CHANCELLORS
The title 'chancellor' was not in regular use at St. Paul's until after 1200, before which date magister scholarum was the usual term. (fn. 1)

Called scholasticus c. 1102 (Acta SS., Oct., III 754), and was predecessor of M. Hugh in a dwelling-house (see below); therefore prob. mag. schol. Occ. as can. from 1086 to 1111/12. D. before Jan. 1127 (Gibbs no. 273).

Appd. as mag. schol. [1111 × Jan. 1127] (Gibbs no. 273), being granted the dwelling formerly M. Durand's, and the custody of books. Apparently d. or res. before Jan. 1127 (Gibbs no. 274). Possibly to be identified with Hugh, archdcn. of Middlesex, from c. 1128 to 1138, and ?preb. of Hoxton (cf. above p. 15).

Appd. as mag. schol. before 16 Jan. 1127 (Gibbs no. 274). Occ. as mag. schol. [c. 1134 × 1141] (Gibbs no. 275), (fn. 3) and 1150/1 (B.M., Harley MS. 6956 fo. 85r, from missing Liber F fo. 35). Presum. to be identified with M. Henry I, can., unident. preb. (see below, pp. 92-3). Possibly also to be identified with Henry son of Hugh the archdcn. [of Middlesex], preb. of Hoxton (cf. below p. 55). Thought by Stubbs to be identified with M. Henry of London, who renounced claim to archdcnry. of Colchester, c. 1154 (Diceto 1 p. xxxvi; cf. above p. 18), and occ. without title, as father of another Henry, [March 1157 × May 1162] (see below p. 92).

First dated occs. as mag. schol. 1183/4 (G.F.L. no. 403), and c. Sept. 1183 (B.M., Cotton MS. Claud. A. viii fo. 119v, from lost cart. of Bermondsey), but another occ. may be earlier, [c. 1181] (G.F.L. no. 388). Occ. as mag. schol. c. 1192 (D.S.R. I). Last occ. after Oct. 1200 (A/12/289, cal. in Rep. p. 14a), (fn. 11) and [Jan. 1198 × Dec. 1202] (Curia Regis Rolls 11 267). Commem. 20 June (Obits. I fo. 12v, II fo. 108r, III fo. 95v, IV pp. 67, 85). So presum. d. in June of 1201, 1202 or 1203.
