PREFATORY NOTE.

In the present volume, the Calendar to the London and Middlesex Fines is continued to the close of Michaelmas term, 11 and 12 Eliz., A.D. 1569.

Many interesting features present themselves in the documents calendared, and it is hoped that the vast number of names of persons and places will render this work of, at least, as great importance to the genealogist and the topographer as the last volume. The numerous dealings with ecclesiastical property immediately after the dissolution of the Monasteries is a noteworthy feature. The number of foreign names which appear in the index illustrates the extent of immigration from abroad—either for commerce or as an escape from religious persecution—which took place after the middle of the 16th century.

As before, it is the agreeable duty of the compilers to return their warmest thanks to the different officials of the Record Office, who have lent them every possible assistance in their work.
