Friday, 27th April, 1660.

Prayers.

Plymouth Election.

MR. Turner reports from the Committee for Privileges and Elections, touching the double Return for the Borough of Plymouth, That Mr. Serjeant Maynard and Mr. Edmond Vowell be returned by the Mayor, William Morris and Samuell Trelawny Esquires by the Freemen; and the Opinion of the Committee, That Serjeant Maynard and Edmond Vowell ought to sit, until the Merits of the Cause touching the said double Return be heard.

Resolved, &c. That this House doth agree with the Committee, that Mr. Serjeant Maynard and Mr. Edmond Vowell do sit in the House, until the Merits of the Cause touching the said double Return be heard.

Abingdon Election.

Mr. Turner also reports from the said Committee, touching the double Return for the Borough of Abingdon in the County of Berks, That the Mayor returned Sir John Lenthall, and the Bailiffs Sir George Stonehouse; that but one Burgess is to be elected; and the Opinion of the Committee, that Sir John Lenthall is duly returned, and ought to sit in this House, until the Merits of the Cause touching the said double Return be determined.

Resolved, &c. That this House doth agree with the Committee, that Sir John Lenthall is duly returned, and do sit in this House, until the Merits of the Cause touching the said double Return be determined.

New Windsor Election.

Mr. Turner also reports from the said Committee, upon the double Return for the Borough of New Windsor in the County of Berks, that Alexander Blake and Roger Palmer Esquires are returned by the Mayor and Burgesses, under the Hand of the Mayor and Common Seal, and Richard Winwood Esquire by the Burgesses, without Common Seal or Hand of the Mayor; and the Opinion of the Committee, that Alexander Blake and Roger Palmer ought to sit in this House, until the Merits of the Cause touching the said double Return be determined.

Resolved, &c. That this House doth agree with the Committee, that Alexander Blake and Roger Palmer do sit in this House, until the Merits of the Cause touching the said double Return be determined.

Maldon Election.

Mr. Turner also reports from the said Committee, upon the double Return for the Borough of Maldon in the County of Essex, that Henry Mildmay Esquire is returned by the Bailiffs, Aldermen, and Burgesses, and Edward Harris Esquire by the Burgesses only; and the Opinion of the Committee, that Henry Mildmay Esquire ought to sit in this House, until the Merits of the Cause touching the said double Return be determined.

Resolved, &c. That this House doth agree with the Committee, that Henry Mildmay Esquire do sit in this House, until the Merits of the Cause touching the said double Return be determined.

Person to attend.

Ordered, That Mr. Conyers be called in, and give his Attendance on the Service of this House.

Okehampton Election.

Mr. Turner also reports from the said Committee, touching the double Return for the Borough of Okehampton in the County of Devon, that Edward Wise and Josias Calmady Esquires are returned severally in Two Indentures under the Hand and Seal of the Mayor, and that Robert Reynolds Esquire is returned by the Free Burgesses, without the Hand or Seal of the Mayor; and the Opinion of the Committee, that the said Edward Wise and Josias Calmady Esquires ought to sit in this House, until the Merits of the Cause touching the said double Return be determined.

Resolved, &c. That this House doth agree with the Committee, that the said Edward Wise and Josias Calmady Esquires do sit in this House, until the Merits of the Cause touching the said double Return be determined.

Beere Aleston Election.

Mr. Turner also reports from the said Committee, upon the double Return for the Borough of Beere Aleston in the County of Devon, that George Howard and John Maynard Esquires are returned by the Mayor under the Common Seal, John Maynard and Sir Francis Drake by the Freemen; and the Opinion of the Committee, that George Howard and John Maynard Esquires ought to sit in this House, until the Merits of the Cause touching the double Return be determined.

Resolved, &c. That this House doth agree with the Committee, that George Howard and John Maynard Esquires do sit in this House, until the Merits of the Cause touching the said double Return be determined.

Tavistock Election.

Mr. Turner also reports from the said Committee, upon the double Return for the Borough of Tavistock in the County of Devon, That William Russell and George Howard Esquires are returned by the Portreeve under the Common Seal, and Wm. Russell and Ellis Crymes Esquires by the Burgesses in the Name of themselves and the Portreeve, but without the Hand or Seal of the Portreeve; and the Opinion of the Committee, that George Howard Esquire ought to sit in this House, until the Merits of the Cause touching the said double Return be determined.

