Reinger

First preb. in cats., 'Regnerus archidiaconus'. Always occ. as archdcn., without territ. title, but presum. of London, by June 1102, to 1114/15 or later.

Wymund

Occ. in cats. between Reinger and Roger de Clinton, 'Wymundus decanus in Lincoln [Cat. II omits in]'. Does not occ. as can., and no dean or dignitary of Lincoln of this name. Two possible alternative identifications:

(1) Wimund, prior of St. Frideswide's, Oxford (Lincoln dioc.), in 1122 (Willelmi Malmesbiriensis de Gestis Pontificum, ed. N. E. S. A. Hamilton (Rolls ser. lii) p. 316), who may occ. as 'W. chapl. of Oxford' [1107 × 21] (Regesta 11 no. 1380).

(2) Simon Bloet, dean of Lincoln, who occ. [1107 × 16, ?1113], 1121 [after Aug.], and [Nov. 1120 × 1123, ?1123] (Regesta 11 nos. 1032, 1301, 1389). Son of Robert Bloet, bp. of Lincoln (1094-1123) (Henrici Huntendunensis Historia Anglorum, ed. T. Arnold (Rolls ser. lxxiv) p. 305).

Roger de Clinton

Occ. in cats. between Wymund and William de Vere, 'Rogerus de Clintonia [Clitonia, Cat. II]'. Does not occ. as can. Possibly to be identified with Roger de Clinton (nephew of Geoffrey de Clinton (fn. 1) the royal administrator), who was archdcn. of Buckingham before 1129; bp. of Chester, el. Oct., cons. 22 Dec. 1129.

William de Vere (fn. 2)

Occ. in cats. between Roger de Clinton and William of Northolt, 'Willelmus de Ver episcopus Herford [Herfordie, Cat. II]'. Apparently not yet can. when occ. [June or July 1160] (J.S. Epp. 1 217). Occ. as can. once only: 26 May 1162 (Gibbs no. 217). Became can. of St. Osyth (Aug., Essex) c. 1163; bp. of Hereford, el. c. 25 May, cons. 10 Aug. 1186. Son of Aubrey de Vere the king's chamberlain, and brother of Aubrey de Vere earl of Oxford (Comp. Peer. x app. j pp. 114-15).

M. William of Northolt (fn. 3)

Occ. in cats. between William de Vere and Ralph Foliot, 'Willelmus de Norhale episcopus Wigorn'. First occ. as can. [1163 × 73] (G.F.L. no. 382). Last occ. 1183/4 (G.F.L. no. 403). Also archdcn. of Gloucester, 1177-86. Bp. of Worcester, el. May, cons. Sept. 1186.

Ralph Foliot (fn. 4)

Occ. in cats. between William of Northolt and Benedict of Sawston, 'Radulphus Foliot archidiaconus Herfordiens [Herfordens', Cat. II]'. Apparently not yet can. when occ. [July 1183 × Nov. 1184] (G.F.L. no. 404). Occ. as can. c. 1192 (D.S.R. II). Also archdcn. of Hereford by June 1182, to Dec. 1197 or later.

M. Benedict of Sawston (fn. 5)

Occ. in cats. between Ralph Foliot and William of Purleigh, 'Benedictus'. Presum. to be identified with Benedict of Sawston, who cannot otherwise be assigned a preb. Not can. until after 21 Apr. 1196 (Gibbs nos. 103, 186; A/25/643, cal. in Rep. p. 27b). (fn. 6) First occ. as can. before 30 Dec. 1196 (Richardson, William of Ely p. 79, for the date of which see H. G. Richardson, E.H.R. lvii (1942) 132). Also precentor, March 1204- Feb. 1215.

M. William of Purleigh (fn. 7)

Occ. in cats. between Benedict of Sawston and Richard de Wendover, 'Willelmus de Purle'. Not yet can. 17 Dec. 1213, when still called clk. (C.Ch.R. v 202). First occ. as can. 1 Feb. 1218 (A/39/1385). Last occ. 2 Apr. 1234 (Gibbs no. 182). D. as can. by 18 Feb. 1238/9 (A/15/1352). Commem. 11 Dec. (Obits. II fo. 110r, III fo. 96v, IV p. 73), 9 Dec. (Obit. IV p. 104; Dugdale p. 42).

M. Richard de Wendover alias Physicus

Occ. in cats. between William of Purleigh and Hugh de Patishulle, 'Ricardus de Wenden''. Presum. transf. from preb. of Ealdland before Dec. 1238, and transf. from this preb. to preb. of Rugmere soon after Dec. 1238.

Hugh de Patishulle

Occ. in cats. between Richard de Wendover and Conrad, 'Hugo de Patishulle [Pateshulle, Cat. II]'. Occ. as can. once only, 1239 (Chron. Maj. 111 542). Bp. of Coventry and Lichfield, el. 1239, cons. July 1240.

Conrad

Occ. in cats. between Hugh de Patishulle and William de Luda, 'Conradus'. Nephew of Otto, cardinal deacon of S. Nicola in Carcere Tulliano (see Lunt, Financial Relations p. 612). D. or res. preb. by 8 Nov. 1242 (C.P.R. 1266-72 p. 718).

Robert Passelewe

Does not occ. in cats. Royal gr. of preb. in St. Paul's in succession to Conrad, 8 Nov. 1242 (C.P.R. 1266-72 p. 718). Also preb. of Caddington Minor and Sneating. D. 6 June 1252 (Chron. Maj. v 299).

M. William de Luda (fn. 8)

Occ. in cats. between Conrad and Hugh of Cressingham, 'Willelmus de Luda'. Does not occ. as can. Dean of St. Martin le Grand, 30 Jan. 1283 (C.P.R. 1281-92 p. 54). Keeper of king's wardrobe, Nov. 1280-Nov. 1290 (Tout, Chapters 11 14-15). Bp. of Ely, el. May, cons. Oct. 1290.

Hugh of Cressingham (fn. 9)

Occ. in cats. between William de Luda and John de Swinfield, 'Hugo de Kersingham'. Occ. this preb. c. 1294 (Liber F valor). (fn. 10) Occ. as can., by proxy, 11 Apr. 1295 (Statutes p. 94). In royal service by 16 Jan. 1288 (C.P.R. 1281-92 p. 291; cf. Tout, Chapters v 238-9, 271-2); treas. of Scotland, 1296; d. 10 Sept. 1297 (Chron. of Walter of Guisborough, ed. H.
