Prayers.

Grantham Election.

MR. Turner reports from the Committee for Privileges and Elections, the Case upon the double Return for the Borough of Grantham in the County of Lyncolne; that, upon Examination of the Fact, it appeared, that John Newton Esquire, who is returned, together with Thomas Skipwith Esquire, by one of the Indentures, had a greater Number of Voices than Wm. Ellis Esquire, who is returned, together with the said Mr. Skipwith, by the other Indenture; and the Opinion of the Committee, that the said Mr. Newton is duly elected, and ought to sit.

Resolved, That this House doth agree with the Committee, that the said Mr. Newton is duly elected, and do sit in this House: and that the Indenture whereby Mr, Ellis is returned, be withdrawn.

Sudbury Election.

He also reports from the said Committee, the Case upon the double Return for the Borough of Sudbury in the County of Suffolk; that, upon Examination of the Fact, it appeared that John Gurdon and Joseph Brond Esquires, being returned by one Indenture, are duly elected, and ought to sit; and that the other Indenture, whereby Rob Cordell Esquire is returned, be withdrawn.

Resolved, That this House doth agree with the Committee, that the said John Gurdon and Joseph Brond are duly elected, and do sit in this House; and that the Indenture whereby the said Mr. Cordell is returned, be withdrawn.

Great Yarmouth Election.

He also reports from the said Committee, the Case upon the double Return for the Borough of Great Yarmouth, in the County of Norfolk; that, upon Examination of the Fact, the Question being, whether a select Number of Burgesses, or the Burgesses at large, ought to elect, the Committee are of Opinion, that the Burgesses at large ought to elect; and that, of them, Sir John Potts Knight and Baronet, and Sir Wm. Doyley Knight, having the greatest Number of Voices, are duly elected, and ought to sit in this House.

Resolved, That this House doth agree with the Committee, that the said Sir John Potts and Sir Wm. Doyley are duly elected, and do sit in this House; and that the Return be accordingly amended, by the Clerk of the Crown.

Hindon Election.

He also reports from the said Committee, the Case upon the double Return for the Borough of Hindon in the County of Wilts; that, upon Examination of the Fact, the Question being, whether the Freemen in general ought to elect, or such only of them as pay Scot and Lot of the said Borough, the Committee were of Opinion, that the Freemen in general ought to elect; and that Sir Thomas Thyn Knight, who is returned in one of the Indentures, together with George Grobham How Esquire, is duly elected and ought to sit; and that the other Indenture, whereby Edmund Ludlow Esquire is returned, together with the said Mr. Grobham How, be withdrawn.

Resolved, That this House doth agree with the Committee, that the said Sir Thomas Thyn is duly elected, and do sit in this House; and that the Indenture whereby the said Mr. Ludlow is returned, be withdrawn, by the Clerk of the Crown.

Publick Records.

Mr. Pryn makes Report from the Committee appointed for securing of the Books of publick Concernment, lately in the Hands of Mr. Phelpes, that the said Committee have in their Hands the Keys, where many of the said Books are lodged; and that Twenty-nine other Books, of the same Books, Part of Thirty Books, which were conveyed out of the House, are also recovered and secured.

Grantham, &c. Returns.

The Clerk of the Crown came up to the Clerk's Table, and withdrew the Indenture wherein Wm. Ellis, Esquire, was returned for Grantham in the County of Lyncoln, and also the Indenture, wherein Mr. Cordell was returned for Sudbury in the County of Suffolk.

Great Yarmouth Return.

He also amended the Return for Great Yarmouth, and inserted the Names of Sir John Potts, and Sir Wm. Doyley, instead of the Names of Sir John Palgrave, and Miles Corbet.

Hindon Return.

The Clerk of the Crown also, at the Clerk's Table, amended the Return for the Borough of Hindon in the County of Wiltes, and inserted the Name of Sir Tho. Thyn into the Indenture, in the Place of Edmond Ludlow Esquire.

Assessment.

The House this Day proceeded in, and finished, the reading of the ingrossed Ordinance for an Assessment of Seventy thousand Pounds by the Month, for Three Months, to be set upon England, to commence from the 24th of June, 1660.

The House being moved, that several Persons against whom Exceptions were offered, might be put out of the Ordinance for Assessment; viz.

Mr. Francis Lassels, Sir John Bouchier, Mr. Tho. Challoner, Mr. Slingsby Bethell, for the County of Yorke; Sir Gilb. Pickering Bart. for the County of Northampton; Mr. Secretary Thurloe, for the Isle of Ely; Mr. Daniel Blagrave, for the County of Berks; Col. Valentine Walton, for the County of Huntington; Mr. John Dove, for the County of Wilts;

Resolved, That the Names of such of the said Persons as are named Commissioners in the Ordinance for Three Months Assessment, be struck out of the said Ordinance.

The Question being put, That any more Names of Commissioners be added in the Ordinance for Three Months Assessment;

It passed in the Negative.

Resolved, That this be the Title of the said Bill; viz.

An Ordinance of the Lords and Commons, for an Assessment of Seventy thousand Pounds, by the Month, upon England, for Three Months, for the Supply of the present Occasions of the King's Majesty; and for and towards the Payment and Satisfaction of the Armies and Navies continued for the Defence of this Kingdom; and for other the necessary and urgent Occasions thereof.

And the said Ordinance, so amended, was, upon the Question, passed.

Ordered, That the Lords Concurrence be desired to this Ordinance.

Mr. Alderman Robinson is to carry it to the Lords.

Seditious Words.

The House being informed, that one Mr. Trevill had said, "that he would kill the King with his own Hand;"

Resolved, That it be referred to the Committee, to whom the Examination of Mr. Secretary Thurloe's Business is referred, to examine the Business touching the said Information against the said Mr. Trevill; and that they proceed to a thorough Examination thereof, for the Discovery of the Truth of the Business: And they have Power to send for Persons, Papers, Witnesses; and what else may conduce thereunto: And Sir John Northcot is added to that Committee: And Mr. Trelawny is desired to attend them, to give what Information he can, touching the same.

Navy and Army Arrears.

The House, according to former Order, was this Day resolved into a Grand Committee, for raising of a considerable Sum of Money, for Satisfaction of the Arrears of the Navy and Army.

Sir Tho. Widdrington took the Chair.

Mr. Speaker resumed the Chair.

Sir Thomas Widdrington reports from the Grand Committee, for raising of a considerable Sum of Money for Satisfaction of the Arrears of the Army and Navy, the Resolve of the said Grand Committee; viz.

That the Sum of Money necessary to be raised is Four hundred thousand Pounds; the same to be applied to the disbanding, and paying off, such of the Forces of the Army and Navy, as are now thought not necessary any longer to be continued.

Sir Thomas Widdrington also reports from the said Grand Committee, that the said Grand Committee desire the Leave of this House to sit To-morrow Morning, at Nine of Clock.

Resolved, That this House be resolved into a Grand Committee To-morrow Morning at Nine of the Clock, to consider of the raising of a considerable Sum of Money for Satisfaction of the Arrears of the Army and Navy.