Resolved, &c. That this House doth agree with the Committee, that George Howard Esquire do sit in this House, until the Merits of the Cause touching the said double Return be determined.

Devizes Election.

Mr. Turner also reports from the said Committee, touching the double Return for the Borough of the Devizes in the County of Wilts, that Wm. Lewis and Robert Aldworth Esquires are returned by the Mayor under the Common Seal, and Wm. Lewis and John Norden by the Burgesses only; and the Opinion of the Committee, that Robert Aldworth Esquire ought to sit in this House, until the Merits of the Cause touching the said double Return be determined.

Resolved, &c. That this House doth agree with the Committee, that Robert Aldworth Esquire do sit in this House, until the Merits of the Cause touching the said double Return be determined.

Old Sarum Election.

Mr. Turner also reports from the said Committee, touching the double Return for the Borough of Old Sarum in the County of Wilts, that Seimour Bowman and John Norden Esquires are returned by the Bailiffs and Burgesses, and Algernon Cecill Esquire singly by the Burgesses, without the Bailiffs; and the Opinion of the Committee, that Seimour Bowman and John Norden ought to sit in this House, until the Merits of the Cause touching the said double Return be determined.

Resolved, That this House doth agree with the Committee, that Seimour Bowman and John Norden Esquires do sit in this House, until the Merits of the Case touching the said double Return be determined.

Great Bedwin Election.

Mr. Turner also reports touching the double Return for the Borough of Great Bedwin in the County of Wilts, That Sir Walter St. John Baronet and Sir Ralph Verney are returned by the Portreeve under Hand and Private Seal, and Robert Spencer and Thomas Gape Esquires, by another Return, under a Great Seal with G. B. but no Name; and the Opinion of the Committee, that none of the Parties returned do sit in this House, till the whole Merits of the Cause upon the said double Return be determined.

Resolved, That this House doth agree with the Committee, that none of the Parties returned do sit in this House, till the whole Merits of the Cause upon the sai double Return be determined.

Birkhead's Petition.

The humble Petition of Edward Birkhead Esquire was this Day read.

Ordered, That this Petition be referred to a Committee, to examine the Business upon the whole Merits of the Cause, and what Matters may be objected against the Petitioner; and whether he hath acted any thing whereby he hath forfeited the Office of Serjeant at Arms attending the Speaker of the House of Commons in the Petition mentioned; and to report it to this House; viz. Lord Commissioner Widdrinton, Major General Browne, Mr. Pryn, Sir Anthony Ashley Cooper, Mr. Finch, Sir Henry Cholmley, Major General Massey, Sir George Booth, Sir Wm. Waller, Sir Anthony Irby, Mr. Holles, Mr. Serjeant Hales, Sir John Northcott, Mr. Yong, Mr. Boderda, Lord Howard, Col. King, Sir Thomas Rouse; and are to meet To-morrow in the Afternoon, at Two of the Clock, in the inward Court of Wards.

Keys and Mace.

Ordered, That Edward Birkhead Esquire do forthwith deliver the Keys of the House, and the Mace belonging to the House, to Serjeant Northfolk.

Pardon of Prisoners.

Resolved, &c. That the Pardon for divers Prisoners in Newgate be referred to the former Committee to whom the Petition of Edward Birkhead Esquire is referred, to examine the Crimes of the Prisoners, and report their Opinion to this House, which of them are fit for Pardon; and that Mr. Recorder, and the Members that serve for the City of London, be added to that Committee.

Settlement of the Kingdom.

Ordered, That the great Business touching the Settlement of these Nations, be taken into Consideration on Tuesday Morning next.

Adjournment.

Resolved, &c. That this House doth adjourn itself until Tuesday Morning next Eight of Clock; reserving Power to Committees to sit and act in the mean time, notwithstaning the said Adjournment: And that the Committee of Privileges do sit To-morrow Morning at Nine of the Clock, notwithstanding their Adjournment.
