year gave to William de Felton, now deceased, without rendering anything.
Matfen. A toft and 100a. land purchased of the sister of Richard de Boteland, who held the same of the king in chief by knight’s service and by service of rendering 4d. an acre, which rent forms part of the 25l. mentioned above, but only 4s. of it for herbage can be levied, as the rest lies waste for want of tenants on account of the poorness of the land. It was taken into the king’s hand by the escheator by reason of the alienation to William de Felton and is still in the king’s hand in the custody of the escheator.
Considerable parts of the premises are described in the extents as being waste and not contributing their share of the 25l.
